Title: Broadband speeds ?
Post by: Fly on July 12, 2012, 06:07:04 PM
Was chatting with Pete the other day about broadband suppliers and speeds.
I've just run a test on here. http://www.speedtest.net/ (http://www.speedtest.net/)
Don't click the 'Start Now' button, wait for the 'Begin Test'
Once the test has run, click the 'Share' button and post the link as an image on here.

I'm with TalkTalk, this isn't a bad result.

I don't trust these sites - mine said 15 for downloads, but most evenings I have a connection so slow, I can't watch a video on YouTube without the dreaded circle of death appearing during buffering. Twas a lot faster 18 months ago.

Your throughput speed may be 15mbps but if the servers cant output at that speed you wont get it at your end.  It obviously depends on how busy the network is etc.  You may get 15mbps at 2am when its quiet.

For a more accurate result use: www.speedtester.bt.com (http://www.speedtester.bt.com) and use FTTC when you get the option.

It does take a few minutes to complete but gives a more accurate and detailed result.

The 2 were pretty much on a par so I assume it's fairly accurate

Hi

Well I am a little disappointed because they said I should get 72mb down and 20mb up, but truth be told I don't think I would notice the difference, and I have only had the Infinity 2 for about 2 weeks, so it may settle down and I will get the speed they say,  before that I had 38mb down and 8mb up.

I play an online game, but I still die just as often as I used to when I had 4mb download speed  :)

May I ask what you pay per month for that sort of speed ?

I pay TalkTalk £21 a month for the essential package. Phone bill is always £0
Just run the speedtest again as we speak.

Hi

It costs £26.00 a month plus bt line rental and call package, the total package is around £48.00 a month which includes unlimited anytime calls I paid 53p calls cost on the last bill, unlimited (usual caviat fair usage policy) internet and line rental.

On the up, not bad for this time of night. 8.05pm by my watch.
Not sure the forum clock is correct.

I'm not a gamer, and the talkTalk package suits my fine.
Still impressive speed, but at that price, I'd want it  ;)

Thought I'd try updating my router software.

This is my speed before any update. This is via cable, not WiFi.

The software didn't update my router.
This is my speed 5mins later, via WiFi.

Guess I'll stay with the WiFi LOL  ;) And no software updates  :-X
