General Discussion / The Garden
« on: April 22, 2025, 09:55:28 AM »
Our garden is mainly lawn these days with trees around all sides.
I use planters for my flowers and herbs, it's easy maintenance.

During the winter I lost what I'll call a Broom bush when the wind actually uprooted it, despite efforts to settle it back into the ground it's obviously dead!

I've bought another to replace and it will go with the other bushes I have which give good ground cover in that top corner of the garden, and so cut down on garden work, I've bought few bedding plants as well.

I also have an old tin bath which I use for flowers, this is my youngest brothers corner who died in 2014.
The blue bells and other spring flowers are out now giving a smattering of colour.

I'm looking forward to a decent summer!

General Discussion / The Pope
« on: April 22, 2025, 09:43:44 AM »
As you will know the Pope has died. RIP.
He was very ill for a long time and given his age one would assume he wouldn't survive. He was obviously a strong gentleman and managed a brief spell on the balcony not so long ago to say hello to his people.
Even then it was obvious he was gravely ill.
So --- why are some surprised and shocked he has passed?
I'm not Catholic but realise how important this is to the Catholic people. I believe he was the first Pope to recognise Homosexuality was not a crime so good on him for that.
Our news will again be taken over by one news item and everything else pales into significance.

General Discussion / Spring has sprung
« on: April 01, 2025, 02:53:01 PM »
Well for now it has!!
I've been in the garden today, tidying planters and watering as we haven't really had much rain lately.
The one rabbit hutch I have which isn't occupied by hedgehogs has been opened up to let the warm air in and the cover washed down.
We need the pressure washer on the Patio but can't get into the outside tap to switch it back on as it's stacked with items from the shed which we moved out to put my overwintered hedgehog in.
I also had my first hedgehog of the year on my trail camera it was on the lawn eating the Spike biscuits I had left out.
It's a lovely day!!

General Discussion / Fall
« on: March 15, 2025, 10:30:10 AM »
I went a cropper last Monday ( pleased it was the week after the history presentation!!)
Tripped on the Patio ( long story ) fortunately granddaughter ( she's a paramedic) and grandson  came and helped me up there was at least a 2 hour waiting time for an ambulance and at 5.30 I didn't fancy staying outside for hours.
Out of hours Dr called and said I needed a head scan - ( yeh - it's been said before   :)))
So Granddaughter took me in her car and left to go to work as her shift was due to start.
A&E was Packed apparently Mondays are known for it ?????
Checked in at 7pm out at 3.am  :(
Head scan was ok (  seee I told you I'm not crackers    :P )
Anyway, I did a good job and my face, legs, arms are battered and bruised BUT my heads ok  :P :))

Starting to recover now fortunately and should be able to wear my driving glasses ( thought my nose was broken)
We have a memorial service today in the village gardens at 11am for the Tupton Bombing Victims in 1941 so my first drive out as I want to attend the service.
Just going to the service as don't want all the questions about what happened to my face which is a bigger mess than I was born with  :-? ::) :)) :))

The sun has got his hat on his hop hip hooray- except when I'm driving as he's  taken it off and is going down.
Hits me straight into the side of my eye when reversing onto the drive.
Hate it !!

Chesterfield Discussion / Finally made it
« on: February 10, 2025, 04:00:32 PM »
I needed to go into Chesterfield abd decided to go today.
I couldn't have picked a day much worse weather wise.
It was so cold and raining.
Just 3 classic cars parked in the bottom market.
Beautifully kept.
Hopefully when I go again it will be better weather and maybe a few more cars

Chesterfield Discussion / Derbyshire Slang
« on: January 11, 2025, 08:11:42 PM »
Just thinking about our Debrys⁶hire slang. It's surprising how people from villages close by speak differently at times.
Years ago I remember  shot was a shirt.
Shirting was shouting and yes we have the Derbyshire ducks.
Gerrof
Shurrup
Taytas
There's lots more  :))

General Discussion / Thermals on!
« on: January 04, 2025, 09:29:25 AM »
Again we are promised cold conditions and snow.
My Hedgehog told me several days before if became cold as he finally went into hibernation.
Osca, is his name and I suspect he's blind so over wintering him with me until spring when I'll get a vets assessment.
Anyway, he's a clever hedgehog as they all are and can predict when frost ( extra cold) is on its way. Who needs the Me office!  ;D
Anyway, I for one can't cope with cold weather, my asthma kicks in. I hate the heating being on all the time. Gives me headaches and blocks my nose.
:))It also turns me into a moaning old cruser.
Anyway, Stay safe folks. Once I've collected my friend and taken home I'm  parking up and hunkering down.

Interesting - will he just get a slap on hus wrist??

General Discussion / 2025
« on: December 28, 2024, 06:27:30 PM »
Christmas is over I hope you all enjoyed it and evaded the flu virus which is going around !
We have here ( for now)
We haven't done much as usual.
Christmas Eve meal out then hibernated until after Boxing Day.
The same is planned for New Year Eve then at home New Years Day.
I was hoping to nip into town on Monday to have a look at the Old cars which stand on bottom market.
See how that works out!!
It would make a change to go out and not be rushing round.
Maybe I need to make that my New Years resolution 🤔

Happy New Year everyone

General Discussion / Catching up
« on: December 07, 2024, 10:21:19 AM »
We all have them. Manic times when we long for some peace and quiet.
At last I think things have settled now so I can catch up!
We had a death in our family, my aunt in her 90,s passed away the night before we were due to visit her. So train cancelled and cases obviously still packed we nipped off to Liverpool instead of Huntingdon!
Two services one we attended I  Huntingdon and and here for those in thd family who couldn't get to Huntingdon. We had 3 relatives from Australia staying with us.
Busy in other areas of my life as well but ----
at last we have some normality creeping back here!
