Chesterfield Discussion / Queens Park boating lake
« on: May 29, 2019, 08:57:27 PM »
When and why were the boats taken off the lake in Queens Park. When I was at Willies  1951-55 we spent many happy hours on the boats at lunchtime, in the winter when the lake was frozen over sliding on the ice was great fun, no “jobsworths” to worry about then back to school to dry the trousers by standing near to a radiator.. is Elf and safety responsible?

Chesterfield Discussion / Cordwell Valley
« on: April 28, 2019, 04:44:44 PM »
Just wondering if people still take a picnic and have an afternoon enjoying the peace and quiet of Cordwell Valley. In the 1950s  it used to be a special Bank Holiday treat for parents and children, catching the Holmesfield Bus and travelling for miles and miles. or so it seemed. I remember Pine trees and the ground covered in Pine needles.  Happy days. Now lived in S/W Franc for 16 years and not up to date with the C/field scene.

Must be a wonderful view from above, we’re 69 miles dead north of the highest mount, “Le pic du Midi” and from our south facing terrace we can see, across the valley, over 200 miles of the mountain range  from west to East. At this time of the year they’re covered in snow and the view is spectacular.
In a village about 20 miles to our North is a small church with an exact copy of the crooked spire! When I first saw it I couldn’t believe my eyes.
I have a 1935 Velocette MAC which, when I take it out, wakens up the neighbours and startles the grazing cattle with it’s deep bellow!

thanks again to all who who took the trouble to reply, We now live just to the north of the Pyrenees (Mountains) and as a result, for the last two weeks, the temperature has has not been much above -5 C  .( minus 5C ) in the day dropping even lower -12C during the night.   Some  years ago the English government stopped giving us the Winter Fuel allowance Payements even though it's  colder here than many parts of the UK??????? Doesn't seem fair having paid taxes and Dues for all of our working lives. Anyway thanks again. GeeBee

Chesterfield Discussion / Newbold WMC, is it still going?
« on: January 02, 2019, 10:46:46 AM »
In the 1960's (64-69) we were living on Windermere Road, Newbold and I regularly visited the Club on the Green at the top. Now, 78 years old  retired and living in the South of France I often wonder if it's still in existence. At weekends it was very busy and on one night of the week Ballroom Dances were held with Roy Grattage on the Organ and Tony Burton  playing the drums.  The slot machine took sixpenny pieces and the jackpot could make £5. Not bad as an average weeks wages could be around £14 if you were lucky. Memories!!!!

Before what I knew as the old Central school was re-named  the Manor School what does anyone know of the Old Manor School when it was somewhere up old Road, and the pupils wore Green uniforms. Why was it so named?

Chesterfield Discussion / Duke St. Whitt. Moor
« on: September 28, 2016, 10:52:16 AM »
One for the Over 70's.    Around 1960-64 just down Duke St. through an archway on the left  below the Chip shop, was the "Carlton Caberet Club". Before that a firm called MTM  "Midland Television Maintenance"  used it for a short time, and, before then It was A Billiard Hall run by Mrs Rogers who I think lived in Brimmington. My question is, what was the original  purpose of the building? When it was empty it looked just like a warehouse but for what and for whom?  And is it still being used for anything?

Chesterfield Discussion / Re: Express Dairy. Lockoford Lane

Wow, what a star, just what I'm looking for and thanks so much for taking the trouble. The walk way which is shown more or less cut off the corner where the dairy stood but was not in place , In think, when the Dairy was operating. The Dairy opened Nov 1951 and closed around 1968. Thanks again geebee
