General Discussion / Re: Queen Elizabeth II
« on: September 18, 2022, 10:33:12 AM »
Whilst following, on the news, the proceedings of people paying their respects to the Queen I am truly amazed at these people.

Queuing for hours to walk past a coffin makes no sense to me, I mean why aren't these people at work?  It's not as though it's going to mean ten minutes out of their lunch break, tens of thousands of people with quite obviously nothing better to do than stand in line for hours for about 20 seconds of reverence, more so when they are dragging young children along with them. Do what Schofield did and queue jump, using his job as an excuse, or better still find something else to do.
I don't understand this massive outpouring of grief for someone that 95% of the people queuing have possibly never met in person. I saw her in person during her Silver jubilee trip to Chesterfield in '77, I'd taken the wife and mother in law to see her at my wife's request.

All it will mean to me is a new profile on coins and stamps and a new picture on the notes.

General Discussion / Re: Charity bags
« on: September 11, 2022, 01:04:33 PM »
Continuing the charity thread......

It is alleged :-
Someone I know said they have had their faith in charities bruised of late. Whilst walking round town a few months ago they happened to look round one of the charity shops there, always wanting to leave shops leaving a small donation in the charity box on the counter. Due to Covid the box was behind a perspex screen, this person asked the assistant to hold the box whilst they put the money in, but the assistant insisted they hand the money to them and they will place it in, this they did and in the few seconds of heading away from the counter they never heard the chink, chink, chink of monies being deposited and turned in time to see the assistant slipping the hand that was {allegedly} holding the money go into their trouser pocket.
Upon finding this out I later attempted the similar thing in a similar shop on an outing to the peaks. At this shop I was within reach of the charity tin and got my money ready to be stopped and told by the assistant that all charitable donations MUST go through the till, which was strange in itself as in that case why have a tin? I gave over the money and the assistant "rang it up" and put the money in the till and we left.
Since then I have given nothing......... I don't even place monies in the tins even if I could reach them, this particular tap has been switched off, even the fact of not putting anything anymore in the Salvation army tin {outside M&S} since I found out the Salvation army is having a new headquarters built at a cost of £32million.

I sincerely hope Charles is going to be a bit more hands on than his mum.
I appreciate that she was no Spring chicken, he neither, but considering the "Queens" speech given every year on what she expected of her government was WRITTEN by her government, no surprises when things went down the pan.

He is a lot more "greener" than the late queen so I {hopefully} expect he will be pushing for more solar, wind and wave power to help save the planet.
We are an island nation, we are surrounded by water and we still have reserves of North sea gas plus the sun and wind are constantly there and above all free {as yet}.

Sad yes........unexpected no. I saw a swift decline when Philip went, she just seemed to give up.
When she was crowned In 1953 I was 20 months old and she's been there my whole life.

When I saw the official photo of her and Liz Truss Tuesday, I thought then how really frail she looked and we would be hearing what we've heard today before Christmas.
They have already referred to Charles as "King", that's going to take a lot of getting used to, as the phrase "King Charles" is usually followed by the word spaniel.

I don't foresee a massive sea change in how the Monarchy is run, Charles {like his mother} is old school, Fawning bowing and scraping will remain and the poor will still be with us {eating cake!}.

I think I might like the programme if only that awful gobby presenter wasn't doing it! Does she think she is clever and funny? I certainly don't think so. Trouble is, SatNag likes to watch it...and with the sound on!!!

If your talking about Victoria Coren Mitchell's show I started watching just the last five minutes of each programme when it first started waiting for University challenge to start {which is a PROPER quiz show that I never miss} till one night in her attempt at being funny when signing off she said the following U/C had been cancelled for that night and some quip about a replacement programme {and I believed her}  so I turned over, half an hour later I channel hopped just in time to see the last 30 seconds of U/C fading into the distance.

She sometimes introduces H.I.G.N.F.Y. another good show but I don't watch it when she's on it.
Other ones I don't watch presenting H.I.G.N.F.Y. {mainly because they are cr*p} are:-
Stephen Mangen..Richard Osman...Katherine Ryan...and the worst one of all Richard Ayoade.

Techie Or Suggestions / Re: Freeview
« on: September 04, 2022, 07:59:58 PM »
It goes without saying anyone on Freeview is getting a bad deal.
I even complained about Freeview on the Trustpilot site {along with many others} but to date no response.
I've taken the liberty of E mailing the production team of "Rip Off Britain" on the B.B.C. asking them if they would look into why Freeview is so bad in their next series and why they don't seem to care.

My last post on Trustpilot is a request for anyone who has posted on there about Freeview to do what I did and contact Rip off Britain, as it appears that no one from Freeview is taking a blind bit of notice of that site.
Anybody and everybody who has bad Freeview should do what I did and make them take notice, if not E mails then letters..texts even, the more complaints received the more chance of action.

General Discussion / Re: Amazon (the Internet store, not the forest)

Just as a matter of interest.........the new Amazon commercial on t.v. the one showing women scooter riders delivering parcels in India to the strains of It's a mans world.
Now how do you view it.......

Is Amazon a forward thinking company that firmly believes that women have an equal opportunity in a male dominated environment.

Or is it just cashing in on the fact that women will work for next to nothing, wages aren't high in India so possibly even lower for women.

I know which one I plump for.

Chesterfield Discussion / Re: Chesterfield.. booming town or doss hole!
« on: September 03, 2022, 12:28:17 PM »
Went to town yesterday, yes I know it sounds like I go a lot to a place I don't like but it's only because my bank is there, believe me if they opened a branch in C/Cross {or anywhere else near me for that matter} I wouldn't go to town at all.

Noticed they've opened a new Subway on low pavement whilst the other one near Dents still seems to be trading.
The market was "bustling" with all of 6 stalls in use, so much so the traders spread their wares over several tables mainly because they can.

We went by bus to Derby the other day for a few hours {Wed} hour there hour back. Got off the bus there and immediately bumped into a relation of mine, what's the chances eh! Had a nice cuppa in the Eagle market, it seemed like "half day" as a few stalls were closed but it was still busier than Chesterfield markets "busier" days, but I noticed on the way out there was a petition for people to sign as it seems someone is wanting to close it so that could account for some of the closed shops in there. had a good walk round the Cathedral quarter and looked round the Cathedral itself. Still plenty of shops and very busy, then there's the Eagle centre or it might be called Westfield now but that's like a Meadowhall but cleaner.

Watch this Fridays "Have I got news for you"
Apparently the whole show will be dedicated to taking the p*ss out of Boris Johnson.

It's a great shame it was only on half an hour, it could have quite easily run an hour {or made a series out of it} but funny.

It would appear that whoever becomes P.M. they are going to have to travel to Scotland to be sworn in as the queen is up there and she cannot travel................what a Bl**dy shame...Has she not heard of Zoom, or the telephone even?

Yet another way of justifying their existence.

The two candidates have already made promises to the public everyone knows they are going to renege on as soon as they are in power. One "promise" made by cheesy Truss is she says she will overturn and cancel smart motorway upgrades...apart from the fact it will be the first sensible thing this government will have done it will save £billions of taxpayers money and moreover make the motorways just that bit safer, but I'm not holding my breath I'll believe it when I see it, if she does intend to go ahead {should she get in} the FIRST obstacle is Grant Shapps, he is to transport what Atilla the Hun was to ballroom dancing.

Whoever gets in needs to clear out the dead wood, and there's a lot of it.

Rants / Re: Idiots on the road

There is that nothing infuriates me more than the high intensity rear lights.

These so called drivers cannot discern between fog and mist. I've said it before, we haven't had a good pea souper to enable us to utilise these lights in well over 30 years. If say it's an early Autumn morning with a morning mist they think "Oh it's foggy" and switch on the H. I. R. lights and away they go, this is why I dreaded driving in the winter months. Apart from the fact they are totally unnecessary they don't bother turning them off till Spring, I've lost count of the number of times I've followed vehicles with those lights burning my corneas, and it's no good flashing or gesticulating because they'll either totally ignore you or, if it's a pig ignorant know all, they'll get out and threaten you, they actually don't understand what the problem is when the problem is bad driving.

There should be a way where the H.I.R. lights can be automatically cancelled out in good weather, after all there's plenty of computerised equipment on board nowadays, like telling you there's low pressure in a particular tyre or the outside temperature so it wouldn't be a massive task, or they can even be cancelled out when the ignition is switched off.

Or better still if the car drivers just concentrated on what they are doing.....that would help.

I would cheerfully go back to Sky but it appears that's now just as bad.

We manage to watch Netflix thanks to my daughter piggy backing us off her Sky contract so not too bad.

Rants / inconsiderate drivers and their parking habits
« on: August 29, 2022, 12:43:29 PM »
I have used my car three times since last Tuesday, once to Asda Sutton in Ashfield {as the item we needed was not available in town} the second was Chesterfield, parking, as usual, in the Rose hill car park behind the town hall, the third Lidl Brampton.
I have possibly mentioned before when using car parks I park in a part that has the least vehicles parked thereby ensuring no tight squeezes and it means a longer walk.
At Asda I parked in the, half full, front car park with at least 5 empty spaces either side, when we came out one of the other bays had a 4x4 parked in it and it was flush up to my car and it was a squeeze to get in.
In Chesterfield I parked in the top right hand corner of the car park {under the trees} 2 spaces down from a car parked in the top bay and only 2 other cars in those bays at the bottom near the barriers the rest empty, and yes you've guessed it when we got back the top car had gone and there was a white 2 DOOR car parked next to mine and even I could see they must have struggled to get out of the car as it was so close I had to walk sideways to get to my door and could only open my door perhaps 18 inches and squeeze in. Yesterday we went to Lidl Brampton, nice wide bays but still parked with spaces either side and no one next to me when we got back.
Yesterday afternoon I noticed something had been dragged down the full length of the drivers side of my car. Fearing the worst I began to clean that side of the car to assess the damage and after about 20 minutes of vigorous rubbing  the "scratch" had disappeared so thankfully it can't have been caused by something metallic.
What on earth possesses people to park so inconsiderately, I mean it's not rocket science, a child of three could park better.
There's can only be two possible explanations, either they are as thick as pudding or they just don't care.
I think it would help making the bays wider like Lidl, but then Chesterfield car parks wouldn't get quite so many cars in an therefore lose revenue, and that would never do.
