O2 have confirmed there are issues across the UK networks.

My phone is with O2 - no problem with calls here or in Sheffield today. FWIW

All over the papers today.
O2 customers suffer nationwide network failure
Thousands of O2 customers have been unable to make calls, send text messages or use data for over 17 hours, after the network suffered a major failure across the country yesterday afternoon.

My take on it is that the more sophisticated your phone (i.e. 2G or 3G), the more likely your phone would be affected.
My Wife and I both have O2,but our phones are quite old,(when kids renew their phones, we usually inherit their cast offs) and we've been ok.
Made me chuckle - there must be a new generation of people that have had to use a phone box for the first time in their lives!! :)) :))

Its one of those things that only has one way in and out for the user,once in your a bit cramped, windows are filthy, and the equipment probably doesn't work properly. Its cold, draughty,and might smell of piss.
I'm getting too many parallels here with my occupation :-[
