Title: Binmen!!
Post by: Alsatian on August 24, 2012, 07:00:35 PM
After the binmen have collected the bins and emptied them, why do they leave them strewn on the pavements - effectively turning them into slalom courses.

It's all very well for fit and healthy people, we can negotiate them - but what about blind people, people in wheelchairs, parents with buggies?

I saw it mentioned in this weeks DT that they were supposed to leave them where they were collected from - oh no they don't (to be read in panto voice!).

Surely there must be a service level agreement between the contractors and the council on expected standards?

Care to comment Mr Slackly?  ;)

I took our, and the neighbours bin out this morning before work.
Got home this teatime, our bin was on our backyard in it's place.

Yes, the bin men in all council boroughs leave a lot to be desired.
Just glad we live in a friendly neighbourhood enviroment  :)

Try driving through Stonebroom estate in a bus!
They park like pillocks -god forbid that a fire engine or ambulance should get through!!
Not kidding, I had to reverse a 40 ft. long bus on Stonebroom estate a week or so ago - nightmare.
Luckily a retired Trent Barton driver watched, and assisted my reversing.
A bus drivers lot is not always a happy one.
Reversing 40ft of bus around parked cars in the middle of a housing estate - living the dream - NOT!!

Had 2 bins blocking my drive this week when I came home.

We also work alongside our neighbours and make sure the bins are brought back onto the drive, not everyone can do that though for whatever reasons and yes our village has the same problem can be frustrating and annoying at times  >:(

Many households have 2 or more cars. Houses 60s to probably 90s were built probably allowing space for 1 car, prior to that doubt if parking was a consideration and with the modern crammed in estates houses seem to have gone back to being built without driveways in many cases.
Feel sorry for bus drivers and bin lorry drivers who have to drive through some housing estates.

Our street 'was' the main route through the village but these days the buses go round the estate and miss it. TBH it's a flipping pain at times trying to get down as everyone wants to park right outside their gate (can't have them walking a few yards now can we) making it that cars park opposite each other. The gardens are plenty big enough for a drive (mine holds four cars so visitors can park off the road as well).
Maybe the affordability for some isn't an option - I don't know, but it was a bus drivers nightmare
(well maybe not the lady bus drivers)  :))  :))  :))

Talking of tight squeezes i am always amazed the bin lorry or any other HGV's can fit up our road (John St) brampton one, however because pavements are very narrow means walking on the road or shoving the bins back...was a nightmare when Laura was in the pushchair i ended up on the road a time or two....

Again this is an old post but......
I'm afraid the problems are still there, in fact I would say they have gotten worse, especially since the contract to empty the bins changed about 2 years ago round our way.
I wonder if they would empty the bins if we put out the bins as neatly[sic] as they leave them, o.k. I don't have to trudge miles to retrieve my bin but I've certainly had to walk past a couple of neighbours houses to get it back.
What people can't seem to grasp is that
In the good old days binmen teams were 8 men and a driver. 2 walked up the estate {1 either side} fetching your bins out onto the pavement, 2 teams {2 either side} emptied the bins onto the lorry and the last 2 followed taking your bins back down your path.
Your now doing at least 50% of the job for them and having to pay more for the privilege.
Also it was pointed out that disposing of batteries meant we no longer put them in the inner box of the maroon bin, we now have to put them in a bag and tie the bag to the bin handle so they can be kept separate, that's a laugh they just grab the bag and throw it in the main bin before emptying.
{I did make the council aware of this practice a while back and, as usual with a criticism, I was ignored to a man}

Some of this recycling is farcical.
We were given small kitchen bins to put fresh veg waste in - I used mine, have to go with what they want.
It had to be put into the Green bin - ok I complied.  O:-)

Then come winter we had to use the black bin for all waste as they were not emptying green bins  :-?

They are taking the P@@@!

Last week I went to my uncles parked my car on his drive. He is on a collection and delivery for his bins.
I came out of his house to go back home - to find two bins blocking his drive  >:(

Now come on these chaps are not stupid by any means - so what the ---- @@@@  >;

Yes we were given those little "bins" too, I found the perfect job for it, all my computer/phone cables spare mouse etc all fit in nice and tidy.
As for the bins, at the top of our estate is an old terrace street, when the bins are out and cars parked you literally have to walk down in the road.

On Tuesdays we have our bins emptied. Green and maroon one week and the black one on alternate Tuesdays.

Today it's the turn of the two bins, they have already emptied the garden waste green bin and left a load of leaves on the road outside our gate for me to clean up, no doubt the same will be said of the maroon bin when they empty that, as the last time they emptied it we came home from shopping to find a broken bottle and 3 tin cans outside our gate, again down to me. This it seems is a regular occurrence with the binmen nowadays, they obviously don't give a monkeys. At least the old binmen had a shovel on the back of the lorry and any spillage {usually fire ash} was quickly scooped up and put in the lorry.

No one seems to have any pride in their work nowadays. As with the old binmen and many other jobs then there were inspectors going round double checking that the jobs were being done properly.

Unfortunately, these days it's all down to how quickly they can get a job done for the cheapest price, with little or no regard to quality of service.

I have exactly the same oroblem, as I'm sure many residents do. On one occasion I saw a milk carton that had dropped on the floor, and all the operative did, was to kick it into the kerbside!

I now find that, when emptying the maroon bin, they just tip the paperwork out of the smaller bin  into the big bin then empty it.

When looking on the N.E.D.D.C. site this is an "experiment" they are trialliing, so are asking people to put away their small paper boxes and just put paperwork straight into the big bin. If you can do it now you can do it all the time, same withwhen they suspend the green bin collections they say you can put food waste into your black bin! well why can't you do that ALL the time and save on a third bin collection.
