Title: Who'd a thought it!
Post by: Sorastro on September 18, 2018, 02:36:59 PM
Yet ANOTHER story {this time in the paper}
Surely I cannot be the only one who starts to read about a mountain climber or a potholer that has come a cropper and thinks.......
SERVES YOU RIGHT I'VE NO SYMPATHY.
This time.......
A sixty six year old, married only 2 months sets off on a " pleasant walk" in the Lake district with a mate ran into difficulties, because they went totally unprepared, and falls 300 feet to his death. Just what do they expect, as far as I am concerned if you play with fire you'll get burnt.
During my letter writing days to the D.T. I penned a letter expressing my opinion about such people and the number of times the Peak mountain rescue were called out on rescues, literally every week in the D.T. someone had to be rescued {and still do} these volunteers on the rescue risk life and limb to rescue people who mostly shouldn't have gone in the first place, especially those who KNOW what they are doing is dangerous and still they do it, and in their arrogance EXPECT to be rescued.
The reply I got from the letter was a couple of letters in the D.T. basically saying I didn't understand how exhilarating it was to be, say, up in the Alps climbing a sheer face of ice and swinging about on a piece of glorified washing line, these people have obviously got a screw loose.
If I sat in a corner with a pistol playing Russian roulette I'd be locked up for my own safety, and quite rightly so. As far as I'm concerned these "middle class eccentrics" especially such as Ranulph Fiennes want stopping at it, they need to get a proper job.

"I'm going to sail round the world single handed!" ....! "I'm going to climb K2!"..... WHY!!! whatever for, besides it's been done, I really don't see the need to do it at all, fair enough 150 years ago the world was still discovering things and we hadn't the technology, now I don't need to climb Everest, I just look on the telly.
I'm not saying DON'T explore but what "feat" is worth dying for?

Sometimes people can achieve these in their heads - but not physically.
It's a shame they are not sat down and given a good talking too about realistically achieving what they want to do.

"Yachtswoman drifting for 50 hours on her stricken boat rescued by cargo ship"
"Climber dies in fall on Ben Nevis"

What is wrong with these people???

Like to live dangerously I suppose but put others at risk when they get into difficulties!

Saw this on Good Morning Britain.."Man climbed the Shard in London" apparently he {20 years old} has been locked up for 6 months. His obviously brain dead parents were on the programme singing their sons praises saying "He's a free spirit he does what he loves", talk about getting your 15 minutes of fame. If I had told my parents that that was what I was going to do they would have both sat on my chest till the paddy waggon arrived, there is just no excuse for crass stupidity, all three of them want a good slapping.

There are many things that can kill you, everyday things, without seeking them out. Possibly his over indulging parents, plus his sense of immortality plus plenty of spare time {not to mention cash} contributed to this stunt but had it gone wrong his parents would have been on the show weeping and wailing wanting everybody to sympathise...... not me matey boy!!

Read this in this mornings Metro.

"Hiker dials 999 {highlands mountain rescue} saying he's injured"
Volunteers then set out at the height of storm Brendan to reach him carrying a stretcher they walked 8 MILES in atrocious conditions When they reached the spot were he was supposed to be he wasn't there, so they proceeded to a cottage near there.
When they finally found him he was tucked up in his sleeping bag in the cottage, along with 2 other people {not in the same bag obviously} it turns out he had rung in because his legs hurt because he had walked a "long way", so the rescue team walked the 8 miles back to base.

If I had been head of that rescue team I would have took his mind off his legs by giving his backside a good kicking.
