General Discussion / Re: Covid
« on: March 10, 2023, 05:57:41 PM »
My wife and I have both just had it for the first time.  It seems to take everyone differently.  For me at its most active the worst thing was the headaches, and now in the aftermath I'm left with catarrh, dog's breath and brain fog.

I know several people who have had it at least 3 times.  The "natural immunity" that we are supposed to acquire doesn't stop us catching it; it just stops it being dangerous.

I've just brought my wellies in from the shed to warm up indoors.  This is something I do at the beginning of every winter, but it's the first time the beginning of winter has occurred in March!

Meanwhile on the BBC website, in spite of the weather warnings about heavy snow causing all manner of disruption, the actual local forecast hasn't admitted to any snow at all - only sleet.  Maybe snow is too white for the BBC, white being politically incorrect nowadays.  Maybe sleet is better at meeting their diversity targets.

. . . in a report about dental neglect.

"What is most worrying is that the cost-of-living crisis is forcing some parents to cut corners with their children's teeth."

The mind boggles!

DH and his buyers believe that he's destroyed his art but not its value, by converting it into non-fungible tokens.  NFTs are like the King's New Clothes.  To a wise man, they are worth a lot of money, but to a fool, they are nothing.  Or is it the other way round?  There's a hint in an old saying: "A ???? and his money are soon parted".

I'm wondering if Harriet Harman's investigation will continue if Boris applies.  If he becomes PM and is then found guilty of misleading Parliament, he'll be banned from the Commons and there will have to be yet another leadership contest!

. . . and Boris only supported her because he knew she'd be crap and give him a chance to get back in!

Truss imitating Thatcher:
You turn if you want to;  the lady, erm, the lady will perhaps turn tomorrow.

It's not really "these Tories" this time. (A lot of Tory MPs are very unhappy.)  It's just Idiot Woman plus a few hangers-on who will toady up to anyone for a bit of power.  Their reward for doing so will be oblivion at the next election.  I doubt if we'll see the Tories in power again in my lifetime after this.

Prophetic Peter Brookes cartoon in The Times yesterday.  HMQ with a look of abject horror on her face on meeting La Truss.  Couldn't take any more.

She seems to be modelling herself on the Queen of Hearts, i.e. she's going to do three impossible things before breakfast:
  • get Britain working again
  • sort out the NHS
  • deal with the energy crisis and secure our future energy supplies
Yes Your Majesty, of course we trust you.

And beyond, I fear.  He intends to remain "active" on the back benches.  I imagine he's planning dirty tricks already.

And now we have the resignation of his ethics advisor.  The last I read, he was trying to decide whether he really needs an ethics advisor to ignore, or three of them, or none at all.

Boris wouldn't know an ethic from a flying saucer.

Politics / Saint Boris?
« on: June 03, 2022, 09:53:51 PM »
This morning I heard Boris's voice coming out of the next room, where my wife was watching the Jubilee celebration service from St Paul's.

". . . whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.  Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you."

Appropriate, I think, for the words of St Paul to be read in St Paul's Cathedral, but whoever gave them to Boris to read, especially  in the middle of Partygate, must have either a magnificent sense of irony or no sense at all!

Quite right, but . . .
At the end of the day it's Labour v Conservatives
and they like it that way.  That's why it won't change.

As far as the recent results go, Lib Dem gains in locals don't necessarily translate into anything in a general election.  They are a party with a local mindset, and can be very effective locally, but nationally they don't have a good reputation and are currently quite obscure.
