On the DT website this morning:
DRIVERS were stuck in traffic chaos this morning (May 22) when roadworks got under way in Chesterfield.
Rush hour traffic queued around the Donut roundabout and the train station as water mains improvements started on Holywell Street and St Mary’s Gate.
The work is set to take around five weeks as 800 metres of pipe is replaced by Severn Trent Water.
Temporary traffic restrictions are in place on busy roads.
Holywell Street and St Mary’s Gate is one way allowing only inbound traffic from Markham Road Roundabout.
Outbound traffic from Holywell Street will be diverted via Durrant Road on to A61 Bypass.

Am I reading this right?
If I'm in the car park opposite the Spire and I want to go to Currys, I'm going to have to go into town, round the Donut down Durrant road, past the hotel, onto the Inner relief road, down to the roundabout back up to Markham Road?
Or up Saltergate down to West Bars and come back on myself?
By my reckoning thats a trip of 2 miles or 1.5 miles instead of about 0.5.

Welcome to my world, Jon. >:(
-
You can go up and down St Mary's Gate. You cant get to it from the donut. Unless you go up elder way, left onto knifesmithgate and down Stephensons Place lol
-
so where does South bound stop?
-
that would probably also explain why traffic on sheffield road was queued from the donut roundabout right down to donkey derby roundabout this morning...
-
Yep - you're probably right. Folks I know that were about and about are finding delays everywhere - which makes a refreshing change from the Saltergate misery of the last few months.
Oh, and welcome to the forums loopy! :)

Welcome loopy, I take you were stuck in the traffic then? Very frustrating !! :(

Welcome loopy - with a name like that you'll fit in well here ;D

so where does South bound stop?
At the moment it is stopped at the old post office on Holywell St, Jon. You could still turn south out of Corporation St etc onto St Mary's Gate today, but as the works creep southwards, that'll probably change. 30 mins to do from the angling shop to the bottom of Sheff Road today - the search for the rat run starts tomorrow!

Can't understand why they closed 1 lane inbound outside Eyres today >:
There wasn't any road works on that section !!
Also can't understand why they closed 1 lane inbound from Sheff Rd onto the donut,
Then had 2 lane exit's ???????????
fu>>>>>>>>> stupid !!!!

They did that the other day too - with no warning signs about lanes merging cars in the offside lane were just having to force their way into the nearside. Obviously people in the n/s thought that the o/s traffic were just trying to bully there way through to go up Saltergate! >:(
@Fly agree 100% with your 'on the mark' sentiment! ;)

I think you mis-understood what I meant. I was talking of myself.
I'm a taxi driver and drive around Chesterfield trying to earn a living.
I wasn't implying you should go out and earn a living :o
Sorry if this is what you thought I meant :-[
