ive recently sold an item on Ebay for a family member and was wondering if its possible to bill the buyer for a deposit first and then the remainder on/after collection? I very rarely sell on Ebay so im not sure.
Its a fairly high value item so was hoping to get a £100 deposit. As far as I can see you can only invoice for the full amount.
Can anyone help?

We use ebay quite a bit. You don't have to use paypal, you can ask for a direct money transfer, or if they are collecting it, ask for cash. But then again, you shouldn't send it until you have received full payment, that's how I understand ebay works anyway.
But in answer to your question, see paypal as a bank account. Someone can pay in whatever they want on your behalf, and if they want to pay more in later, that's fine. It is completely independent from ebay, so what goes into paypal doesn't have to be the asking price, and I think you can amend the item in ebay showing that part payment has been made.
But I stress, I would not send anything until full payment has been received.

If the buyer has a paypal account, you can ask him to send you a deposit to your paypal email address.
I've done this with extra postage charges sometimes.

One word of caution - I never leave any money in my PayPal account. I once sold an £8 stick of computer memory on eBay, the guy paid and I then posted the item. We both patted ourselves on the back and gave each other good Feedback.
However, the next time I bought something on eBay and tried to pay for it, I got a message stating that I had a negative PayPal balance and would need to resolve this before I could proceed.
Apparently the scrote sorry chap had made a 'charge back' (?) of the amount he'd paid and kept the item! >:(
I was then contacted by another eBay member who'd sold something to this chap and had the same done to him, it turns out in total we numbered around 6. When I/we contacted him he came up with several implausible excuses and we therefore contacted the Police who promised to investigate.
When I complained to eBay about them allowing the refund they told me that 'it was the right thing to do' bar stewards!! >:(
Anyway, since then I've always withdrawn funds as soon as they are transferred in - leaving a permanent nil balance. I know it won't stop these undesirables but, if it should happen again, I will just close my eBay & PayPal account and leave them with the problem.

Always a possibility. Luckily, I've never had it happen to me.

TBH, I never use Paypal unless there is no other option. I've heard too many horror stories over the years.
