As suggested by Mycul, we've been there today.
What a strange place, feels like you're walking into a consentration camp :(
Yet these places were set up to help the poor, needy, homeless and orphans.
Worth the visit, enjoyed it TBH ;)
Pictures on my FB account.
I'll try to sort out a Flickr account tomorrow.

Yes but what 'really' went on in their Fly :(

After being there, I don't think there was that much scope for abuse. Women, children and kids all segregated.
Even families lived apart within the building. Despite it's size, the layout is very general. Only walls and doors between areas.
Couldn't help having a scribble on the blackboard LOL

If you were a politician etc . .
In those days I think it might have been people.
Nowadays it's more each other ::)

I used to live in Farnsfield, a small village about 5 miles from Southwell and never knew about the workhouse! :-[
If you ever get the time or inclination, there is some lovely countryside in that area - and much of it running alongside the River Trent. My parents ran a village pub and, after closing on Sunday lunchtimes (remember those days before 24 hour opening?!), we used to take sandwiches and picnic round there. Here are some of our haunts for anyone that's interested:
Hoveringham (NOT the quarry bit!)
Bleasby (used to be a nice pub at the side of the river)
Fiskerton
Kelham
Muskham (North & South)
Kirklington
...............I could go on - and usually do!! ;)

Is there a pub called the White Post in Farnsfield, Alsatian? I have a recollection of being taken there for lunch with my parents many years ago.
I went to Southwell last year and had a look at the Minster and the Saracens Head but drove straight past the Workhouse as I felt it might be rather depressing. I'm steering clear of the Holocaust Center in Ollerton for the same reason. Has anyone been there?

We once called in passing, followed the lane to the top, and the centre was closed :(
Will re-visit, I don't see it as depressing. More the truth.
How can people deny it never happened ?

Oh - who's a posh bird then??!!!! ;) Yes there is, it's on the roundabout as you approach Farnsfield. It was, in those days, quite a posh establishment.

Even in those days (early '60s) the licensed trade was not one that made you rich, whilst running the pub Mum used to work as chambermaid at the Saracens Head (as well as working Saturday nights at the White Post transport cafe) - Dad, on the other hand was caretaker at my junior school and driver for the local coach operator.
Phew!! :o

White post transport cafe
Visited that a few times on my push bike when I was a member of Bolsover Wheelers Cycle Club.
Probably about 1978-9

Just out of interest (?) this is the pub my parents used to keep (The Wheatsheaf Inn), although as you can see it's now a private house.

Fly re your National Trust membership - Mr Straws house is well worth a visit. You do need to book though as they can only accommodate small groups, especially if you are planning to go at the weekend. Well worth the effort though :)

We'd ear marked the last bank holiday Monday to go there :)
It's closed bank holidays LOL ::)
Got the rest of the year yet ;)
Ta for the recomendation all the same :)

Remember going to White Post Farm when kids were little, which was great for the kids, and I remember I had toothache at the time, which was not so good.
Kids had a great time though with the animals - almost seems like yesterday, but it was nearly 20 years ago!!
