It will soon be upon us and how pleased and proud I am to see so many village and towns erecting Tommy's and Poppy displays.
It brings people and communities together.
i have seen a beautiful display of Poppies on Grassmoor Chapels front and the large black Tommy's around North Wingfield and our own village has a Large Tommy at the side of the Cenotaph - very fitting place.
Y
Saturday I was out for four hours with others putting large poppies on the lamp posts around our village.
I would love to see photo's posted on here of what other Towns and Villages.
I have one or two to post over the next week.
Anyone else seen any great displays?

I think the Tommy in Langwith is badly placed. It looks like he's against the village nameplate wall having a tiddle :-X
I'll try and get a picture (y)

Tupton Village, Poppies on Lamp posts.
Not an easy day last Saturday with the strong winds, it took us four hours but enjoyed it and well worth it!

This one I bought awhile ago now. I took the base into Timpsons and had my grandfathers name engraved on it.
-
This is one with a difference. There were many animals used during the war, they wouldn't understand what was happening and why. How frightening for them.
I could only get a short clip of the information but it is worth a stop and read in Chesterfield Pavements shopping centre.

Here you go (y)

:)) Yes I see what you mean :))

Yes Fly I think that position was very poorly thought out and because of that it has lost a certain gravitas.
Looking at the photo I would move the "Tommy" a couple of feet to the right of the sign and lop some of the foliage that is hanging there making him easier to spot.
Does anyone know if the soldiers are to remain on sentry go after the Armistice, I see no reason why not.
After the Armistice I think there should be a Tommy placed in every Primary/Junior school with the words "Lest we forget" on them and history lessons on this very subject taught.

The Cambridge lot won't like that >:( :( ::) :-X

You honestly couldn't make this up........
A certain village in the South of England had apparently decided against having a "Tommy" in their village as someone in the Parish Council had decreed that "He had a rifle on his back and the gun might offend some people"
Thankfully others {with something between the ears} has managed to overturn the decision.
Apparently these Sentinels can be obtained by donating £250 to the British Legion, "Lest we forget" inscribed at the base

We had full intentions to place a wreath on the cenotaph in Bolsover on the 6th Oct 2018.
!00 years to the day since Our_Lass's great uncle was killed in France.
Our_Lass had her brain tumour removed on the 5th so was still in hospital :(
We'll both be there on armistice day (y)

Very poignant Fly, hope your wife is well.
I was passing through Tupton the other day and noticed an addition to the "Great War" display. There has been an addition, it is the silhouette of a nurse wearing a white nurses cap, the only one I've seen, nice to know they will be remembered too.
-
Yes we have a nurse in Tupton also poppies scattered in the Church Garden.
Across the road in the school there are poppies plus a Soldier Saluting.
We have a Lest We Forget Flag Flying at the top of Green lane in the Community Garden.
There have been some truly wonderful displays and Tributes around the UK this year.

The biopsy results of the tumour weren't good. She starts chemo and radiotherapy on the 21st Nov. :(
-
I've re-posted this picture from another thread that i've removed. It seems more fitting here.
Over 400 miners lost their lives during the war years doing their bit for the country.

Sending you both our love and best wishes - and don't tell me off :P

So many that we do not realise lost lives :(

I still 'lurk around' and am so sorry to read this.
Please wish her my very best and may it be of comfort to you both that I was diagnosed with prostate cancer just over two years ago. I opted for the radical prostatectomy surgery option and, although there were fears it had spread, it has proved not to be the case. I am now on six monthly revues and - so far, so good.
All the best to you both x

Hiya Alsatian, good to see your post and that your are well.
My brother and also a very close friend of ours has the same condition as you. I'm pleased to say they are also doing very well.
Take Care x

Thank you, without wishing to hijack this thread (oops, I already have!) I originally stopped posting due to the constant sniping and petty comments from a certain quarter but, as that party appears to have gone, I've been considering coming back into the fold as there is harmony once more.

The Lest we forget flag
In the community garden in Tupton village.
I have to say there has been some truly wonderful displays in the UK this year and I hope it has generated much more interest in Armistice Day.

I watched the festival of remembrance on BBC last night and it was certainly a moving and emotional programme.

Not had problems for a long time Alsatian. The trouble makers are gone and just us few who get along like adults and can agree to disagree on things sometimes - how it should be!! ;)

I originally stopped posting due to the . . . . .
Things happened back then. People moved on.
This(my), and the ChesterfieldForum, considered combining but Sap1ent just closed his instead.
We are small in numbers now but trying to accommodate posters from either.
Not everybody uses facebook but might still want a local chat place (y)
I'll keep it going as long as I can :-)

A really fantastic attendance today in our village.
I hope it continues to grow now !!
-
Er, there's no one in the picture :-?
-
Oh dear OC it's not one of those "Where's wally's" is it?
Sorry couldn't resist.....
It's really nice to know many places like Tupton excelled themselves with these homages. As you say lets hope it continues to grow.

That's good to hear! I used to enjoy posting and the banter and I can see now that the forum has a happy band of members that enjoy pleasant interaction - which is why I decided to 're-join'.
