Old Chesterfield / Re: Central School
« on: April 23, 2012, 08:29:09 PM »
OC the building was at the top of Ashgate Road. It was part of Manor School until reorganisation in the 90's when it became part of Brookfield for a short time then as Slacker says it became Manor College. The Avondale Rd team of doctors bought it to build their new surgery. There was a bit of a protest but it has now been demolished and the docs will get a new surgery. I would have loved to see them keep the old building, it had a large central hall with the classrooms surrounding it. Seemed a perfect layout for waiting room and lots of consulting rooms to me. Pity. :(

A beautiful building now reduced to a pile of rubble. Shame

Thanks Fly. I think the ladies are probably right. Will you mention the graffiti please?

Thanks for the help guys. Thats a really good point that the miners were exempt from call up, though I know some did join, often serving as tunellers. Its a bit shocking but war memorials/ rolls of honour are sometimes removed and discarded these days, and whilst I don't think the people connected with the Mineworkers Office would have done such a thing someone coming after them might. :(

TBH I don't mind the cones, they were only on there a few hours. However I'm pretty peed off to see that someone has written "murderer" and "slave driver" on the quite recently refurbished statues and it's been there for over a week. Phone call to the council in order I think.  >:(

Techie Or Suggestions / Creating a web site advice anyone?

A friend of mine, a gentleman in his seventies, is interested in creating a web site to publish some of his extensive local research. He is pretty with it having just written and published a book but needs some advice on the technical stuff. Any ideas where he could start? Any help much appreciated.

Carp I think, also bream, roach, probably tench. I'm pretty sure you can fish it on a day ticket, you don't need to be a member, which is usually cheaper. If you get it touch with a local angling shop they will be able to tell you exactly how much.
Thanks for the welcome :)

« on: February 19, 2012, 08:17:58 PM »
Hi everyone
I'm a newbie and already after info!
I am trying to find information on pubs (dead or alive) in the Stonegravels area ie Sheffield Rd / Newbold Rd and surrounding area for our local history group. If anyone has any memories, stories, or photos that they would be willing to share then I would love to hear from you.

For "therealjr" - mycul said I should ask you!

Many thanks
