TK Maxx.....the posh jumble sale shop!
A recent TV programme identified the ploy o this company, selling designer label goods, made specifically to sell at a highly discounted price, thanks to inferior materials and production techniques.

Rants / Re: inconsiderate drivers and their parking habits

Wider bays would mean a lesser number of bays = less revenue for paid car parks.

Supermarkets are only intent in getting the highest footfall possible, so provide the max number of narrow bays to achieve that aim.

It is just so easy and quick to buy online these days....but you cannot beat wandering around the shops, it is a much more social way to shop...The out-of-town developments don't help though....car parking charges....etc.

I have, over the last couple of hours, spent just short of £180 without leaving my armchair.  A parka, workshop manual, socket tool, car parts x5, all of which would probably available in our historic but ghostly town centre.  Proof, if any were needed, of the power of the internet. (And no car parking fees!!)

Chesterfield Discussion / Re: Heat

3rd July 1976 the temp was recorded in Cheltenham at 35.9C (96.6F)
The 1976 British Isles heat wave led to the second hottest summer average temperature in the UK since records began. At the same time, the country suffered a severe drought. It was one of the driest, sunniest and warmest summers in the 20th century, although the summer of 1995 is now regarded as the driest.
Incidentally, whilst on holiday in Tunisia a few years ago, right on the edge of the Sahara desert, we had a 'heat bomb' lasting a couple of hours of 52C, murderously hot!!

General Discussion / Re: Driving test just how many fails is too many?
« on: April 20, 2022, 10:44:25 PM »
I managed the Driving Theory Test Centre in Derby in 2005/06.

It was not unusual for people to return numerous times.  The record that I believe was the highest in England was 39 failures for the theory test.  It was also quite disturbing to recall, that the testing for candidates for Driving Instructor status, also had many numerous failed attempts.

Whether it was an an urban myth , I don't know, but allegedly in Germany after 5 driving test failures you are deemed as psychologically unfit to be the holder of a driving licence and are banned from further attempts to obtain one.

Our daughter worked at M&S Head Office in London around 12 or 13 years ago. During her time there, she was delighted that our Chesterfield Store had been listed for a total refurbishment and not inexpensive refit, as there were many issues with the building.

Suffice to say, that the project never happened, hence the plan to move to a modern building close, but not in the main shopping area.

Chesterfield Discussion / Re: Stagecoach in Chesterfield
« on: April 20, 2022, 09:55:25 PM »
I worked as a Driver for Chesterfield Borough Transport from 1979 until 1990.

In 1985 (?) at the opening of the Inner Relief Road, we held a protest at the Government's proposals to deregulate bus companies, citing the National Bus Company as monopolising public transport. This was followed later by a huge demonstration through Central London.
My claim to fame was creating a banner reading ' Chesterfield Transport - Born Of Social Need 1897 - Killed By Tory Greed 1987' which attracted some media attention in London.

The National Bus Company was a nationalised bus company that operated in England and Wales between 1969 and 1988. NBC did not run buses itself, but was the owner of a number of regional subsidiary bus operating companies. Sound familiar?
Privatisation happened, with CBT staff buying out the Council owned bus company for the princely sum of £800 per employee, (the first company in the UK to do so)

Brian Souter was born in the Scottish city of Perth. His father was a bus driver and as a child Brian often travelled on bus routes with his father.
Using his father's redundancy money, with his sister Ann Gloag and his brother-in-law Robin Gloag established the Stagecoach Group in 1980, running buses from Dundee to London.
Following the deregulation of bus services in Great Britain, expansion continued, and in the late 1980s Stagecoach acquired National Bus Company subsidiaries in Cumberland and Hampshire, and the East Midlands, Ribble, Southdown and United Counties companies. Stagecoach also bought bus operations in Scotland, Newcastle and London, with Manchester being added a few years later.

The chances of CBC buying back the bus operation in Chesterfield, would be non existent.
