The History of the Middle Finger:   (y)

Well, now......here's something I never knew before, and now that I know it, I feel compelled to send it on to my more intelligent friends in the hope that they, too, will feel edified.
Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory over the English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw the renowned English longbow and therefore they would be incapable of fighting in the future. This famous English longbow was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as 'plucking the yew' (or 'pluck yew').
Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and they began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, See, we can still pluck yew! Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say, the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodentalfricative 'F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute! It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows used with the longbow that the symbolic gesture is known as 'giving the bird.'
And yew thought yew knew every plucking thing. Didn't yew!!  C:-) ;D :)) 8)

Techie Or Suggestions / CleanTalk spam guard
« on: February 07, 2019, 05:25:46 PM »
I've recently installed CleanTalk anti spam on the forum.
https://cleantalk.org/
It has a very easy to follow installation guide, what could be easier.
I'm well impressed by it, and at a reasonable price too.
Saves me and the mods a lot of manual work sorting out the legit sign ups from the spam ones.
If by chance you're a member of another forum and they are susceptible spam attacks, mention it to the admin on that forum.
It might help them out too  MD (y)

I've updated the forum security, i've purchased and installed an SSL certificate.
Basically, the forum is now as safe and secure as one that takes credit card payments.
This won't affect any members directly as I don't have your credit card details anyway (yet  >; )   ;D :D :)) :)

This link is to a page that explains what an 'SSL Certificate' is.
https://www.globalsign.com/en/ssl-information-center/what-is-an-ssl-certificate/

It's just so new and existing members can see that Admin do take security issues seriously  MD (y)

Chesterfield Discussion / "Chesterfield Forum" has closed !
« on: May 15, 2018, 06:20:21 PM »
Despite months of talking and ideas between myself and the owner of the "Chesterfield Forum", Sap1ent has decided to close the forum for good due to lack of use.
I was prepared to take on the forum as joint admin. I even offered to host the entire forum on my webhosting, but what will be will be.
It's just a shame it is no longer available. There were many many posts about a miriad of local subjects that are now only accessible if the pages have been stored(cached) by the likes of google etc.

Any further news, I'll update here (y)

General Discussion / Google fined 2bn+. Am I missing something ?

https://techcrunch.com/2017/06/27/google-fined-e2-42bn-for-eu-antitrust-violations-over-shopping-searches/

So you run loads of companies and the worlds biggest search engine.
Why wouldn't you put yourselves above other retailers in shopping searches using your own search engine ?
Someone once told me to get out of the taxi trade if I couldn't compete with the competition in town.

So what am I missing ?
