Over 150 hypodermic needles found in town in a week
« on: September 08, 2012, 10:48:17 AM »
Police Chiefs Launch War on Crime is the headline on the front of the DT!

My question is "where have the police been over the last months/years while this situation gets worse and worse?" Surely there should be a "War on Crime" permanently in force?

I can't remember seeing police on foot for years now. The streets do not seem to have any patrols any more, yet when there is a call out, miraculously anything up to four or five police vehicles all seem to show up at the same time...

There has been a problem of this nature on Brampton for years - in fact a few years ago you couldn't go to the West Bars roundabout area without being hassled by drunks or beggars.
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

I think we have a couple of community officers in our village - don't see them around much though

Its a shame that Chesterfield is blighted by the druggies and drunkards at seemingly any hour of the day.
Not that they keep themselves to themselves either - they are quite happy to shout and swear in front of locals and tourists alike.
I had one on my bus from stonebroom to alfreton the other morning complete with his bottle of white storm cider - pissed as a fart (about 10am).The bottle was hidden in his coat in a big pocket - he staggered off the bus in Alfreton with bottle in hand.
Two hours later I get back to Alfreton and 2 police officers are with him holding him up and asking if he can come back to stonebroom on the bus. I say yes (only a 10 minute journey) only for him to get on bus and start shouting "f***ing pigs" at the officers who were helping him. The guy is actually normally a pussycat although he looks tough, but in his state, at that time of day, and swearing in front of passengers, i felt like turfing him off, although I didn't.
As a bus driver, I sometimes reserve the right to not allow people to travel. Its in our rules "Conditions of carriage".
Discretion is applied, but if I'm in any doubt whatsoever, I will not pick up passenger/s who are going to give me trouble, or who are trying to stop my bus just to have a laugh.

Why does everything have to be a chuffing war? No doubt we're ready to go on the war on crime, having won the war on drugs and the war on terror?

Its just common decency.
Proper values.
The stuff we were brought up with.
Politeness and common decency cost nothing, I utilise it at home and work and I expect it in return.
If I get it in return (as a bus driver) thats a bonus, but the nicer you are with folks the nicer they are to you.
Drugs or alcohol can distort this somewhat.

At least the police with their ever dwindling finances appear to be proactive in something.

Not so sure about that Scimitar. My point is why have they left it so long, to get so far out of hand that they have to declare war on these folks?

If they had kept an eye on what's been happening down there for the last year or two, they wouldn't have let it get so out of control.

Do they only react when something goes over the top? I remember the guy in West Bars Wines & Spirits complaining about the situation - and his shop shut years ago...  :(

@Scimitar You and I both know the druggies and Alchy's around town. Probably most of the re-offending shop lifters too.

@To the forum. What are the police supposed to do with them ?
Chase them out of town, ban them ?
Won't they just move to another town and get kicked out of there.
What's the point of fineing them etc.

No I don't have the answer as usual  :(

True - they'll shift 'em for a bit but they will be back.
Most of them got free transport passes on buses so can't stop 'em anyway.
At least the police can shift them from areas of public interest from lets say Crooked Spire, but they will only go somewhere else - old court House on west bars is popular now I believe. >:(

I wish all bus drivers were like you, in that case.  While most are fine, we seem to get more than our fair share (on the Inkersall run) of ones who grunt and answer impolitely in monosyllables.   :(

Yep - also that detached brick building adjacent to the top car park next to the Court House, behind that seems to be a hiding place for druggies/alkies too.

I would hate to be 'trapped' on a bus with a drunk, I think they should have to walk it off back home!
Whilst waiting for my daughter outside the supermarket near Mecca (never get the name right for it) I watch an elderly chap stop and pee on a pathway which runs down the side.
Ahh I thought poor old fella I bet his water works need tightening.
next thing he carries on walking and pulls out a big bottle of Cider or summat, swigging as he walked  :o

Target the dealers rather than the users.  Problem is it's usually only those lower down the food chain that take the risks
