Snap!
Bit disappointed though as had a call today and we have had to go on a waiting list for the pre-cruise hotel stay in New Orleans
May look at Atlanta instead as we land there  :(

Wow that looks lovely Fly, right on the beach as well.
We used to holiday in Majorca in the 70's. A place called Cala Masquida but I think they changed the name of the place as when we went a few years ago no one had heard of it
Sure you wil enjoy it. 8)

Every year when the Thomson brochure came out dad used to say that he wanted to go to that hotel. Never did make it.

Only a couple of days later did I realise the easter school holidays were the week before and after good Friday.
Not two week after
Just cost us another £200 to change the date to the week earlier  ::) :-X

OOOppsss - one big boobie there Fly bynight

Meanwhile I have been looking at Atlanta but it doesn't seem as good as New Orleans - I just wanted a ride up the mississippi river in an old steamer. :'(

Our boss will be over joyed that we have rebooked so he doesn't have to find two drivers to cover our contract school runs.
I'm sure he'll gladly fund the extra ££££ it's cost us  ;)

I had a moan about mine after booking last year for this year as we couldn't get the two/three night stay we would have liked before joining our ship.

BUT had an email yesterday telling us that we are being checked in overnight in a marriott hotel in New Orleans pre cruise which means we will probably now get to see some of N/O before  our transatlantic cruise starts. Ok it's not quite what we wanted but any crumb is better than none!

Yipppeee Thanks RCI  :-*

We went to that hotel about ten years ago.If I remember every room has a sea view.I think we  were on the 5th floor which was brilliant. There are plenty of bars and eating places within a couple of minutes walk.
We are going to Alcudia in June which is really nice.Hope you enjoy it.

I'm not going anywhere half so exotic as you lot.  Pootling down to Porthmadog for my jollies.

However, I am very envious of Pam and her New Orleans visit.  A place I'd love to go    :)

Thanks for the welcome  Fly.I forgot to say that you can walk to Magaluf in about fifteen minutes. You know when you are in Magaluf because  in Palma Nova there are small grey concrete balls every so often at the side of the road which become black when you enter Magaluf.
We have also been to the San Matias Beach Hotel  which is next door to the Santa Lucia and whilst we were there the entertainment  at night was brilliant and I suspect you can easily just walk in,but that was about eight years ago.

Here's one for you Umpire, we've been to Majorca twice before.
Seen Old Alcudia, bull ring etc, Cuevas del Drach  ;D , is there anything else in Majorca that is really worth a visit.
We went to Benidorm the other year  ::) Only thing we liked about it was a half a day trip out to Guadalest.
Title: Re: That's the jollies 2014 sorted :-)
Post by: Umpire on March 21, 2014, 08:08:04 PM
It really depends what sort of holiday  you want.Palma is obviously worth a visit and Puerto Soller on the West Coast is supposed to be worth a visit(never actually been myself).About 40 years ago we went to the pearl factory at Manacor but I am not sure whether it is still there.Caves of Drac  as well.
I must admit our kind of holiday is to have a stroll in the morning, round the pool for a swim in the afternoon and go to a bar in the evening ,have a pint and people watch.
We have been to most of the resorts in Majorca  and I have to say there is not one that we would not go to.
My favourite place in that area however is Santa Eulalia in Ibiza -love it.

Hope this helps.

Been to Ibiza about 4/5 times now. Think I've visited every town.
Same with Torremolinos, Benelmadana, Mijas, Malaga. Been there seen it. Got the photo's.
3rd time we're going to Majorca, but 1st time in that area, hence me asking. Owt close by worth a day out.
Well, a couple of hours stroll, midday ish LOL  ;)

Never been to Torremolinos  so we have just booked to go in September.Did you like it there?
Title: Re: That's the jollies 2014 sorted :-)
Post by: Fly on March 22, 2014, 09:34:29 AM
The local train is brilliant. It runs all the way from Fuengirola (west) to Malaga (east). There's something to visit at just about every station along the length of the track.
Feungirola market, harbour. Montemar park, beach, shops. Benalmadena, Paloma Park, Marina. Playa Major retail outlet, watch the planes fly over into the airport. Malaga City, beautiful for sightseeing.
There you go, a weeks worth of places to visit all within 30 mins travelling time from Torremolinos Central Station.
Title: Re: That's the jollies 2014 sorted :-)
Post by: Umpire on March 22, 2014, 08:30:20 PM
While  we were in Fuenguerola we caught the train to Benalmadena. As you know the station is a good  mile away down Heart Attack Hill (a mate of mine actually had a heart attack trying to walk up it)to the beach.
There was no way we were going to attempt to walk back up  so we had a taxi for about 3 euros back to the station.
I think the trains and buses are brilliant compared with ours and so much cheaper.

Little tip if you go on holiday with Thomson.
You can now print off your own tickets and your own boarding passes online.
So you turn up at the airport, show the Thomson desk your paper work, leave your cases, and go through security  :)
What they don't tell you online, is that after every step of the way whilst doing it online, you have to log out of your account, then log back in.
eg: Log in, goto manage my booking.
Select your seats. Log out, log in.
Add extras. Log out, log in.
Passport details of all your party. Log out, log in.
etc etc. Never ending. Took me best part of an hour.   :-X

Will email Thomson. It's a new system and they might be unaware of the problem.
Can't help myself, I've got an NVQ-3 qualification in System Design and this one just isn't working  :))

Have been using the 'E Tickets' for a few years now for the cruises.
I don't have to log in and out as you do although it's not with Thomsons.
I checked in online awhile ago and have printed my e tickets although I always double check a few days before to make sure nothing has changed.
I can book and pay for any excursions we want to do, book seating in one of the  speciality dining rooms for day/time etc

I also filled in and paid for our entry documents into America.
Last week I selected the aircraft seats and paid for the upgrade - all online.

Have never actually checked in on the flight the night before as I'm not too sure how this works

We started going with Jet 2 after problems with frequent delays with other operators. At EMA it just means that instead of standing in the normal queue you go to one which checks your bags in and away you go.
I presume other operators have a similar system.

We have used Jet 2 on one occasion and this year fly back with them, flying out however is with Delta and I've read some terrible reviews on them. Not looking forward to the long haul that's for sure!

Santa Ponsa - Trip Advisor gives rave reviews of hotel but a bit worried about last few as they said airport transfers were 2 1/2 hours instead of 45 minutes as advertised!!
Title: Re: That's the jollies 2014 sorted :-)
Post by: Fly on April 25, 2014, 07:45:33 PM
Santa Ponca is about 45 mins transfer, trust me, been there, lovely place, great for shops etc
We went there on the 104/5 bus a couple of times from Palmanova where we were staying.
Also caught the 102 from Santa Ponca to get to Porto d' Andraxt, that's well nice too, worth a visit.
The buses are quite cheap, but don't trust the time tables, the drivers don't use them  !!!

Got back around 9am this morning to cr@p weather!!!

Hotel, food, weather and resort good - downsides:

1) airport transfers advertised as 45 minutes, didn't say you had to sit on coach for an hour before setting off! Our hotel was last drop off so got a taxi - 20 minutes to hotel. Return transfer meant we were first on - 3.35am!!! Once again got a taxi, apparently it's regular occurrence according to Trip Advisor.

2) hotel had 1 stag and 2 hen parties at weekend - language and rowdy behaviour (dropping shorts and dancing naked) wasn't what we expected in a family hotel.

Other than that had a really good time.

Big clap please cos I uploaded these without using photo bucket  O:-)

I didn't take many photo's as it was a Transatlantic cruise so we spent a lot of time on the ship, sunning and reading.
We flew to Atlanta from Manchester then on to New Orleans. Very tiring as it took about 22 hours.

Lovely ship and hot sunny days.

Drank too much  :( Unfortunately we went into the private top tier lounge each evening where the drinks were free for 3 and half hours - and they just kept topping us up  ^-^  ^-^.
Met some lovely people from all over the world though.
Really enjoyed it  8)

I forgot to mention this but there were 4 dogs on the ship!!
2 were working dogs as in a guide dog for blind chap the other was a hearing dog.
No idea about the other two but we did see them.
One night in the Lounge we were chatting to  the couple with the guide dog. They were from America and we enjoyed the time spent with them.
I just 'had' to ask the question which was burning in my mind???

What about the toileting ???

It seems they have a designated tray ( which I already new from a previous cruise when there was a lady with a small breed dog on board) This was a large Labrador.
Apparently they are trained to 'go' at certain times --- i never knew that!!
Marvelous what training can be done with them.

Any engineers who can tell me what the shadow under the water is just to the front of the ship?

It's the first time i have ever noticed this but strange enough we noticed another ship with something similar going into one of the ports?

I'm not sure if it was the pointy bit, all I know is that it looked like a big balloon just below the water surface.
Fly I'll send the short video clip of the ship tomorrow, mind you you can't see the front as it was backed into port, quite a size though.

Got back from Majorca on Thursday but we were a bit concerned when the French Air Traffic Controllers went on strike on the Tuesday.Luckily they called it off on Wed night(we have been caught before with them striking).
The Jet 2 rep said it had been chaos on Wednesday at Palma airport which is always busy without any delays.Apparently all Jet 2 planes  had a minimum of  4 hours delay.
Anyway we landed spot on time at EMA  airport to round off a super holiday.

Pleased you enjoyed your holiday Umpire, Majorca was the first over seas holiday we ever took back in the early 70's love it there.
We just missed one of their strikes in route to Dubai to join a ship, we were the lucky ones as others on later flights had some horror stories to tell the worst being having a choice - either miss the boat ( sorry ) or get on it without their luggage.

Any photo's to share?

Went to Wakefield yesterday to meet up with my cousin who lives in Dorset, and, along with her partner, has a canal barge.

'Set sail' around 11:00 and, apart from stopping for a spot of lunch at a riverside pub and an enforced stop due to heavy rain, 'berthed' at Castleford around 18:00. Caught train back to Wakefield to pick car up and return journey took 15 minutes!!!!  :o

Had a lovely time and was nice meeting up with her again (met up at Macclesfield canal last year).

Next stop Kos in September  8)

Love the photo of the waves, it brought back memories of my friend and I in our teens on holiday in Blackpool.

The sea was rough, we sat at the back of the rocks area to the south - got wet through - obviously - by one huge wave which just carried on and on and on  :))

Mr Gert and I are hoping to have a holiday in Correlejo, Fuertaventura first week November.  Has anyone been there?  We've been told of a hotel called The Hesperia Bristol and I wondered if anyone knew of it.

The best deal I can get is unfortunately with Ryanair.  I'd dearly love to upgrade to another airline but its quite costly.  We have to stay within budget because Mr Gerts travel insurance is almost £100 for a week due to his pre-existing health issues.

So, that beggars another question....who's flown with Ryanair?  Was it the dreadful experience I'm led to believe?   8)

Had a quote from Staysure Pam, and also a few others, all around same price.  It's coming down each year.  Last time we went away, the insurance cost as much as Mr Gert's cost of holiday!   >:(

On our last holiday we were flying with Delta - read some terrible reviews - well most of them were terrible to be honest.
I was dreading it - but we had no problems with the seats and the flights were on time.
Don't fret too much Gerty all will probably be fine  :)

Hi Gertie,
Me and the wife have been there a.few years ago.I have never heard of that hotel but the best thing to do is to look on Trip Advisor. We stayed at The Blue Bay Palace but I think it has changed its name.
Correlejo is only a small place but has plenty of the usual shops but beware because when we there the shop staff badgered you  to try and get a sale. The beach is not very big but was very clean.
Whilst we were there we went on the blanket trip where you have to sit through a presentation trying to sell mattresses. We had no intention of buying but they did take us on a free bus tour of the northern part of the island so we thought it was worth it.If you want to anything else let me know and I will try to help.
Just got back from Torremolinos and had a brilliant time-the weather was round about 90 all week and never saw a cloud. We have been going with Jet2 for the last three years and cannot fault them.

Right, I've stopped faffing about - I booked it.  Fuertaventura here I come in a few weeks  8)

Good deal on Travel Republic, but regrettably it's Ryanair.  I guess there has to be a trade off, though I'm given to understand that their seats are now pre-bookable.  I'll be taking advantage of that for the leg room.  My great long things won't fit normal aircraft seat space, unless I want compressed knee-caps after 4 hours.  I bet Fly has the same problem!

I'm usually Ok as long as the person in front doesn't recline their seat.
I missed the 'book your seat' by one day this time and didn't get the back row seats we usually book.
So I booked row 14 in the middle of the plane. There's no one directly behind us, there's a door LOL

Will do Pam.  I hope to have plenty as I'm taking the big camera this time.  Might be naffing Mr Gert off with moaning that I can't find the lens cap, or the battery is flat  8)

New camera, Ibiza, bring it on.
Can I just add, this is an extra holiday this year due to the fact me and Our_Lass have gone smoke free for over 2 YEARS !!

I've flown Ryanair 3 times and never had a problem. Their major plus is they are very rarely delayed. If the plane is on the ground it's not earning money. If you want to talk about an airline staffed by a bunch of idiots try flying Continental!!!

LOL, oh dear.  Well, my fingers are crossed for a trouble-free Ryanair experience.  At least I have extra leg room seats booked.  Can't be doing with squashed knee caps!  8)

2001 flew with them from Birmingham to Orlando to take my daughters to Disney,
Flying out they split us up so that I had the 2 girls with me and my wife (now ex) who wasn't a particullarly good flier was about 15 rows back. Not ideal but we took it.
coming back the check in put us on the emergency exit seats. Now bear in mind my girls were 7 and 5 so i pointed out we couldn't have those seats.
Yes we know say check in but they will sort it on the plane.
Get into the seats and the stewardess says 'you can't sit there'!!!
Err yes I know I told you lot that.
So they then decide they are going to split the four of us up over the space of about 10 rows.
When I pointed out that this wasn't going to happen (like leaving the girls without parents was ever an option) they threatened to off load me for being argumentative.
Then they found 3 seats together for wife and girls and offered to put me in business class!!!
Eventually amazingly they realised that the outer seat of the opposite row was occupied by a man travelling on his own so they sent him to business and gave me his seat.
All the arguments delayed the flight which made us very popular with the other passengers, not!
so the next 7 hours was spent in the company of passengers giving me the evils and cabin staff who had me labelled as a trouble maker so avoided serving me.

That's not very impressive JR and the staff were extremely unprofessional.
Did you write a letter of complaint?

Basicaly, BMI had us delayed by about 6 hours because they didn't have a plane at the airport.
Sad thing is, they had done the exact same thing the week before. Talk about forward planning !!

Fly, have you checked on the airline website about how to store your batteries during travel?  They might not be able to go in the hold baggage.  Ryanair said you can only take 2 spare to be wrapped individually in something like bubble wrap, and not to be stored near anything metal.
