Title: Boxing publicans Of Chesterfield
Post by: ironsky2 on October 05, 2014, 09:50:01 PM
Many years ago I used to go in the Market pub in Chesterfield regularly and would often see the late Peter Bates in there usually with a cigar on. I know he ran the Red Lion on Vicar Lane for quite a few years before retiring at the Britannia in Brampton and later lived at Shirebrook in a flat. Been told he was a good boxer in his day doses anyone on here know about his boxing career? The other landlord Iv been told about was Billy Green who kept the Phoenix pub (now Spa Lane Vaults) he died in 1975 was there any other landlords in Chesterfield or the surrounding area who were once boxers either amauter or professional?

I knew of Peter Bates when he kept The Red Lion on Vicar Lane.  This would be mid to late 60's when I went in.  My dad had some boxing mates, including Peter.

Did you know The Hollingwood pub used to have a boxing ring with a capacity of 3000!  It was quite well known among promoters back in the day, probably around 1930's.  You might be interested in these scanned images.  The card belonged to my grandad I think.  The proprietor (FW Wallis) was known as Billy Wallis if my memory serves me right.
