Lavante? Went there the other year for two week.
Great hotel, but we didn't rate Benidorm that much.

As stupid as it sounds, flying a day earlier from Manchester,
not Birmingham, as the original quote said, saved us £70 quid.
That's 80% ish of the taxi fares saved  ;D

When you going Fly, we are going to Salou for 10 days in June, also from Manchester.
Have you been before, we love the place.

Lavante? Went there the other year for two week.
Great hotel, but we didn't rate Benidorm that much.

Hotel Gran Bali (purports to be the tallest hotel in Europe) - which is (hopefully) just outside the town of Benidorm and is therefore quieter!

Location: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=hotel+gran+bali&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=hotel+gran+bali&cid=0,0,15483071282971836090&ei=XAEUT66_JIqFhQf66O2qAg&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=image&ved=0CCYQ_BI (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=hotel+gran+bali&fb=1&gl=uk&hq=hotel+gran+bali&cid=0,0,15483071282971836090&ei=XAEUT66_JIqFhQf66O2qAg&sa=X&oi=local_result&ct=image&ved=0CCYQ_BI)

Anyway if we don't like it we won't go again - I'm hoping with it being in term-time and early in the year it won't be full of kids and loud drunks (except us of course!!!)  ;)

July on the Ventura it's the P&O 175 years celebration with quite a few ships of P&O there. We chose it because it's going to Venice and we haven't been there.
The october one is the med again (daughter and partner asked us to go with them) .

Am waiting for April to see where the Indy is stopping on the  transatlantic back to the Uk next year at the moment. 8)

I pass the time reading, watch a film, play some games (can't sleep) but it does get boring doesn't it.
Worst we have ever had was a 14 hour flight to acapulco --- never again!

Rather her than me. I'm like OC and Fly, not so worried about flying, but get bored easily and can get a bit claustrophobic.

Best destinations for me were Lyon, Barcelona and Gozo. Only an hour or two in the air and in Gozo's case another hour and a half from Malta to Gozo by ferry, but what a holiday!

TBH cruising always seemed a bit too laid back for me - don't you get bored?

Claustrophobia, I used to to work in the pit.
It wasn't that bad, as long as your lamp worked.

Turn your helmet lamp of in some areas of the pit and you couldn't see jack.
If your lamp failed, and you were in a tight restrained area, good luck.

Old argument.
What colour is a red scarf in 'total' darkness.
Answer, black.
You can't see it.
It's only red when light reflects off it.

If a spanner falls of a shelf in your shed (wind), and your not there,
does it make a noise.
Answer, no.
Only to the people who hear it fall.

My mums two sisters when in their 70's both flew to Aussie to visit a son of one of them. Not for me either. I do want to go but would ideally go on a ship, length of cruise for that not an option at the moment because of commitments, but it's on my list of 'to do's' Other than that it would probably be fly to dubai and have a couple of nights there both ways to break up the journey.
We used Dubai early last year to hop on a ship to get to India just to cut the flying time down.

Bored ---- gosh no! It can be laid back if you want it too, but can also tiring. Ship berths in a different place every day so get off and either do our own thing (depending where we are) or book a tour. Don't do the full day tours these days unless it's a must for something we want to see as it's just far too tiring. sea days I swim and read. There is also the gym or table tennis, deck quoits, shows sometimes speakers are on the ship. There are also different interests classes being done ---- pool entertainment --- no never get bored.
By the way I love Malta - it's one of my favourite places and I would have liked to have retired there!!

I salute you Fly as anyone who worked down the pits were/are incredibley brave! I had the opportunity to go down a pit back in the 70's and went. How any human was brave enough to work on that coal face which was just a hole bored into coal beats me the men were on the bellies, backs and sides. Going down in the lift alone was scarey (well I'm a wimp!) it went so fast i didn't think we were going to stop!

Years ago I went to Maui, small island of Hawaii. Going there, not so bad as I stayed over in Chicago for a week. Coming back involved a flight from Maui to Big Island, then on to mainland US, then 10 hour flight back to Manchester, I think it should have taken well over 24 hours, but just to break it up again, when landing in the US I stayed overnight in a hotel, so that the whole journey wasn't done in one go.

I was booked to fly on a Pan Am plane when Lockerbie happened!! It was one of the safest plane I've ever flown on given the levels of security. I flew to the states 13 months after 9/11. Same principle. The ships I go on do their safety briefings before they leave port (not one day after) they do them in English (not 5 different languages so that by the time you get to the English all the other nationalities are chattering their heads off and you can't hear) and they are staffed by Captain's who have worked their way up through Seamanship not been appointed as head of Security and promoted in line with the Peter principle!! So yes I will be going!!!!

Scarey isn't it. We were flying 2 weeks after the 9/11 but not the states, security was high at this end though.
Agree about the muster drills they should be done before leaving port, any people joining at other ports should also be expected to attend. Muliti languages do also get on my wick so like you we are selective in who we sail with and Costa has never been one of them.

Mr B and I are celebrating our Ruby Wedding anniversary this month and thoughts have turned to a holiday later in the near.  We have a fancying for Northern Cyprus, perhaps Kyrenia.  Has anyone been there?  If so, do you have any suggestions, comments or advice for us?  Can you suggest a decent travel operator who deals with Northern Cyprus?  I've looked at a few and they all seem a bit of a muchness.  I was wondering if one in particular was better than the others.

It's on page 1  JR

July 17 nighter ex southampton on the Ventura for P&O's 175 year celebration chose this as it stopps in Venice and Dubrovnic and we haven't been there.
October 14 nighter ex southampton on the Indy round Med

We are currently waiting for April to see when, how long, and how much, for Indy's transatlantic back from states to southampton.
Hubby has also mentioned alaska again as the first time we did this we had no luggage!!! Ruined the cruise and Vancouver stay (Heathrowe cock up!! but they blamed Manchester!)

Yes we are going on the grand event andf are travelling down to southampton early and having 2 nights in a hotel so we can have a look araound (plus we thought traffic into southampton would be really busy on the day!

Thanks I will!! Especially Venice as  we are not sure what to do there, (maybe a ships tour and a trip in a gondola?

Never been on the Ventura so hoping it's ok, won't use it again if not. I liked the old Arty even with it's juddering  ;)
Having said that after cruising on the Navigator of the seas I said that was a bit too big for me and definately wouldn't go any bigger, couldn't fault the ship, staff entertainment etc but just the size of it.
Last year my daughter and partner asked us to go with them on the Indy which is bigger than Navigator and to be honest I couldn't fault it and really enjoyed it.
We used the Brilliance of the seas for the Dubai to India last March/April and although it was 'ok' we didn't think it was quite 'up to scratch' but did still enjoy the cruise.

We go to York for weekends sometimes used the Best western Monk Bar (annex room).
Last July we stayed at the Royal York Hotel adjacent to the railway station. (we always use the train).
Love going to the museums or wandering around the shops, sitting at the side of the river with a glass of wine.
Plenty of things to do, try one of the ghost walks -- they are fun!

@Fly Nah - I spoke to 'em on the phone, but they asked me to print out a booking form (.pdf) on site and send it snail mail.

What swayed it for me was a mate who went there last year and mentioned how surprised he was when he saw ashtrays on the tables... So no standing in the rain having a quick fag! :)

@OC - thanks for that.

Best she can make out is:

Sailing this afternoon. It's a beautiful boat with every convenience.
Ann is loving it. We are all 3 together in one cabin with Alan's mother and dad next door.
The food is beautiful.

@ Fly,

Salou was much quieter this year than in previous years, far fewer Spanish around, a reflection of their economy. Also, there were a few closed down places, and some offers about, but not much else. The theme park was very quiet too, compared to previous years. (If you go, go later in the day and make the most of the night time opening.)
However, not much evidence of price movement, most things seem same price as last year. It was very hot so expect it to be a scorcher in August.
Lots of Russians about too.
If you get chance, have a meal at Little Hamptons, one of the cheapest meals we had, and was excellent. I  had their "Jack Daniels Ribs", a bit wary of having ribs as I eat them a lot and usually have something different when we go out but was tempted by the Jack Daniels element; best meal I have had in a long long time.
Don't buy the cooked breakfast at Manchester airport though, cost us £25.00 with cuppas, for two and they were crap.

Cheers for that K4, we're going all inclusive so no eating out, were tight  8)
Not looking forward to a scorcher, that was the idea of holidaying more northern Spain.
Usually take a cob and a bag of crisps for the journey, yup, we're tight  :))

5 weeks today, bring it on  :)

Have a day in Barcelona, but watch your valuables, and don't book it through the holiday rep, get a ticket from the bus station on sea front. Its a good day out...take lots of drinks as well, it will be hot.

We've used the metro loads of times, puts London Underground to shame with speed and cleanliness, not expensive too. In June we paid about £9 Euros for a 10 trip pass, which you can both use so 5 trips each...bargain.

Barcelona isn't meant to be rushed though.
I'm sure you'll have a good one, just another 10 months before our next holiday. :( :( :(

Looks like you spent some time in Barcelona.
Did you go inside Sagrada Familia, truly stunning. We first went about 10 years ago, free to get in and a few pennies to use the lift to get up the spires. Now it was about €13.00 each to get in and extra for the lift, which had to booked in advance due to demand. So we didn't go up the spires but it has come on a long way since our first visit, a tremendous blend of religious art and scientific architecture to create a masterpiece. I'm not religious but it is truly awe inspiring inside.
And I love Gaudi's work, the park is excellent as well.
I should try and upload some of my pics, but I don't use photo bucket or whatever, if I get time later I will sort some out.

Lovely photo's Fly, I don't take many these days but always lovely to look back on aren't they.
What did you think of the Church? Must admit I totally gobsmacked (that takes some doing as well  :)) ) when I saw it, too many different people adding to it over the years for my liking.

Some cracking shots there K4  ;)
We didn't go in, the queues were along 2 sides of the block. Plus we didn't have time.
After our last cock-up going to Barcelona, we were determined to at least see some of the great places.

We went on the Thomson City tour, through the rep.
She was talking all the time we were sat on the coach about where we were going, history etc.
Itenary:
Barcelona 1992 Olympic Stadium, 15 mins photo time.
Mountainside viewing over the city. Not much cop with my jamjar zoom lens digital camera. 15 mins photo time.
Park Guell, 1 hour photo time.
Sagrada Familiia, 1 hour photo time with the rep giving a constant chat about it.
Then the coach dropped us in the main square at the top of La Ramblas, 2 1/2 hour free time, photo time etc.
We walked down La Ramblas to the harbour, across the harbour, then back up past the Gothic Cathederal through the pedestrianised street. Had a bite to eat etc.

I'll try to get more photo's on photobucket in a more organised fashion.

The rep tours are a bit full on for us, we prefer to do it all at a much slower pace.
We visited Park Guell on honeymoon, lots of special memories...some of them include the wife.

Should be finished by 2035, but they need the road space on the right hand side of the Cathederal to finish it.

So there we were wondering how the hell we were ever going to be ready to set off to Southampton on Monday given that 90% of the packing still had to be done (and some of it still had to be washed and ironed)
Then the Mother in law solved the problem for us by falling and breaking her hip.

yeah having gone thick end of 14 months without a holiday and having spent the last 3 months running my department because my boss was off sick I was well and truly ready for a holiday. P155ed off doesn't even start to cover it.
Of course being in retail the chances of re booking any leave this side of Christmas is non existant so I'm just hoping they will take pity on me and let me sort it for as early as possible in the new year.

Got back yesterday from a week in Benidorm (Poniente) which is the quiet part where the Spanish live, had a lovely time - hotel was good with regards to cleanliness, facilities etc - but the food was poor  :( There was a poor choice of hot food and it was served lukewarm.

One day it pi$$ed it down for a short time but the floodwater rose alarmingly -

This shows the walkway under the road from the side of the hotel to the beach, and shows how high the water is

This one is from the walkway towards the hotel

To get to the beach we had to walk along the back roads until we found a bit of dry land!

We used to holiday in Majorca back in the 70's, generally september when it was cooling down. We had some down pours back then with rivers running down the streets. Soon cleared up though.
I have a great photo of the ship leaving Gibralta on our recent hols will try and post it tomorrow.  ;)

@ Fly I had to pace myself each day because of the back problem. We didn't go on any tours but used the shuttle bus at each port and just had a wander around for an hour or so before returning to the ship.
Have been to gp this week who says it's now a muscularskeltal problem and I have to go for physio.
Have had to cancel some of my work now because of this problem, although not too fussed about that as I was winding things down anyway :(

We walked down Les Ramblas in Barcelona Fly, were a bit miffed at the attituted of a couple of the street cafe/bar staff. Quite arrogant in their reply that we couldn't just sit and have a drink without food. Only we were not hungry having had breakfast only a few hours before.
We eventually sat and had a large lager  :-? took me a long time to drink it but we chatted to another couple who were on the ship so it made for a pleasant passing of the time.

We floated back to the shuttle bus and once on the ship had a kip  :)) not used to lunch time drinking orrrr used lagers  :))

@ Alsatian, I take it you like Egypt then? We will stop there on next years cruise but won't get off having been there done it (only on a cruise though) and don't like it. although Sharm is very popular I believe. Where would you stay? We are wondering if our cruise will actually sail because of the troubles still around.

Hope you enjoy it anyway Alsatian, I have heard of that place but never been. As I said only stopped for days whilst cruising, didn't like being hassled by the sellers and certainly didn't like them bringing their camels up to the side of me ( I have a thing about camels). Just didn't feel safe full stop!
Strange but after all the bad press etc that Israel has had over the years I enjoyed my visit there and felt safe.
Many go to Egypt in the spring / summer for some sun and enjoy it as I am sure you will  8)  8)

@ Fly the sea wasn't too bad, looked worse than it was, ship didn't move that much.
Been cold today hasn't it --- roll on summer!!

Just read an article online about cruise ships in Venice. Locals are worried about the effect on the old town - the boats tower above most of the buildings.

You been down that way OC?

She has as have I.
This is the view from a midship deck across to St Marks Square. There are about another 8 decks above me plus all the funnels etc.
The major issue is with the wake caused by the ships.

Yes I was in Venice in July. Great picture Jon, not sure if I posted any as it was there that I had the call telling me my mum had passed away. It's a lovely place to visit and as Jon had told me a brilliant sail in  :)
I have heard that they are thinking of charging some kind of tax which every cruise passenger has to pay if they want to get off the ship in Venice. Not sure if this will be implimented though.

If you want an idea of the size of the ships, this is Azura docked in Dubrovnic last year.
Note the coach and the two people on the quayside to get your perspective.
Azura carrys just over 3000 passengers and around 1200 crew
There are 19 decks in total 14 of which are available to passengers.
7 Restaraunts 12 bars 3 swimming pools, a 788 seat theatre and an outside cinema screen.
She is nowhere near being the biggest cruise ship!!!
