I want to take her to the best restaurant in town - but I'm looking for suggestions. This is not about price or value for money, I want it to be the best in town irrespective of price - any opinions?

Dunno really Pete, although we really enjoyed the Thai one earlier this year.
Now if it were my hubby wanting a nice treat for me - I would enjoy either a one or two night stay in York or a stay at Thoresby Hall.
Must get him to join this site so he can read this thread. ;)
Hope you give her a lovely night where ever you go Pete.
Enjoy :)

Buckinghams on Newbold Road?
-
Thanks folks, I think Buckinghams is one table only with a minimum of six guests, I have known of Nick Buckingham since his days in Baslow and would give that a go if I didn't want it just to be me and my wife that ate there.

Just a couple from the top of Our_Lass's memory from customer's.
Another one's the restaurant at the end of the alley, back of the old Comet, cut's through to the Victoria Centre.
Apparently you have to book. It's very popular. (Tokado ???)

Cheers Fly. I looked at the Calabria menu and wasn't inspired. Only just heard of Aubergine, so looking into that. Have been to the Japanese restaurant O-Tokuda, for a taste of the old seafood Teppan-Yaki. However their website is down and I wondered if it was still in business.
Suggestions still welcome. :)

We have been looking for somewhere good for ages. Best food by a mile has been at the White Swan near the crooked spire. It was a bit busy (but I suppose that in itself is a good recommendation) quite noisy(lots of people) but the food was delicious and didn't take ages to arrive. Hope you have a lovely time wherever you go. :)

Customer of mine told me, RE: White Swan.
Party of 12 on recommendation they'd seen in the DT went there.
She opted for the Gammon. It arrived a little over done, IE, knife wouldn't go through it.
The egg had burst it's yolk, but she was served it anyway.
Apparently the chips are nice :-X

I'd love to, but it's not quite the romantic scenario I had in mind... :P

I have no experience of it myself but I'm told the Abbeydale hotel on Cross Street is as good as Buckinghams at about a 3rd of the price.
It also has the advantage that you can walk!!!
