Chesterfield Discussion / Re: Blue bin (non) collections
« on: January 15, 2021, 11:22:36 AM »
Today was our scheduled day for our blue bin to be emptied, only it hasn't. I'm aware that the weather must play a large part in why it hasn't been emptied, but the green bin collection lorry has managed to get round!

This may sound churlish of me to moan, but this is the 4th consecutive time that it hasn't been emptied on the scheduled day. A couple of times they blamed it on the lorry braking down (it's contracted out to Wards Recycling).

Looking on the councils missed bin collection web page they have missed what seems to be the whole of Brampton, Ashgate, Brockwell, Loundsley Green and Walton.

I would've thought that they could at least have done the main roads?

Yours,

Grumpy Old Man!
Our blue bin wasnt collected up at Brookside but green was, saw something on a Facebook page where someone had asked about it and they were pointed in the direction of a council post mentioning there had been some issues. One person mentioned that the collection people were struggling due to a lack of people as so many were having to isolate due to Covid which sounds plausible. I just left ours out and it was collected yesterday.

We have our shopping delivered from Morrisons, and the state of some of the packing beggars belief!

Six pints of milk on top of a cake. Large bag of potatoes on top of eggs!

Give me strength.
We've had the odd similar instance with our Sainsburys delivery but we always mention it to the the driver and they refund it and let us keep it unless its really bad.

We've had the odd strange sub as well, we ordered some Sainsburys nappy pants for our little one which they didnt have but instead of sending a different make in the same size they sent Sainsburys one 2 sizes smaller. Then more recently we ordered some champagne for a birthday do and it was 25% off plus more of a discount for buying 6. They only sent 5 saying they couldnt do six bottles so that ended up costing more than the 6 bottles should have been...one phone call to customer services sorted that with a refund of sorts etc.

We did a click and collect from Tesco Clay Cross for my brother in law first lockdown as they were isolating due to a vulnerable person in the household, worked fine and was very easy. We've been using delivery from Sainsburys and they've never let us down really even when we were doing weekly shops totalling £300/£400 as we shopped for 3 or 4 households. We'd been long time delivery pass holders so we got priority over booking delivery slots during the first lockdown.

Chesterfield Discussion / Re: Best places around town to view fireworks
« on: November 10, 2020, 01:34:26 PM »
Welcome to the forum Emm, unfortunately I am now out of touch with firework displays, years ago we used to go to the one near the fire station on Whit moor but TBH I haven't seen any public ones advertised - maybe the Covid stopped them this year.
Pretty much all public displays didnt happen due to Covid etc....thats probably why folk seem to have been making up for it with about 2 weeks of fireworks in their gardens with fireworks that seem to get louder and louder each year. No idea why folk seem so keen to blow up money in the air but hey ho. Never really been that fussed about them and now we have to try and keep our dog calm to get through it. I can deal with the actual 5th and the weekend near it but when its 2 weeks of constant fireworks going off it gets tiresome.

I've got Royal Mail experience from two sides, for years i worked in various support roles for them and then a couple of years ago i did 6 weeks temp work as a postie. Some cracking lads doing their best but this time of year its starting to ramp up to silly volume levels and they are being asked to deliver all sorts. Majority want to start earlier but for some reason they werent asked to start until later in the morning which obviously pushes things back, one week i spent doing delivering around Tupton and the volumes for two of us were massive and instead of being done for 2:30/3pm it was often nearly 5/5:30pm when we actually got finished. Like many places they are being asked to do more as other things are cut around them. Believe they are actually going through something at the moment where contracted hours are being reduced. All this said i very nearly ended up doing it permanently, whether i would have enjoyed it as much long term i dont know. A lot of the time the earliest they even get to leave the delivery office after sorting and bagging things up is 9:30am.

Main problem is they are being squeezed by other delivery firms who dont have to comply to many of the regulations they do such as having to delivery letters anywhere in the country etc. Heard many a story of other delivery companies charging end users their fees for depths of Scotland etc only to stick it in the Royal Mail system for them to deal with for not as much postage. They are having to come up with other methods of posting like this new pick up thing to try and be competitive.

Well to be honest BBC Radio Derby doesnt even reach most of Chesterfield and we are covered by Radio Sheffield from Yorkshire so its not just the DT ignoring parts of Derbyshire.

The issue with the Cinema's is that the film industry has stopped putting films out for them to show....typical example that has hurt most of them is the new Bond film being delayed again to next March or April having already been delayed from earlier this year to November.

Cost of cinemas, as many things, has got a bit over the top although you arent forced to buy things and its a myth that you cant take your own stuff in but if they have nothing to show they will struggle. Most seemed to be ok until they ran out of things to show. The town has comfortably supported the Cineworld set up for years until the current situation and always appears to be busy when you go past on evenings later in the week or the cheap night. There has been no indication its struggling and would need to close had it not been for a worldwide pandemic that basically meant they've got nothing to show and what you can go and watch you have to sit in a mask which will put plenty off.

We went to France in August and had a cracking time, the quarantine period was announced whilst we were there but with where we were in France it was probably safer than back home and i'm probably closer to the main issues in Northern France sat at home in Chesterfield compared to where we were in France. It was a house we've booked for a few years now and then flights with Easyjet. When the flights werent going to get cancelled we opted to go and it was fine. We can both work from home so the two weeks housebound was fine although it was galling to be driving through Chesterfield on the way home to be housebound as apparently we were a risk and yet we saw large groups falling in and out of pubs in town and on Brampton....yet we were the risk!

We 're due for a long weekend in Robin Hoods Bay with some friends all without kids in a few weeks which hopefully will still be ok.

Chesterfield Discussion / Re: Watch out !! for sneaky speed camera bikes !!
« on: September 21, 2020, 11:41:13 AM »
Our village is just setting up to have a community speed watch group as we have problems with motorists racing around our village.
They are volunteers and have police training.
Our Parish Council has agreed to pay for their equipment for them to be able to do this
Saw some of these on Somersall Lane near the entrance to the park last week. There are loads of problems on Somersall Lane with folk speeding and not even the recent fatal crash has made folk think about what they are doing.

Seems the community speed watch group is locals trying to get something sorted although i'm not sure what happens if someone does speed past them, do they pass info to the police who can then prosecute or is it purely data gathering and then nothing will probably come of it.

Didn't the D.T. at one time print photo's of cars parked inconsiderately on a weekly basis or did I just dream it, if I didn't why aren't they still doing it?
They did....with the photos swiped from the Facebook site i mentioned above.

If you are on twitter look up https://twitter.com/YPLAC and on facebook there is a chesterfield group for bad parking https://www.facebook.com/parkingchesterfield

Apologies for the naughty names these pages have been called.

We used to live on Heaton Street and it was a nightmare especially as we were closer to the Chatsworth Rd end so had to deal with folk parking for the shops etc. They would dump it anywhere at times.

Techie Or Suggestions / Re: planes in the sky
« on: May 11, 2020, 03:23:16 PM »
I've been using FlightRadar for years and have the app on my iPhone...great for looking planes up, with the app you can even put it into Augmented Reality mode where you hold it up to the sky and it puts a label against the plane in the sky making it even easier to identify. Its quite weird realising where a plane is going to and from more or less over Chesterfield....not as many currently obviously but spotted one going from Tel Aviv to Montreal earlier this week in fact there are always quite a few heading to or from North America.

I've also used it to track family and friends when i know what flights they are on, mate once messaged me whilst on his flight to Perth using the wifi on the plane so i sent him a screenshot back showing i knew where he was!!

If you check the stockpot draw the ones that have been claimed are greyed out. I won one of these draws and claimed my £10 but, when my daughter (who lives next door) tried to claim it she couldn't.

When she queried it with PMP they told her there was only one winner per postcode on the stackpot draw.

With that in mind, yes it does matter when you get your email.
Thats interesting as the rules dont read as only one winner but if that is the case then yes it would matter when you get the email. Be interesting to know if they do send out in batches or they all go at once as far as they are concerned but the delays come elsewhere.

Mine was stamped at 15:52, if they're not all being sent out at the same time, then that puts those people at a disadvantage as prizes could have already been claimed!
Not sure it works like that does it? Its not one winner per postcode.

Todays main draw has 7 potential winners and the prize will be split between however many of those 7 claim their share by the end of the day. On the stackpot draw if your postcode is there you can claim a £10 per prize but its not just one per postcode.

All the rules are here - https://pickmypostcode.com/rules/

Going back over the emails i've had it seems to be mainly for me between 13:30 and 14:30 occasionally being a bit later nearer 4pm. I assume they send emails out in batches to avoid overloading mail servers etc. You may get a bit less time to check if you get the email later but you cant miss out on a prize other than by not checking and claiming.
