General Discussion / Re: Electric cars

I think we are a long way off where you can rely on electric cars as a main car with no other option when you are going to be doing longer journeys.

We currently have two petrol cars but we are seriously considering an electric car to replace one of them. Like the vast majority of people our main journeys are well within the range of most electric cars and general nipping to places etc is fine but we would have the other car for longer journeys like going away on holiday etc where to be honest with the two of us, the little one and everything that goes for her and the dog we need a big estate anyway so its fine. The range of most electric cars would easily do the daily commute to and from work for both of us or when we are knocking about the rest of the time with charging at home plus my wifes employer has a number of charge points installed that she can use to leave it charging whilst she's sat at her desk. Also some off the newer ones would probably do the trips to Scarborough that we do fairly often as well without a charge although we can park it up to charge once we get there if we want to. I wouldnt fancy our 1700 mile round trip to France that we do some years in one though as it stands!!

Sh*t Watch Update!

Been through Old Brampton and Baslow today and both are suffering the same agricultural aroma, although not as strong!  MD
We live up that way at Brookside and you quite often get the countryside aroma post muck spreading, i'm sort of used to it now after living there for a number of years and growing up on Somersall Lane towards the fields on Walton Back Lane where you got it as well. Throw in the fact i worked as a kid collecting eggs at a place on the way into Holymoorside on Walton Back Lane which was far worse than anything you get on the fields these days and it doesnt bother me at all.

In fact the only time it becomes an issue is if i take the dog up onto the fields that way and let him off the lead not realising we are about to go in a field thats been done and he has a good roll around in it and takes the smell home with him!!

All the more reason to use the bus I would have thought!
With the cost of buses its probably cheaper to drive and park!! I'm only at Brookside but it costs me £2 to get halfway down Brampton let alone what it would cost to get into town and back!!

Again fairly sure the train still runs just only at times when its likely to be busy...things like school holidays etc.

The Grassmoor one was probably down to the roadworks that have been in Grassmoor a fair bit recently. Other week i got caught in three way ones at the roundabout at the top end of the park then last week there were some halfway down the main road. The three way lights on the roundabout were causing some biggish tailbacks when i got caught in them.

Part of the issue is the police and council have to follow the correct process for moving them on and the gypsies dont have to do anything so have the upper hand. I work in Derby on Pride Park and there has just been some on a car park next to the football ground, left it a right mess after staying for a few days. Then some more have rolled up on Allenton Market just as the others left.

Loyalty bonuses only seem to get included if you contact them to get involved. I used to be with More Than and once i rang up to say i was leaving as a completely new customer quote was massively lower than my renewal and i could beat it just by a quick search on a comparison site. All of a sudden it came down quite a bit when they said i qualified for a loyalty bonus for staying. I queried why this wasnt included on the renewal as that would be me staying as well and he bumbled through a completely nonsensical reply. In the end i stayed with them as it was about the same as most of the other quotes and i couldnt be bothered messing about changing companies. Following year i left as their renewal was nonsense and they couldnt get close to any other companies.

Article on BBC News in the local derbyshire section. Appears it was a "visitor" to the area that made the complaint after cattle with calves approached his dog that was on a lead and they felt unsafe. To make things worse it would appear that pregnant cattle have been able to be sold but other cattle will be slaughtered because of this. Real sad outcome for these great looking creatures.

Not sure if folk are aware but the Highland Cattle that roam up on the moor near Baslow and Curbar will soon be gone for good. The farmer who owns them has had to sell them after he was forced to take them off the moor following one complaint to the Health & Safety Executive from one walker who claimed he felt in danger from them. Guy has started a petition against the decision and in just over 24hrs its gone past 7000 signatures from folk who agree that its a stupid decision.

These great animals have been up there for years without issue and one clown means we wont get to share this great part of the countryside with them.

I have mine in a cupboard under the sink. It has my dishwasher tablets in ;)
I would have continued using it for raw food waste but they made a mockery of it by only doing it seasonally.
To be honest its not difficult to think of any manner of ways it can be used more usefully!!

I used to put glass at the side then watched each time as the black box was tipped into the blue bin which was then shoved in the truck. Since our black box got broken by them wedging it back in the bin i just chuck everything in the blue bin and be done with it.

Then dont get me started on how bins are left after they are done....when we used to be on Heaton Street it was almost impossible to walk down the pavement as bins were all over the place, you wouldnt have a chance with a pushchair or in a wheelchair then our bin was actually taken from outside our house, emptied and then left 30yds round the corner on Church Street! Now we've moved its not so much the pavement thats blocked but every few weeks i have to move the empty bin from blocking the drive when i get home.
