Who was best Town manager in last 50 years?
« on: April 10, 2012, 07:09:39 PM »
Assisted by the evidence of of Chesterfield's own Statto (Stuart Basson) I have worked out the points per game percentage (based on 3 per win even though it was only 2 at one time.) Just interested if it backs up perceptions of who was a good manager and who wasn't. It doesn't tell the full picture as some were in times of free spending and others in time of financial crisis, also no consideration for 3rd tier or 4th tier results but hopefully will create a bit of discussion.

So according to Slacker's list. Sheridan is 3rd.
Isn't it about time people stopped blaming the manager, and blamed the players.
Or is this the bit I don't get. He gets to selects the crap players he got for the team ?  ;)

Using Stuart's stats (up to end of last season) Sheri was well at the top.

Cox and Law had backing to buy to strengthen the squad, Sheridan has had to rely on cheap, free or loans. Hart was manager in bad financial times and despite getting sacked later went on to mamnage at higher level.

if 3 points for a win had been brought in one season earlier Arthur Cox would have got the team to their highest ever league position. Yes he had money to spend but thats not always the be all and end all you have to spend wisely. He bought possibly 3 of the best players ever to be seen at Saltergate in Birch Bonneyman and Wilson.
He had the best defence ever seen at Saltergate.
I'd go
Cox
Law
Duncan

& Geoff Salmons making up certainly the best midfield we ever had. Also we were in the third tier.
Nicky Law's side played some very attractive football in the 4th but didn't stick around long enough to prove himself higher. Duncan was fairly successful but betted known for strong defences than attacking style.
