Sport / Yet another shrine
« on: July 13, 2025, 11:49:20 AM »
The death of Diogo Jota.

When I heard what had happened on the news the other day I thought, surely he must have been speeding, thinking it had happened here but as more information unfolded I thought "Well I'm not surprised"

A 28 year old driving a Lamborghini at 12:30 a.m. in Spain having a puncture overtaking another vehicle you can see why I'm not surprised.
I can take a well educated guess as to what happened and I wasn't even there.

So what's happening? shrines going up left right and centre, fans in Liverpool feigning tears because the news cameras are rolling it's pathetic.......
GET A GRIP, he wasn't a ground breaking scientist who had discovered cures for tropical diseases, he wasn't a charity aid worker who had spent his adult life in third world countries tending the sick and dying... he was a footballer, he kicked balls into a net for a living and was very well paid for it.
Don't get me wrong all deaths are tragic but there are those that can be placed in the "Shouldn't have happened category" and I believe this one fits the bill.

General Discussion / Tea leaf's
« on: April 08, 2025, 12:33:00 PM »
Noticed on the news the ever resourceful band of tea leaves have found a way of making more money.

They are getting copper wire by sawing off the pumps of electric charge points used for cars this means if you go to re charge your car you may not be able too.

Chesterfield Discussion / W.H.Smith
« on: March 30, 2025, 11:05:30 AM »
It seems this is another high street name on the chopping block, been in existence for over 150 years. Not a shop I liked to go in as they weren't cheap and I found most of the staff surly. I personally I only went in there to use the post office which brings up the question of where does the P.O. go when Smith's closes?

General Discussion / Heat pumps
« on: March 29, 2025, 02:20:24 PM »
Heat pumps {just like smart meters} I wouldn't thank you for either.

Just read of an old couple who were one of the very first to have a heat pump installed many years ago. It was installed with help from a government grant and yes {along with solar panels} saved them money over the years, but now their heat pump is reaching the end of it's life and needs replacing. Unfortunately for them the government grant is only given for the first initial heat pump installation so a replacement is going to cost them an arm and a leg. They have had quotes for a replacement and all in the region of £17,000, so what monetary savings were made over the years seemed to be a waste of time.
So by all accounts trying to sell your house with a heat pump will more than likely be a hindrance than an asset.

I first noticed the price difference on the Rykneld homes site months ago. Most of the older properties for rent had a rent of between £85 to £100 per week, they built some new o.a.p. bungalows I believe in Danesmoor with these heat pumps fitted and the rents for those were in the £150 + p/w mark.

General Discussion / sell by dates.
« on: March 08, 2025, 07:49:24 PM »
I have now got into the habit of checking the sell by date of EVERY bit of foodstuff I buy, and with good reason.

For example I still love Heinz tinned spaghetti and I buy 3 tins at a time, the last lot I bought was just a month ago and checked the s.b.d. on each can, the first tin I picked up {obviously the one at the front} had the s.b.d. of 10/24 so went to the back of the tins and got 3 that will last till 2026.
The wife came back from town today and had bought a packet of mixed nuts and raisins from a well known chain {very cold in there!!} and she opened them this afternoon and found the s.b.d. on the pack is January 2025, o.k. they're still edible but that's not the point. Many years ago we were in Morrisons Staveley and on our list was cat food for our cat, I started to reach onto the shelves and couldn't believe it, the packs of food were crawling with maggots, I told an assistant and asked her to fetch the shop manager and get him to look at the cat food, two minutes later there were at least six assistants clearing the shelf scooping the cat food into small wheelie bins and that's just cat food!.
This is the reason I don't order shopping on line half the time you don't know what your getting.

My local shop in the village started me off checking as having been caught out a couple of times. I watch the assistants as I walk round re stocking and I could see they just push the older stock to the back of the shelf and put the new at the front, basically because they're too bone idle to do it properly.

General Discussion / Net zero
« on: February 19, 2025, 02:08:17 PM »
Apparently {according to the experts} if the U.K. where to go 100% green tomorrow, globally it wouldn't make one iota of difference to the worlds climate.

China, America, India to name but a few are belching out that much carbon daily it would take a miracle to just slow down global warming let alone stop it.

90% of the people responsible for this mess won't be here in another fifty years but our grandchildren will.

General Discussion / Alternative transport
« on: February 18, 2025, 02:43:31 PM »
Now that I'm getting on in years I've given some thought to stop driving when I reach a certain age {or sooner if circumstances dictate} and so I've been having a glance at alternative modes of transport should I wish to continue going on holiday in this country or visit relatives out of Derbyshire.

Judging by what I've seen so far as regards trains and National coaches it's looking a bit costly, and these are todays prices
For example the two of us to visit a relative down south at todays prices by train, two return tickets with two train changes going and two coming back the cheapest is about the £240 mark.
National coaches return tickets with one coach change going and one coming back is about the £80 mark, the prices vary a lot depending on what day and time you travel and both of which run on schedules so you can't really please yourself.
We are going on a coach trip to a hotel down south later this year for 5 days, full board total price £990, if I had booked the trip myself and driven I estimate expenses and room to be £600 tops.

No wonder people in their eighties and nineties are still driving........there's no incentive not to.

General Discussion / Car wash
« on: February 11, 2025, 02:03:09 PM »
I don't know about you but I wouldn't trust my car in the hands of these car washes. The last time I used one was when I was part chopping my car for another and wanted it to look tidy that was just before Covid.
I wash my own car, that way if I scratch it I've no one else to blame, besides I've seen some of these lads at the wash lathering cars with an old rag cleaning from bottom to top so any grit picked up from the sills will scratch the paintwork as they work over your car.

Every now and again I might use the jet wash at Graingers at Holmewood to get the thickest off but last time I went up they were out of order that was a few weeks ago, I went past yesterday and it still looks like they are out of order.

Entertainment / Lending Stream
« on: February 11, 2025, 01:50:31 PM »
There has been a lot of adverts on lately for a company called Lending Stream.

It does exactly what it says on the tin, short term loans especially for people with iffy credit {where have we heard that before amigo's!!!}

Not surprisingly the interest is eye watering, an example is borrow £300 over six months pay back £578 that's almost 100% profit and providing you don't miss a payment.
During the advert it says don't borrow from that slimy toad down the pub, the only difference between the slimy toad and L/S is the latter won't come round and break your legs for none payment......other than that it's exactly the same.
Looked at the reviews for L/S on line and a good % of them singing it's praises are what I'd refer to as "rent a review", people to whom companies pay to put in good reviews convincing the gullible that it's a brilliant company.

Chesterfield Discussion / "Oak" in the Shambles
« on: February 06, 2025, 08:08:30 PM »
Looks like the Royal Oak in the Shambles has been bought after it's stood empty a while. Didn't read all of it but apparently it's been bought by a couple of Ex teachers. Who says teachers are badly paid?

I haven't been in the Oak in donkeys years, I remember it was a decent pint but it always looked like the bar scene from Star Wars.
I wish them luck.

Just been looking at some {approximate} figures for the countries population census..

2024...........69 million
2023......68.5 million
2019.....67 million
2001....58.5 million
1955.....51 million
1951.....43.5 million
1841.....20.5 million
Daily ratio 2024 {approx} was deaths 1836.....births 1872.....intake of migrants 1142

From 2019 to 2023 we lost thousands to Covid yet the population still increased!! from 2019 to 2024 {5years} it increased by just 2 million, yet from 1955 to 2001 {46 years} it only went up by 7.5 million? at this rate we will be fit to bursting in another 20 years.

Chesterfield Discussion / Peak gateway resort
« on: January 23, 2025, 01:38:05 PM »
Well it's finally started... the Peak gateway "resort" at Sheepbridge. According to the D.T.it's the "long awaited" £1billion pound project.

They aren't kidding when they say it's long awaited, when was working for a company {on sheebridge trad est} the staff were always talking about it and a few said when built they would apply for jobs there, I left that job in 2008 so this has been in the pipeline for what 18 years?? so you can imagine if they had started and built it in 2008 just think of the cost compared to today, it wouldn't surprise me to find it's doubled maybe even trebled.

"Fully implemented the resort would sustain thousands of jobs". That's a bold statement, I'm assuming they include auxiliary and support staff such as deliveries and the like in that.

General Discussion / Cease Fire Gaza
« on: January 17, 2025, 02:19:45 PM »
In short it won't last 5 minutes.

The Israeli's don't really want to negotiate with "terrorists" who basically can't be trusted, Hamas though having the cr*p kicked out of them are still working on the principal that they're winning when all they've got, as regards the upper hand, is the hostages and they know that once they return ALL the hostages Israel is really going to go after them, and knowing Israel the last 15 months will seem like a picnic in comparison.

Although Israel is guilty of overkill {excuse the pun} it would be bad for Israel, and the middle east, to let Hamas "regroup" which is what they will ultimately do.
