Gary Whitmore presents Derbyshire Pits

Entertainment / Tupton History Society next meeting March 3rd 2026
« on: February 15, 2026, 10:26:31 AM »
This presentation is a fitting ending as it's a local lads presentation of his hobby which is exploring Derbyshires Old Mines.
The land where the  building is which we use was once used by the coal board !
Tupton and indeed Derbyshire was a mining County.
So - the last email I had from Gary was to inform me he would be showing a short video and bringing some artifacts from the groups collection.
This sounds fascinating and I'm really looking forward to it.

March 3rd 2026 at 7.00pm  Doors open at 6.30pm  (y)

We are closing down.
Unfortunately due to lack of people coming onboard to help to run this and our ages as we are all retired people we have taken the decision to close.
March this year will be our last presentation night.
Our treasurer is needing to retire from it due to his health and his wife a committee member is also too unwell to come anymore.
So two down.
If I fall ill there's no one to take over my role as Secretary.
However our website will be kept running and if you have never logged into Tupton Local History Society web site its worth a look as there's a lot of information and photographs on the site.
Meanwhile our next and last presentation which I'll be advertising is by a local lad who will tell us about the group he is in which goes down old Derbyshire Mines.
So a fitting ending to a Society that has brought so many good speakers into Tupton as well as some lovely people.

Chesterfield Discussion / Tesco
« on: January 15, 2026, 01:49:40 PM »
Tesco is moving into the M&S shop in the town centre.
My thoughts - they will need a high footfall to keep overheads going!
We only shop every two/three weeks so need a car park close by as it's generally a large shop.
We certainly couldn't manage  a big shop where they are plonking themselves.

Chesterfield Discussion / Cold
« on: January 07, 2026, 11:55:45 AM »
It's been freezing hasn't it! I can't stand it so cold.
My asthma doesn't like it cold but neither does it like it too warm with central heating so I can't win.
We've had daughter and her kitten here since NYE because of the pending snow which hopefully now looks as if it won't come here. Were down for sleet instead fingers crossed.
A better day today thank goodness!!
Happy New Year!

Chesterfield Discussion / Storm
« on: November 15, 2025, 02:11:33 PM »
So hopefully we have survived yesterdays torrential rain without any flooding?
We are high up in our village so don't get a problem. I felt so sorry for those who were desperately trying to keep water out of their homes!

General Discussion / Garden V hot weather
« on: August 26, 2025, 03:11:22 PM »
Mine has been rubbish this year.
I've never had so little in bloom in my pots.
The lawns dying off - mainly due to hubby being obsessed with cutting it!
When I nagged -- errr no sorry  explained to him that it was only the dandelions which were growing not the grass he went round chopping their poor little heads off  :)) :))

Has anyone been following the ladies football matches? I haven't but haven't they done well.
I reckon tomorrow I'll watch the final and hope they win!!
There's a bottle of wine in the fridge, hubbies stocked up with nuts and crisps - Why not!!  :)) :))

Chesterfield Discussion / Keeping cool ideas
« on: July 14, 2025, 06:07:12 PM »
There must be some we can share as this weather is a scorcher isn't it.
The lawns going brownish, even the wild flowers on it are dying off.
My pot plants need continually watering but I'm doing my bit and filling a bucket with our slops to tip over them.
Two fans on in the bedroom at night.
The ceiling fan on all day in the dining room and the Lounge fan goes on as soon as we go to sit down in there -
Think I'm getting too old for this hot weather - even me old feet have puffed up and they don't usually do that!!

General Discussion / Trends
« on: May 27, 2025, 10:56:10 AM »
We have a several trends occurring now in violence.
The one last night is just one instance where a motorist drove into the crowd celebrating Liverpool FC win. >:

We have schools talking about the possibility of screening pupils for weapons  as they enter school grounds. Kids carrying knives when out in the public - yes kids as some of them are just that.
Knives seemed to be used frequently. This reminds me of the Teddy Boy era carrying flick knives - have we any ex Teddy Boys on here I'm wondering?
It's a sad era  :(
