Politics / Re: election results protest vote?
« on: May 11, 2022, 12:25:05 PM »
Quite right, but . . .
At the end of the day it's Labour v Conservatives
and they like it that way.  That's why it won't change.

As far as the recent results go, Lib Dem gains in locals don't necessarily translate into anything in a general election.  They are a party with a local mindset, and can be very effective locally, but nationally they don't have a good reputation and are currently quite obscure.

Booming town or doss hole?  A bit of both.  I think the town as a whole IS booming as far as business is concerned, but the former shopping centre has taken a double hit.  Having expanded southwards across Markham Road in the boom years (crucially with free parking), it has now been hit by internet shopping.  Shrinkage is inevitable, but because both shops and shoppers want to be where the free parking is, it's shrinking from the north (Co-op, Victoria Centre, Knifesmithgate and now Eyres and M&S).

Free parking is key.  Markham Road is the new town centre.  Yet still the council persists with its famed Northern Gateway, with its row of empty units forever proclaiming "coming soon" eateries.  It will soon be a gateway to nowhere.

So Arlene Foster has been forced to resign because she trusted Boris when he said that a border in the Irish Sea would be over his dead body.  Once again this proves that Boris was the man to get Brexit done, because the only way to get it done (without disturbing the fragile equilibrium of Northern Ireland) was by lying about it.

Politics / Re: Smart motorways
« on: March 21, 2021, 04:47:35 PM »
I've been boycotting smart motorways since day one.  It's inconvenient and restrictive (or at least it was while we were still allowed to move about), and it means adding to congestion and pollution in cities instead, but safety has to come first.

The government are able to say that smart motorways are safer because they have removed the hard shoulder at the same time as introducing variable speed limits.  I've experienced variable speed limits in isolation and they are a very good idea.  I'm not surprised that they make motorways safer, and it's a neat way of obfuscating the truth about motorways with no hard shoulder.

A friend of ours had a call the other day saying that someone had taken £1400 from her bank account.
She laughed, said "They'll be lucky!" and put the phone down.

And - unsurprisingly - Ursula von der Leyen is now threatening to block exports of vaccines to countries (meaning the UK no doubt) who have markedly higher rollout of the vaccine.

OK, this smacks of the childish 'I'm going to take my ball in' mentality. If we up sh*t creek, then we'll make sure you (UK) are too.

I don't think the standoff is being helped by the self-congratulatory noises coming out of Downing Street all the time, which will be interpreted in the EU as a thumbing of noses and a chanting of "We've got the vaccine, nah nah-ni nah nah!".

Chesterfield Discussion / Covid jabs in Chesterfield
« on: January 19, 2021, 05:58:48 PM »
So people aged 70-79 are supposed to be getting invitations this week, but only if all the over-80s in their area have been done.

Yesterday we heard from an 89-year-old that none of the over-80s in Harehill Court have had an appointment yet.  Today I got a text message saying "As you are aged 70-79 you are invited to make an appointment . . " which I have done.  I'm going to the Winding Wheel on Sunday.  I'm 74.

Something wrong there.

This is the second time Boris has done this.  Remember the rejected 'circuit break' in October, which resulted in lockdown in November?

"We must follow the science! Except when we don't like what it says.  Then we ignore it, because, after all, we are the Prime Minister.
Until it's far too late, and then, bugger it, we must follow the science!"

Update from yesterday's Times:  some civil servants are taking Boris to court for ignoring the report on PP's behaviour.  The author of the report has already resigned over it.

If it's something you only do once a year then it may be that supermarkets stopped selling it some months ago.  I'm sorely missing my Noilly Prat dry vermouth, which all supermarkets stopped selling at the same time.  Except of course Waitrose, which is too posh for Chesterfield.

Politics / Re: Shamima Begum and ISIS
« on: November 26, 2020, 10:30:29 PM »
When SB was first in the news, there was an interesting article in The Times written by another former Jihadi bride from the same community.  The exact opposite of SB, this young woman was highly intelligent and articulate.  She had quickly understood her mistake and escaped to Ireland.  But she painted a chilling picture of their joint background in East London - an isolated Bengali enclave with absolutely no engagement with Western society and its values, where contact with Westerners was all but forbidden.  It's also known that SB didn't have a happy home life, so her only influences would be her friends and Muslim social media.

On the other hand, reports indicate that she went to a well thought-of culturally mixed school in Bethnal Green which has an excellent reputation for integration.  So it's difficult to know who to believe.  The bottom line is: if she came back, who and what would she come back to?

I don't care what they promise these people will ALWAYS have the ISIS mindset.
I don't think she has much of a mindset at all actually.  She isn't very bright.  She now says that, when previously interviewed, she couldn't express remorse because of what ISIS would do to her if she did.
But I think it was because she just doesn't know which way is up, and never has done.  She is simply open to any influence that happens along.

It seem that the whole of Derbyshire is going into Tier 3 when the current lockdown ends.
So obviously that didn't work. (Surprise, surprise!)

Apparently someone from an American TV network noticed fireworks over London at the weekend and reported that London was celebrating Joe Biden's election victory!

Well it seems Boris has finally caught up with you - lockdown from next Wednesday from what I hear.
It's now official, but it's Thursday (subject to parliamentary approval on Wednesday).
