I looked at Pete's preferred option and couldn't spot the artwork that the circle was drawing attention to.

I take my life into my hands every morning driving round that roundabout and need my wits about me for when some idiot on the inside of the roundabout decides they are going up Lordsmill Street.
Do you REALLY think I'm going to take any notice of whats on the island?

I had someone cut me up last week on that roundabout. They were in the middle lane and could have just gone  round and onto the right hand lane up the bypass when lights changed - but no, just as I approached to their left they decided to cut over in front of me.

You could have a look when the lights are on red though?

Horrible roundabout, having to look for lights, everybody else in the mirrors and now a sculpture for other people to look at! I think the bypass should link together with slip roads off to the roundabout, would decrease lorries and other traffic going around it, it wouldn't even need raising on a viaduct now they've moved the roundabout over. They could easily link a route up the old Hasland road to the bridge on the first turn off and put a slip road in for south bound travellers.
A lot of potential in that part of town as the busiest gateway that has been missed.

It needs a flyover but that's too costly, or an outer ring road to completely bypass the town.

Can they phase the traffic lights better while they are at it?

Now that would require common sense and planning so, I don't think so!

What's the problem with them?

Coming towards roundabout from Lordsmill St, lights change and only allow four cars through before changing back to red!  :(

Nothing wrong with that, it evens traffic flow from the various directions and ensures no one has to wait long at the lights.

Here's the latest status update on the subject by the DT on FB.

A reminder: be aware of delays on Hornsbridge roundabout in Chesterfield tomorrow - several lanes will be closed and the traffic lights will be turned off as work to install a sculpture on the island gets underway. The advice is to plan ahead and leave extra time for your journey.

My post:
Makes me laugh they can fence it all off and put portacabins on the roundabout on a Friday afternoon without blocking 1 lane.

Come on folks, be brave, it's only a roundabout. You'll be fine. :)
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

Should be fun tomorrow - why could they not postpone it for a week until the kids had broke up?
Nevertheless no traffic lights on the roundabout usually means drivers behave better in my opinion. They have to be cautious rather than running a red/amber light. Common sense takes over.
Lets ban traffic lights for fun/ experiment & see how we get on. I think driving standards would improve.....temporarily

I think lane discipline is far worse on the next roundabout near where I work. I thought it might improve when the road markings were refurbished but it hasn't. Maybe i could invent a sat nav that you set using braille.
