One would have hoped that special needs speech/language therapists could help - but nothing is free these days.
I do know that speech therapists used to provide lite writers which would speak what was typed in obviously not much use for someone who hasn't that abilty. I think maybe the schoold use a touch screen and I do know there are larger mouses to help with less mobile fingers as I have used them with a child.
Sounds like a short fall for special needs unless there is something out there which poppy hasn't been advised about.

The therapists / advisors I've spoken to are in a similar position to me ie they won't get supplied with one until they know what they can do and they won't know what they can do until they get one! There is a lot of specialist equipment out there, but anything which is designed to be used by disabled people, be it a speech output device or a drinking straw has a disproportionate price tag! I just feel a tablet may be more user friendly and not so socially isolating as lots of the bulky equipment I have used with kids in the past have been. Rant over.

Still not got the device yet, but been playing with the emulator and programming software




Just for the record, a legit copy of the programming software is about £35.
'Time' is the downer. That little app took me about an hour.
All it does is show the name of 1 of the 3 pictures when touched, and make an animal noise.
Trust me you don't want to hear the noise of a goldfish LOL

@ Poppy I rant frequently about the lack of help and support for the disabled - feel free to rant   - it makes me feel better to know there is more than me out there who thinks they have an injustice to them at times. 
What I have often found is that once I get to know them many have develpoed their own way of communication, but it's not always sociable.

I remember one young female cerebral palsy sufferer who used to have a fascination with ties (remember when men used to wear them?), and you would approach her at your peril as she used to grab it and it would gradually tighten around your neck!!

Pretty impressive app Fly. It does seem that people often find novel ways to communicate to people who know them well. Just facial expression can say so much, but it would be great if there was a socially acceptable, cheap and easy method for someone with little speech to communicate their feelings to people who don't know them, perhaps to order their meal in a restaurant or ask directions.
Fly, can you reccomend a cheap tablet? And can you make that fish fart bubbles?

Just read this today, "Christmas shoppers snap up one tablet computer EVERY SECOND with sales already up 1,000% on last year". Also read that folks are buying multiple tablets so members of the family don't have to take it in turns.

I think this is a fantastic thing - I couldn't imagine not having one, although it took a month or two to get used to it. Superb piece of kit.
