Title: Relaunch Of The X17 Sheffield to Matlock Service
Post by: ironsky2 on November 03, 2014, 06:40:46 PM
Had an email tonight from Stagecoach the X17 buses are to be upgraded. Real leather seats and a new welcoming onboard design awaits its passengers as someone who uses the X17 regularly it will be instresting to see if passengers numbers increase or not its got a slight Red Arrow air to it all.

It will interesting to see the new bus driver uniform I hope it looks better than the present one. I can just remember the old issue uniform before it changed in 2002 it looked a lot better than its replacement. The Supertram staff have recently been issued with a new uniform more up-to-date  in design. Perhaps a change is on the way for the rest of the staff uniforms.

Free wifi at least that may deter people from slashing the Hand stitched Italian-designed leather seats

Sounds impressive though

Such false advertising.  Free Wifi?  How can it be free when you have to pay to use the bus to get access to the wifi?

Nothing is truly free.

Quite a dark colour scheme for the buses. I bet the fare will rise to pay for this still think its copycatting Trents 'Red Arrow' there buses have leather seats too.

I use the X17 a lot for Sheffield its well used by people though more use it for Sheffield than Matlock. Wounder why now there decided to do this? The buses have ready got Internet connection and the buses themselfs are comfortable though the back seats can get a hot as the engine is at the back of them.

I've personally never understood the link between Sheffield and matlock, I would of thought a more frequent service between Sheffield and Chesterfield would be better as I can remember what the 727 was like when we got stuck in woodseats, I can't imagine that much time is retrieved on the hills to Matlock afterwards. Accessible coaches would be a more comfortable ride too. The old coaches on the 747/727 were nice to use and travel on.

Trouble is the old coaches (I liked them too), are no longer disability compliant. All Stagecoach buses are. How do Trent Barton go on with their old coaches which come back in to service from time to time for Red Arrow? No wheelchair access, so I guess an apology from the driver, & advise to wait for the next one.

I remember the 727 ,737,747 well one of them ran to Meadowhall can't now remember which one . I used them a lot as I was going out with someone who lived at Park Hill flats the coaches were comfortable and regular. I think the Meadowhall route got axed first though lack of custom then the rest followed then the X17 came in. Not sure why the route got changed to include Matlock perhaps it was to make it more viable ?

Maybe because Matlock has for many years been used by people from far and wide to visit for the day - it's a tourist attraction

Granted Matlock is a tourist attraction but the same could be said of Meadowhall if you want solely retail experience. Like Iv said I use it to get to Sheffield it seems more used for that route than to Matlock. Iv used it a few times to get to Matlock in the past never seemed that full.

That is how I would normally spell it as well Pastitman  :)). Flipping horrible place, mind you I don't like shopping so maybe that's why I wouldn't go.

Just being polite to ironsky - it won't last long though  ;)

ps - only joking ironsky  :-*

That's a shame was thinking of taking you to Meadowhell I mean Meadowhall to enjoy the over prices shops that it offers. :))

The X17 won't go to Meadowhall in the future IMHO. Stagecoach tickets cover the use of Stagecoach Supertram - pointless sending an empty bus there!!

Not necessarily, if the bus ran straight though to Meadowhall people would choose that it's more convenient than changing from a bus to tram. The 737 ran straight from Chesterfield to Meadowhall and at the time of its running the Supertram was already in service.

The 727 never ran on time because of the bit between Sheffield and meadowhall, it wasnt as used as the rest of the route, was constantly congested so they got rid of that bit. They could I suppose do two a day each way that continues to meadowhall to link it but as scimitar says since taking over Yorkshire traction they think it's OK for people to swap buses with their shopping etc. The same with crystal peaks too.

Scimitar have you had a look at the newer national express and mega bus coaches? Their lift comes out of the front door and is fully automated from the drivers seat. They are fantastic, I think we need one rather than having the lift half way down the coach and having to get out, push them on and clamp the chair down. I presume the express coaches just have the bay at the front like service buses.

Stagecoach must think they are on a winner with this.
They had an official launch this afternoon at the Proact with 6 brand new buses parked otside in the gold livery of this service.

Must admit I haven't, but I guess Stagecoach need Double Deckers on the service, so thats why this investment was made. Don't forget we had to gain this from the Stagecoach hierarchy, so I guess we did well.

Just to clarify - six new gold Double Deckers. Five branded "Sheffield to Matlock." One spare therefore. The Double Deckers that were on the X17's previously will be going on the 54's along with the "spare"Gold Bus. The idea being that the spare Gold bus can be utilised if one of the other X17 branded buses breaks down.
Any questions?

The one thing I would change regarding the route with the X17 would be the Woodseats section. That part of the route slows the bus right down I really do think there are too many buses on that road which is not very wide and very busy with other traffic. I understand that Woodseats is a shopping area but in fairness if you wanted to get off there you could use 44 or 43. The X17 is a express service with limited stops so more of a need to be on time why not change the route from going though Woodseat to going through Manor Top which is a shopping area like Woodseats is but it has an advantage people could get off at Manor Top to get on the tram to say like Meadowhall or other parts of Sheffield also at Manor Top there is a mini bus station. The road at Manor Top is also a lot wider the tram runs on its own part so traffic is not trailing behide it has this ever been thought about ?

Review of the x17 Sheffield service by the infamous Ironsky2.  Been to Sheffield today and there for used the new style x17 buses. First impressions of the bus itself it has a upmarket feel to it with bule real leather seating and has carpeting under the windows with a gold patten on it. The bus itself is basically like the old buses used on this route but more de lux surrounding wise. The driver was on time the new bus driver uniform is more presentable than the other one used for other services therefore an improvement. Overall a good service but one irritating feature of this bus is the TV screen fixed onto the wall next to the stairs it wears thin to see one self ten times on TV I understand its for security but it draws your attention to it during your journey most of the time if we must have a TV at least show a decent film on it!

Is there actually 7 buses not 6. I'm sure I've seen all these ?
VN64 AOA
VN64 AOB
VN64 AOC
VN64 AOD
VN64 AOE, with the dint over the driverside front wheel arch.
VN64 AOF
VN64 AOG

Which one was involved in a front ender ?

It seems Bazza (from Boza) is looking more and more like a bus spotter. He knows more than me!!
Seen him sat with his pencil & notebook on Knifesmithgate.......:)
I know we've borrowed one from Northampton to replace one that had a front end crash, so, theoretically we have 5 on X17's & one spare on 54's.
