Title: Help needed Sunday
Post by: therealjr on June 11, 2012, 10:51:25 PM
This Sunday (17th) sees the Annual Cancer Research 'Race for Life' in Chesterfield.
They are really short of volunteers to help marshall the event.
If you are a lunatic like me you can turn up to Rose Hill Car park at 6am to help set up.
If you have slightly more sense you can turn up at 8.30 just to marshall the actual run.
Race starts at 10.30.
Usually done for 1 ish.
Anyone who can help just needs to turn up to Rose Hill Car park and sign on at the Blue and White tent.
There's usually a t shirt and a bacon buttie in it plus the grateful thanks of Cancer research.
They are hoping to raise £125k this year but without more volunteers they are going to struggle to run the event.

What do you have to do?

Set up involves putting out all the directional signage and building the finish area etc.
Knock down is the reverse of this.
Marshalling basically just means making sure they all go in the right direction, help anyone who might need assistance, stop the general public getting in the way (though anyone getting in the way of a few thousand women all dressed in pink deserves everything they get) and shout encouragement to the stragglers to keep them going.
Course starts at the town hall, meanders through the town centre and ends up in Queen's Park. You could be anywhere on that route. You may be issued with a radio so that you can let race control know where the front and back of the race is.

Really sorry but I'm fully committed this week-end.  I'd be happy to help in future events.

Do I need to bring proof of ID ?
Matlock full CRB  :))
Town minor CRB  ;)
Passport
Driving licence
etc

If I get a free t-shirt, can I auction it and give the money to the cause ?

On a serious note. What's your connection to the race JR
Volunteer, promoter ?

You need nothing except yourself and looking at the weather forecast warm waterproof clothing (showers forecast)

I'm on 10% of the takings  :))
Seriously I have no connection at all I'm just stupid enough to volunteer to help on these things.
I'm doing the Ashgate Hospice Midnight walk next weekend as well (Emily Evans at the Hospice will be delighted to hear a: from any ladies still wanting to take part and b: anyone daft enough to lose a nights sleep to marshall this one)

I'm taking part in the race with some other ladies from College plus some children and Mollie the dog.

If anyone would be kind enough to sponsor us, we'd be hugely grateful as we're a bit short of our target.

In my dreams. Time and a third these days. Only doing it because I feel an obligation to as otherwise my colleague will be doing every saturday and sunday for most of the summer.

I normally stick mine in NEDDC but not sure if you have to pay these days (Slacker?)
The organisers say you can park at the emergency Doctors where Scarsdale Hospital used to be. Access off Newbold Road then through the back gate and down past the wood yard (why am I giving a Taxi Driver detailed directions???)

Ask your missus if you can borrow one of her pretty umbrellas - may not keep you very dry, but it would give the rest of us a good laugh...

errr that would have been me !!!

Just got in, ended up as tail end charlie escorting three delightful 'young' ladies to the finish.
Just under an hour and a quarter.
'Winner' (use the term loosely as it's not really a race) finished in around 28 minutes.

Congratulations to all 1900 who took part including our very own 'Gerty'.

Could have done with you two years ago. I was marshalling at the junction of Knifesmithgate, Cavendish Street and Stephenson's Place. The number of people who asked me where their bus was going from due to the closure was ridiculous. Do I look like a walking timetable?

Oh, advice for the local council. CBC?
Get some of the Holmebrook Valley Park staff, who always seem to be stood around chatting and supping tea,
down to Queens Park, and shift some of the Goose Sh1t !!

IMHO  ;)

Don't have the money to donate as much as I'd like but I can give my time to help others fundraise.
Besides which it's fun.

See you on Sheepbridge Lane Midnight on Saturday for the Ashgate Hospice walk !!   ;D 8)

We had some chaps in town to try and tell folks about where buses were leaving from during race. Trouble is if you have a high viz jacket on, even if your nowt to do with buses, they will home in on you. A bit like wasps.
It was funny to watch the "sunday driver" going through town with various roads closed, just stopping in normal traffic, with no idea where to go.
My only gripe on the day was roadworks on west bars roundabout - markham road at the end was coned off into one lane only.
Still, it was all done well, i even brought some Pink lasses in to town on the bus. If it was left up to me I would have brought them in for free, but I'm not allowed that option.

When I finally drove out of town down Saltergate, about 9.40am, the back of the town hall was a sea of pink  :)
I was going to stop and take a shot, then thought better of it  8)
Plus there were cars pulling up dropping last minute attendee's off all over the place.

Strangewood - got some 39's tomorrow as well, oh and wednesday. Oh and thursday!!
After thursday got two weeks off.
Actually take lots of money on 39's on dayriders which justifies the buses frequency.
They are nice buses too, TBH, my favourite. Still get the occasionate "White Storm Cider" swigger though. :))
