All this talk about this Portas woman made me think to ask, if you could that is, which shop(s) would you like to see in Chesterfield which currently aren't in it? To kick off I'd like a Home Bargains. I know they have one in Mansfield and also Alfreton, but by the time you've gone there and come back, any potential savings have been lost in fuel.

Woolworths, Littlewoods, Peacocks, Focus, Homebase, C & A, Tandy ............................ :'(
-
Tinsleys, Swallows,Wimpeys, Turners, Home & Colonial, Groveners (sic), Harry Fish, Army & Navy, Arts & Crafts

Leggards leather store ;)

No particular shop. I'd just like planners to stop allowing out of town developments so that our local 'high streets' i.e the town centre, Chatsworth Road, Sheffield Road etc. have a better chance of making a go of it - so I suppose my answer is: all the shops at Jn28 and Meadowhall that aren't currently here.
-
Ravenside is only 2 or 3 minutes walk from the town centre so I suppose it depends what you define as out of town developments. Something the size of Debenhams wouldn't fit into the centre though it would have made a good centrepiece in the Northern Gateway.
-
Hole in one Slacker - Debenhams is exactly the type of shop that should be in the town centre! Ravenside isn't really out of town but it would interesteing to know the percentage of customers who travel to it by car and those who walk to it; I bet it's in the region of 70%+ by car.
I await further news on the Northern Gateway with great interest; there's enormous potential there.

Slightly off topic - just been into town in the car (as it was pi$$ing it down) - parked up in Soresby Street car park for 1 hour and 3 minutes................................£2.40 it cost me!!!! >:(
How the bl@@dy hell do they expect to attract people whilst charging that amount of money?!! >:(
As an aside to my rant - I was surprised how many 'independent/small' shops were open on a Bank Holiday.
-
And going even more off topic, sorry, I bet the Post Office wasn't one of them.
I went in the other day to post something, and while there decided to buy some pens and a card. What a palavar, postage could be paid for by card but not the rest, but they could give me some cashback on a different card, and take payment from the cash, but then, if I wanted a receipt for the pens I needed to go to a different till to the one used for postage. Haven't they heard that we are in the 21st centuary, haven't they heard of customer service, the sooner they are privatised, the better.
(And that was after I queued for 10 minutes.)

I just did the same but parked in Clarence Road for two hours for free.

I thought the council ones were free today, though we ended up in Vicar lane which is privately run
-
Perhaps the council forgot to put up big signs letting people know. ;D
-
Council car parking charges are going to be much fairer now a Labour council is in charge. I know because a prospective candidate told me during the run up to the elections. Of course that same candidate now elected doesn't seem to know when people are being charged nor does he support his own car parks but hey he's a politician what can you expect?
-
Parking in NE Derbyshire car parks is free I believe. How can they do it and not Chesterfield?
-
Chesterfield's car parks can be free.
The council can take that decision at its next meeting.
Trouble is you just put a £1m hole in the middle of their budget.
Which services would you like them to cut?

Cutting services isn't the only way for a concil to save money. Does the council really need 759 full time posts? Didn't I read in the DT how Bolsover Council and NE Derbyshire Council are sharing their managers?
(With apologies for going waaaay off topic...)
-
You did indeed.
Go ask the average rank and file members of staff at NEDDC or BDC how that one is going!!!!
-
Bit early to ask, it only happened last week didn't it? Seems a good idea to me, reduce costs to maintain services.
Anyway, back on topic, the only thing we haven't been able to buy locally recently has been a round filter for a Dyson cleaner.
-
Daft as this sounds have you tried Dansies?
I was in there a week or so ago buying some envelopes and they seem to have branched out into cleaner supply and servicing.
Wonder if they are trying to catch the business from people looking for Midland Cleaning who used to be on the opposite corner.
-
Hadn't thought of them, don't go Chatsworth Road way often. I think the last one we bought was from Killis on Sheffield Road but it cost a packet, over £11 from memory. O/H decided yesterday to buy a couple off Ebay for less than a tenner the pair.

Free parking has been extended. 4 mornings and late afternoon / evenings free in dougnut, tthing rest free after 8.30 pm but would have to verify that.
-
Pick your time to go shopping.
I, and everyone else in Chesterfield has free parking.
