Fracking will be allowed in the Peak District, Government says
« on: February 15, 2015, 06:33:51 PM »
From this week's DT:

"Fracking will be allowed in the Peak District, Government says

Campaigners have expressed concern after it emerged fracking could take place underneath the Peak District National Park.

The Government has announced that the controversial practice will be allowed to happen beneath national parks and areas of outstanding beauty."

What do you think?

Here's an illustration for you:

I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

Sorry why is it misleading (I'm not saying it isn't I'm asking for clarification) incidentally fracking isn't a left/right issue. Labour have said they will allow it as well all be it with more red tape involved.

The government has stated that no fracking sites will be located within the Peak District so there's no risk whatsoever of the landscape in the first photo becoming that in the second.

"Energy companies will not be allowed to base their fracking operations on the ground within the protected zones (e.g. The Peak District) but instead will be able to station their drilling rigs just outside and then drill horizontally underneath them."

The sites will not be peppering the Peak District landscape as the photos misleading imply.

I got the information from the DT post on Twitter and checked it at Google.

Maybe you should ask the DT why they ran with that Headline? From their reporter and their local websites? See link above.

Sloppy headline writing from the DT, probably deliberately to whip up a local frenzy. Their report states (in paragraph three) that sites won't be allowed within protected zones.

TBH I didn't read the whole article, but I agree, it's probably sloppy headline writing from the the DT, deliberately to whip up a local frenzy.

I look for local stories for the forums, sometimes folks like the Derbyshire Times can be misleading. So don't shoot the messenger!

Would you say fracking will have a greater or less impact than coal mining?

I really don't know.

But if they decided to start coal mining in the national park I would be against that as well.

Although if they wanted to put wind farms there I might be more relaxed. They don't make such a mess as fracking and mining.

I don't know either Pete, but coal mining brought prosperity to a lot of areas despite its environmental impact. Are you in favour of fracking outside National Parks?
