Chesterfield Discussion / Re: Fire on Brushfield road
« on: July 02, 2019, 12:08:28 PM »
As a former firefighter, there would be a number of reasons why different stations may be involved.  Most likely scenario is the location of specialist vehicles or specialist crews.  It is now commonplace to see appliances from neighbouring counties attending incidents within Derbyshire and vice versa. Attendance mobilisation these days is like a game of chess, where it is a matter of maintaining adequate cover, in fact no different to days long gone.  It could be that Clowne and Matlock may well be reported as attending the incident, but not necessarily to the address - they may then be standing by at Chesterfield to maintain cover.

Chesterfield Discussion / Re: The Big Wheel

The Liverpool Wheel has been in situ for possibly 10 years alongside the Echo Arena. Seems a more permanent attraction than the more mobile wheel that visited Chesterfield.

Not sure that boats are still available.  A fire some years ago destroyed all of the boat storage area including the rowing boats, which allegedly couldn't afford to be replaced by CBC due to cuts in the leisure budget!!

Politics / Tory Defence Secretary sacked.
« on: May 02, 2019, 08:51:01 PM »
Theresa May has sacked Gavin Williamson as Defence Secretary despite his "strenuous" denial that he was responsible for the unprecedented leak of information from the National Security Council (NSC).

Theresa May acted following the leak of secret discussions surrounding the Huawei 5G contract.

It is thought the sacking is the first time a Cabinet minister has been sacked following a leak investigation.

The sacking was swiftly followed by calls from Labour and Liberal Democrats for a criminal investigation into whether Mr Williamson had breached the Official Secrets Act, but Downing Street made clear Mrs May now considers the matter "closed".

Guy Burgess, Antony Blunt and George Blake and Cronyism spring to mind!!

Cordwell Valley was an area beyond Millthorpe Lane beyond Barlow. A delightful walk along Millthorpe Brook..

Chesterfield Corpotation Transport used to run buses beyond Barlow to Cordwell Valley in the 1950 & early 60's.

General Discussion / Re: Dental charges
« on: May 02, 2019, 08:13:38 PM »
NHS dental charges
There are 3 NHS charge bands. From April 2019 to March 2020, the costs are as follows:

Band 1: £22.70
Covers an examination, diagnosis and advice. If necessary, it also includes X-rays, a scale and polish, and planning for further treatment.

Band 2: £62.10
Covers all treatment included in Band 1, plus additional treatment, such as fillings, root canal treatment and removing teeth (extractions).

My wife had treatment described in Band 1, the catch however lies in the dentist deeming, in their opinion, additional treatment. The dentist suggested that she had receding gums, her advice regarding cleaning etc put the cost into Band 2.

The dentists wear a face-mask (A la Dick Turpin}, for a reason!!

I have this conversation with our various insurers, asking the question " If you can reduce my renewal premium now, when I ring you to advise that I am not renewing, why not quote the reduced renewal premium in the first place?"
Cue bullshit explanations.  >;

Apart from having the title, the only other significant benefit could be an invitation to sit on various official committees or boards of directors. You'd be considered as an expert in your field or sport or discipline. There could be a remuneration for that appointment.
Otherwise, it's just a “gong” as we English say. A nice badge and colourful ribbon round your neck.

General Discussion / Re: Feeding Wild Birds
« on: May 13, 2018, 11:13:57 PM »
I am still filling my feeders, even though food should now be readily available.  The sunflower hearts in 3 feeders, for the flock of around 15 Goldfinches is emptied in a couple of days!  Loose seed is going very rapidly and meal worms are gone within minutes.  One of my fat ball feeders holds 6 fat balls and the Jackdaws empty it in a day in their feeding frenzies. Starlings, crows, blackbirds, sparrows, a couple of Robins, a pair of Magpies and a shed load of pigeons make short work of the loose seed. None of them stop long when a Sparrowhawk decides to have a rest on one of my fences!
