my mum was a bit like that Fly - memory problems!

Just like my mum in law, bless her.  She used it well at first, but as her dementia progressed she got more forgetful and it was never round her neck when she needed it.   :(

Techie Or Suggestions / Re: MS Publisher
« on: February 18, 2016, 09:55:44 PM »
Does it need to be MS Publisher or could you get away with a word processor like MS Word? The newer versions of that are pretty good with what you can do and there are various free alternatives such as Open Office, Google Docs, Libre Office i think it is.

Unfortunately it does have to be MS Publisher.  I'm drafting it at home then finishing it off at the organisation I'm helping.  I doubt if anything else would be compatible.  Thanks for the suggestion though.  Someone has now offered to help too.

Can anyone help please?  I've been asked to do a newsletter that will go out three times a year and ideally I need Publisher to do it on.  My desktop doesn't have it so I checked to see if anything is downloadable.  I noticed some free versions but I'm a bit wary so haven't done anything yet.  I'd like to know if anyone has tried these?

General Discussion / Re: Prices!
« on: February 10, 2016, 10:19:51 PM »
Let's face it we live in a country were everything is top wack and 20% VAT has put many out of business. Prices need to fall and VAT needs slashing to promote economic recovery as things are now its only a matter of time before the most basics are out of reach to all and no amount of money will be enough to cover living costs. Globally things have got more expensive too it seems a impossible puzzle to solve or is it?

I'm not sure if there's any answer I can offer, except that talking with friends today who's son and family live in Perth, Western Australia revealed how much greater the cost of living there is, compared to the UK.  Utilities, and especially food.  Stuff we take for granted such as fruit and veg just doesn't get grown much in WA and has to be transported in at great cost.  I shan't moan about Sainsbury's again after that conversation!  Mind you I get most of mine from Aldi  ;D

Check out the prices on this shopping list.........https://www.expatistan.com/cost-of-living/perth-australia

You can convert the currency into £'s and once done, you can see how eye-wateringly expensive stuff is.  For example...(note, I don't smoke) a pack of Marlborough's is £13!!!!  Or a pint of beer in a local pub is £4.72.

General Discussion / Re: Is their any way back for the British pub?
« on: February 06, 2016, 05:55:47 PM »
It seems that a pub can't survive unless it serves decent food. Marstons brewery built the "Little Castle" at Markham Vale - been there and it's very nice. Wetherspoons revived the Sportsmans in Bolsover with the Pillar of Rock which seems to do very well.
In my village (Calow) we only have the White Hart left (Marstons) - very good food & beer & again very busy.
According to CAMRA - fewer pubs are closing currently.
The "real ale" pubs seem to do well - again serving food.
So, just maybe there is hope - but don't hold your breath!

Rumour has it from friends who are near neighbours of  The Rose & Crown on Whittington Moor (opposite The Prozac, sorry Proact is shortly to become a real ale pub and with a new Manager too.   Not heard anything about food though.  I'll try and keep you posted as and when I get an update.  :)

Good for him, let's hope he does  :)

Never understood the logic in been open until late at night. In a city like Sheffield you would encounter  problems for the staff I suppose it was great if you suffered from insomnia through.

Yes, it would pass the night rather than sitting in front of the telly. :)

There's a report in this weeks' Derbyshire Times about the death of a young chap aged 25 who hanged himself in Poolsbrook Park.  I heard about it last week and was absolutely horrified.  You always hope its no one you know, and thankfully it wasn't.

He was apparently unemployed, of no fixed abode.  But he was someone's son, someone's friend.  Someone somewhere will be grieving.

Off topic but the Chesterfield Hotel could well end up been a Crown property . The Derbyshire Times have a article saying a Spanish director has resigned leaving only one shareholder if nothing is done the hotel could be handed over to the State its all getting very interesting in Chesterfield!

It doesn't look very hopeful for the hotel does it?  :(

Sir Terry began his first show on the BBC Light Programme around the time I started work.  It's like he's been around forever!  He'll be sadly missed.   :(

(I probably shouldn't say this but I may well be echoing others thoughts too.....I sincerely hope no dark and nasty crap comes out about him how he's gone!)   :o
