Where  has  Chesterfield  gone?,  Most  of  the  south  of  town,  Horns  bridge  area,  south  town  centre / Vicar  lane,  Beetwell  Street,  lower  Saltergate  and  everything  that  the  bypass  needed, all  gone  and  replaced  with  what  can  be  seen  in  any  other  of  todays  towns.  Is  there  enough  made  of  what  remains,  we  have  a  unique  church, is  it  advertised  enough?,  a  varied  industrial  and  railway  history,  forgotten?  The  Shambles, not  as  it  should  be,  one  of  the  largest  open  air  markets,  slowly  fading  away,  a  canal  that  could  be  alive  again,  George  Stephensons  connection  with  the  area, could  more  be  made  of  it?,  etc,  etc.  Good  to  see   that  there  are  members  on  here   that  love  their  town  and  promote  it,  as  we  have  a  lot  to  be  proud  of  but  ........
When  speaking  to  outsiders,  they  say,  Oh!  Chesterfield?  is  that  the  place  with  the  bent  steeple?  Surely  we  could  do  better. We do  need  the  visitors, tourism, business  and  income, don,t  we?

A  few  times  recently, I  have  noticed  some  people  using  their  E cigs  (or  whatever  the   correct  term  is ) on   buses,  usually  curled  up  on  the  back  seat  thinking  no  one  can  see  them.  Can,t  see  the  smoker  but  the  cloud  of  smoke  is  clear  enough.  Anyone  know  what  the  policy  is  regarding  this  new  smoking  trend  in  confined spaces.

Buses  in  question  were,  Red  Arrow,   X17  (old  one)   and  No. 51 

Not  got  leanings  to  any  particular  party, they  all  have  good  and  bad  ideas, so  who  do  you  vote  for?  Can  never  understand   "I  vote  for (whoever)  because  my  dad  did"  or  "  our  family  has  always  voted (whoever),  probably  if  this  way  of  voting  changed  we  could  see  something  different, or  would  we.   All  the  parties  are  the  same,  they  have  to  run  the  country  whether  we  like  them  or  not. What  if  the  lot  of  them  were  cleared  out  and  we  made  a  fresh  start,  what  or  who  would  we  finish  up  with?, probably  still  get  the  rich  public  schoolboys  who  doesn,t  understand  the  down  to  earth  people .........  speech  over,  going  back  to  my  cave.

Talking  with  some  teenagers  recently  and  they  did  not  believe  that  there  were  Tripe  shops  in  town, (some  didn,t  even  know  what  Tripe  was). Think   I  am  right  in  saying  there  were  two  shops,  bottom  side  of  market  hall  and   Saltergate / Holywell  Cross. This  also  brought  to  mind  the  pie  and  pea  stall  that  stood, as I  remember, at  the  side  of  the  market  opposite  the  "pretty  windows", on  Friday  evenings. Also  missing  chippies .....  Shambles,  Bodens,  Holywell  Cross,  St. Marys  Gate (back  of  spire). Know  of  any  more. in  town  centre? (not  the  new  ones  please,  the  chips  don,t  get  wrapped  in  newspaper)

Just  been  discussing  the  original  Chesterfield  canal  basin, has  anyone  heard  whether  the    proposed  development  at  the  old  Trebor  site, is  on  or  not  or  will  it  stay  a  car  park! I  have  seen  the  new  buildings  going  up  on  Lavers  site  but  is  this  part  of  the  same  scheme.   

I  was  brought  up  in  the  centre  of  Chesterfield  and  recall  many  buildings,  now  sadly  long  gone,  but  just  cannot  bring  to  mind  the  pub  on  Lordsmill  Street  ...  The  Crown  Hotel,  apparently   demolished  1968.  I  went  to  the  corn  mill  buildings  which  was  part  of  Chesterfield  college  in  the  early  sixties,  so  I  must  have  past  it  many  times  but  the  memory of  it  evades  me .  would  appreciate  any  info. please..... Also,  I  have  had  recent  debates  about  the  court  house  on   Beetwell  Street,  opposite  the  old  police  station,  backing  on  to  the  bowling  green,  anyone  remember  it?
