Title: Are you ancient? Do you remember some of these?
Post by: Old Cruser on June 15, 2015, 08:20:08 PM
  This brings back so many memories for me - I guess I must be ancient!

      Someone asked the other day, 'What was your favorite 'fast food' when you were growing up?'
        'We didn't have fast food when I was growing up,' I  informed him.
        'All the food was slow.'
        'C'mon, seriously.. Where did you eat?'
        'It was a place called 'home,'' I explained.  !
        'Mum cooked every day and when Dad got home from work, we sat down together at the dining room table, And if I didn't like what she put on my plate, I was allowed to sit there until I did like it.'

        By this time, the lad was laughing so hard I was afraid he was going to suffer serious internal damage, so I didn't tell him the part about how I had to have permission to leave the table.

        But here are some other things I would have told him about my childhood if I'd figured his system could have handled it:

        Some parents NEVER owned their own house, wore jeans,  set foot on a golf course, travelled out of the country or had a credit card.

        My parents never drove me to school... I had a bicycle that weighed probably 50 pounds, and only had one speed  (slow).

        We didn't have a television in our house until I was 10.
        It was, of course, black and white,  and the station went off the air at 10 PM, after playing the national anthem and epilogue; it  came back on the air at about 6 am. And there was usually a locally produced news and farm show on, featuring local people...

        Pizzas were not delivered to our home... But milk was.

        All newspapers were delivered by boys and all boys delivered newspapers --My brother delivered a newspaper, seven days a week.  He had to get up at 6 every morning.

        Film stars kissed with their mouths shut. At least, they did in the films. There were no movie ratings because all movies were responsibly produced for everyone to enjoy viewing, without profanity or violence or almost anything offensive.

        If you grew up in a generation before there was fast food, you may want to share some of these memories with your children or grandchildren.  Just don't blame me if they bust a gut laughing.

        Growing up isn't what it used to be, is it?

        MEMORIES from a friend:
        My Dad is cleaning out my grandmother's house (she died recently) and he brought me an old lemonade bottle.
        In the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my daughter had no idea.
        She thought they had tried to make it a salt shaker or something. I knew it as the bottle that sat on the end of the ironing board to 'sprinkle' clothes with because we didn't have steam irons.  Man, I am old.

        How many do you remember?
        Headlight dip-switches on the floor of the car.
        Ignition switches on the dashboard.
        Trouser leg clips for bicycles without chain guards.
        Soldering irons you heated on a gas burner.
        Using hand signals for cars without turn indicators.

        Older Than Dirt Quiz:
        Count all the ones that you remember, not the ones you were told about. Ratings at the bottom.

        1.  Sweet cigarettes
        2..  Coffee shops with juke boxes
        3..  Home milk delivery in glass bottles
        4..  Party lines on the telephone
        5.  Newsreels before the movie
        6.  TV test patterns that came on at night after the  last show and were there until TV shows started again in the morning.
        (There were only 2  channels  [if you were fortunate])
        7..  Peashooters
        8.  33 rpm records
        9.  45 RPM records
        10.  Hi-fi's
        11.  Metal ice trays with levers
        12.  Blue flashbulb
        13.  Cork popguns
        14.  Wash tub wringers

        If you remembered 0-3 = You're still young
        If you remembered 3-6 = You are getting older
        If you remembered 7-10 = Don't tell your age
        If you remembered 11-14 = You're positively ancient!

        I must be 'positively ancient' but those memories are some of the best parts of my life.

  (P.S. I used a large type face so you could read it easily)  ;)

Metal  ice  trays  before  plastic  but  not  much  use  without  a  fridge.  Can,t  remember  anyone  around  us  that  had  got  one,  had  to make  do  with  cellars.
Bringing  topic  down  a  bit  but  what  was  worse  than  the  shiny  toilet  paper  we  had, (squares  of  newspaper  was  much  better). These  as  some  will  say,  were  the  good  old  days,  never  get  that  one  with  what  we  have  today.

As a colleague of mine and Slacker's used to say you need 3 lots. One for rough work, one for smooth and one for polishing!

We didn't have a fridge either Pastitman everything went into the pantry as we didn't have a cellar.

I was also my job to scrub the kitchen floor on Saturday's before I could go the the Saturday cinema.
We used to have a large plastic rug in the kitchen which I had to take out, brush and then chuck hot soapy water over it before mopping it.

Oh yes I remember the shiny toilet paper and the squares of newspaper ( it was my job to cut up the squares ).
It was threaded onto a piece and hung on a hook on the toilet door.

We had the Dolly Tub and Wringer handy if I remember correctly it was a big green coloured wringer.

When mum had her first  washing machine it had an electric wringer on top - a right finger nipper for me as well.

As for the old records, I can remember melting some down and making fruit dishes out of them - it used to stink the kitchen out.

Speaking of the kitchen did anyone else have the huge grey stove with oven and a large chimney which went from the stove and up through the ceiling.

We had a new council house by the time I was born and it had a bathroom so didn't need the tin baths.
However, we still had the potty under our beds to use during the night for some reason?
Old habits die hard maybe on my parents side?

Frost on the insides of windows and Army coats on top of our bed quilt to keep us warm.

i  think  shiney toilet was made at the Izal factory in Chapeltown  Sheffield, we had the tin bath as well, my mother used warm up the oven shelfs on the coal range and wrap them up in blankets and put in the bed on cold nights.

We had hot water bottles in bed handy.
I remember by dad lighting a small fire on some winters as for some reason the pipe from the upstairs wash basin used to get frozen inside so water wouldn't go down.

The men of the house always used to stand in front of the fire guard to warm themselves.

I know it's an old post but I couldn't let it go by.....

Television.. we got our 1st telly in 1957, fourteen inch bakelite bush from Roy Smiths in Brampton, 3 channels, Granada,BBC and Midlands.
We had just moved into a "modern" semi the year I was born, 2 toilets one inside one out.
No "fitted" carpets, the room carpet was a basic square one so at least 2 feet of floor was visible all round the room and as we had hard floors these had to be kept polished, as did the doorsteps {Cardinal white for doorsteps and Cardinal red for the floors}
Wallpaper never went up to the ceiling, it stopped at picture rail height with a small border on it then the rest of the wall above was painted to match the ceiling.
Also......
Fridges were the pantry,
Music in the house was whistling{or my brothers Dansette},
Showers were standing in the rain,
Hair shampoo was a block of green fairy soap,
Manicures was biting your nails,
Going out for a meal was standing on the back garden with a sugar sandwich,
We also had......
Two postal deliveries a day, one on Sunday,
Seven different firms delivering milk,
Four different firms selling ice cream,
Davenports beer at home deliveries {I know!}
Craig's pantry,
We had 29 shops in the village {now we have about 8}
And most importantly we had a local bobby who LIVED on the estate.

I dedicate this next bit to the one person who busted a gut for us when we were growing up and virtually never got a word of thanks

For my mum Monday was wash day, ALL DAY single tub hoover with manual mangle and boiler in the wash house with dolly tub.
Tuesday was ironing day, ALL DAY choice of 2 flat irons one ironing one warming on the stove {the 3rd heavy one propped the door open}
plus she had to be cook, cleaner, shopper, nurse, in short general dogs body, she was on call 24/7
That woman never stopped, taking care of the house was a full time job for her with hardly a word of complaint. My father, again like most blokes then, were the bread winners so did very little around the house {that was wimmins work}

I used to help my mum with the washing, initially the dolly tub and mangle. The old one we turned ourselves was hard and the modern one which replaced it nipped my fingers if I didn't pay attention  :'(

Old army coats on top of the bed covers and potty under the bed, waking up in the mornings with ice on the inside of my bedroom window, Lino on the floor and a rug at the side of my bed.

Open coal fire in the lounge and when old enough I had the job of making the fire and standing with newspaper in front of it to 'draw' it up.
The men coming home from the Pit and leaning on the fire guard  to warm their  butts whilst having a fag, not forgetting the snuff on the back of their hands.

Online.... Trespassing
Laptop....Your thighs

On a slightly more serious note you look round at all the ills in the world and think it's terrible {rightly so} but all that aside, when I look back on my 60 + years I think how lucky I was to live when I did!......sorry not gone yet, I and my generation have seen what most of the next generation and possibly more generations will probably never see, the people, the events, the birth of new technology.

Just a sample....

JFK.. to me the best president they ever had. {when people say where were you when JFK was shot, I have the answer}
Uri Gagarin.. The man that for us kids made science fiction science fact.
Man walking on the moon
The swinging sixties
Having real money in your pockets {£.s.d.}
Owning a car that didn't have seat belts
Organ transplants
Berlin wall coming down {and remembering it going up}
Watching Hale Bopp's tail in the sky in the nineties {the next time it will be seen is estimated to be the year 4380} mind boggling
Halleys comet in 1986 {next visit 2061} my youngest granddaughter will see it when she's 50
The passing of a millennium.

Have I missed anything?
