Brand new. I'm venturing into somewhere I've not been before.
Not totally sure what I've bought ! 8)

I was thinking of buying my hubby one for Christmas Fly, I take it they can be used for going on the internet --- or not??
Let me know what you think of it.
-
>> I take it they can be used for going on the internet
Oh yes, in fact, at the rate that tablets are being sold they will overtake laptops/desk top computers in the not so distant future.
If you aren't interested in computers and all the baggage that goes with them, a tablet is an elegant solution - especially for internet browsing.
-
Pete you may have seen my posts on facebook re my hubby.
I bought him a new mobile last year and he's not that good at techie stuff so has struggled a bit.
I put him on facebook a short while ago and he's slowly getting into it, just thought a tablet would be easier for him to see and use.
-
>> just thought a tablet would be easier for him to see and use.
It would. From a consumer's point of view they are a much simplified version of a laptop - with none of the "geek speak" associated with computers.
-
Could one of you techie guys do a bit of "An idiots guide" please?
Pros and Cons of tablet vs Laptop?
I would also really value your opinions / ideas on the idea of using a tablet as a communication aid for children with special needs and limited/ lack of speech. Thanks Guys :)
-
@Poppy
I'll reply more when I have it and have got used to using it.
Not being delivered till later in the week.
-
Would that be instead of or as well as Makaton Poppy or is it something for the child to play with?

Here's a quick example of a simple program I have just written.
I'm using programming software on my laptop. The screen shot is an emulated Android phone.
The tablet I've ordered has a bigger screen, the layout isn't a problem.
The user simply guesses a number between 1-100.
If they are wrong, the program tells the user if they are too high or low.
Basic simple programming.
Now, add a picture of Spongebob Square Pants onto the background of the screen and you have a child's attention.
I could run off simple little apps like that for an Andriod device all day.
Here's one I programmed for my WindowsMobile Enabled Phone.
-
And before you ask, do I have a copy of DOND for Windows, yes I have, I wrote it :)
My Father Ted Christmas Special version is brill, FEK, DRINK 8)
No you can't have a copy.
The lawyers at Endemol might still be watching me over Copyright issues.
I daren't give copies of it out. I'm legally bound.
Might bring my lappy to the xmas meet, they can't do me for playing it on my own lappy ;D
;D :D :)) :) 8)

Thanks for the input people. Lots of food for thought here.
Hello OC - I'm really thinking of using this with students who aren't able to use Makaton. I wondered about them scrolling throgh pictures as an alternative to eye pointing and/or two switch scanning.
Hi Cc Thanks for the good advice here CC. I may well be getting back to you. I have in mind students who may also use a pre programmed machine to deliver spoken phrases. But sometimes that can be a bit formal and I was looking for something to be used in a more social setting, something that the user and their peers would find "cool", also something that they could use to indicate their choice in something like an activity to do or what meal to choose.
And Fly. Thanks for that but you make it look so easy. I think I may need to get a tablet and have a play. Going to try and get a look at the ones in Tesco. Do you think I could load a series of photos of real things for the student to identify? Say different fruits and then ask them to choose a particular one ie "find the apple" I could start with a choice of two fruits and then add more as they learned the different fruits. (Hope that makes sense)
I suppose I want it to have a dual purpose really, as a way of assessing what they know and as a tool for them to use in social situations.
Am I expecting too much or is that possible?
Sorry for the long ramble, I have a lot to learn! :)
-

I could make a program that does that Poppy, either for Windows or Android.
Windows is easier, I'm already literate in Windows programming.
I've got a little learning curve to negotiate with the Android programming.
Will be a lot easier when I actually have one in my hands.

I'm becoming convinced that this could be really useful in an educational setting. Sorry to hassle you Fly when your tablet hasn't arrived yet. I'm thinking that I need to get one myself so that I can show the powers that be the potential they have, and then convince them to invest in a couple.
-
Could you not buy or obtain some software Poppy, I do know you can get 'touch screens' for pc's instead of the keyboards as I was offered one for one of the children I have looked after.
I have only ever seen the picture screens which the disabled use but presume they are custom made, also have seen the picture books which are used for communication.
Sounds as if you can get some good help on here though - needs to be quite an extensive programme though.

One would have hoped that special needs speech/language therapists could help - but nothing is free these days.
I do know that speech therapists used to provide lite writers which would speak what was typed in obviously not much use for someone who hasn't that abilty. I think maybe the schoold use a touch screen and I do know there are larger mouses to help with less mobile fingers as I have used them with a child.
Sounds like a short fall for special needs unless there is something out there which poppy hasn't been advised about.
-
The therapists / advisors I've spoken to are in a similar position to me ie they won't get supplied with one until they know what they can do and they won't know what they can do until they get one! There is a lot of specialist equipment out there, but anything which is designed to be used by disabled people, be it a speech output device or a drinking straw has a disproportionate price tag! I just feel a tablet may be more user friendly and not so socially isolating as lots of the bulky equipment I have used with kids in the past have been. Rant over. :)
-
Still not got the device yet, but been playing with the emulator and programming software
(http://i1057.photobucket.com/albums/t382/Barry_Fly/screencapture.jpg)
Just for the record, a legit copy of the programming software is about £35.
'Time' is the downer. That little app took me about an hour.
All it does is show the name of 1 of the 3 pictures when touched, and make an animal noise.
Trust me you don't want to hear the noise of a goldfish LOL :))
-
Fly the techie whizz eh Nice one :)
@ Poppy I rant frequently about the lack of help and support for the disabled - feel free to rant - it makes me feel better to know there is more than me out there who thinks they have an injustice to them at times. ;)
What I have often found is that once I get to know them many have develpoed their own way of communication, but it's not always sociable. ;)
-

I remember one young female cerebral palsy sufferer who used to have a fascination with ties (remember when men used to wear them?), and you would approach her at your peril as she used to grab it and it would gradually tighten around your neck!! :D
-
@ Alsatian --- yes that's what I mean. Iv'e had some very embarrassing moments in my time :-[
-
My first post from my tablet. It was delivered this afternoon.
Not tried to post without the keyboard attached yet ;)
-
Let us know how you get on with it Fly. Have bought hubby one for Christmas :-? ::)
-
Mine along side my mobile phone.
Mine in it's keyboard/case.
So far so good. I'm loving it :)
-
Pretty impressive app Fly. It does seem that people often find novel ways to communicate to people who know them well. Just facial expression can say so much, but it would be great if there was a socially acceptable, cheap and easy method for someone with little speech to communicate their feelings to people who don't know them, perhaps to order their meal in a restaurant or ask directions.
Fly, can you reccomend a cheap tablet? And can you make that fish fart bubbles? ;D
-
Have bought hubby one for Christmas :-? ::)
Think only tablet I'm likely to get for xmas is a Paracetomol!
-
I'm working the fish fart :D
-
I didn't realise I could 'pinch' the screen to zoom in or out.
Getting there slowly ;)
-
Just read this today, "Christmas shoppers snap up one tablet computer EVERY SECOND with sales already up 1,000% on last year". Also read that folks are buying multiple tablets so members of the family don't have to take it in turns.
I think this is a fantastic thing - I couldn't imagine not having one, although it took a month or two to get used to it. Superb piece of kit. :)
-
How are you getting on with it Flyboy?
-
I'll try and answer any questions about me and the tablet in one post, this one :)
Not spending a lot of time on the forum cos my heads buried in the tablet LOL
Love the interface and touch screen.
Battery lasts about 2 hours, disappointed.
Can't tether to Wifi Ad-Hoc connections. IE. No internet connection if there's no direct Wifi available.
I've got a program running on my phone. I can connect to the internet from my laptop via my phone. Anywhere :-)
The tablet won't connect. Full stop !!!!!!!!!!
It's a Google or Andriod security issue apparently.
Got a free Office app installed, but can't expand cells of an existing spread sheet on the tablet.
So I can't see all the info :-(
Plus I stood on the USB keyboard lead and broke it, so I only have half a screen to look at.
The rest is took up with the bloody on-screen keyboard.
Other than that, every things fine, thanks for asking LOL ;-)
-
Ditched us for the Tablet eh :'(
:)) Hope my hubbie works ok - cos i can't faff with it like you are with yours :-?
-
Just downloaded 'What About Dick' and copied it to the tablet.
Will be able to watch it at work :)
As long as I take the charger ::)
-
Are you sure about the time between charges on the tablet - seems very short to me.
-
I think that's what you get for buying a cheap model Pete.
Not a problem when I'm at work, will be a bit limited abroad taking advantage of free wifi in the reception area though.
But I'm sure an hour a day will suffice. Still got my trusty phone ;)
Just put a 32GB SD card in it. Loading it with a few albums now :)
Bit of easy listening between jobs LOL
-
Actually I've just been looking at battery life comparrison charts - looks like we both need to save up for the Google Nexus 7 - it runs on full power/brightness/volume for seven and a half hours...
I want one! :))
-
Neither of us can afford one though 8)
-
Yup :(
Unless I raid the kids' savings accounts >;
-
@ Pete That's what I bought my hubby for Christmas, 32gb which thought was quite good
All I have to do is see if I can use it now so I show him how to use it ::)
Got it from Chesterfield Currys/PC World
-
So I can't connect to the internet through my mobile phone.
I can with my TalkTalk wifi at home, or with free wifi in pubs, bars, hotels etc.
Android/Google don't allow ad-hoc wifi connections on their tablets.
Literally thousands of people, over the last 3 years have been asking Google to implement this feature with no joy.

I bought mine from PC World it had a £20.00 money back offer on it --- only I have to wait 30 days (I think) before claiming it, which will be around Jan 2nd.
I am just trying to get my hubby used to using the internet via mobile and now on my PC - he's not doing too badly. Hoping the tablet will be better for him ---- ::)

Spent 2 1/2 hours yesterday with mum's TomTom Sat Nav. She bought the latest maps for it.
Would they hell as install on the unit. She spent a further 2 hours after I'd left, still not working.
Looks like I'll be calling round to hers again tomorrow.
Technology, love/hate it ;D
-
Just reminded me I had better get mine out and charge it up - don't really use it much these days
-
Spent 2 1/2 hours yesterday with mum's TomTom Sat Nav.
I bought a new Bonnie Tyler Sat Nav for Christsmas.
B100dy useless
Keeps telling me to turn around and every now and then it falls apart!!
-
I don't bother with a Sat Nav anymore. I just have CoPilot and Google Maps on my phone - cost bugger all and CoPilot is brilliant.
-
Just been to PC World to have a go on the new iPad Mini - bugger, another few hundred quid to find...
But they are so right - size, weight, clarity etc - brilliant. :)
-
Bonnie Tyler :)) ::)

Spent another hour at mums, sat nav still won't format, won't update the new maps and won't work at all. Bricked !!
Brought it home with me, fired up my trusty el-cheapo lappy, and plugged the sat nav in.
Bob's your uncle, formatted, new maps installed. 100% AOK 8)

I just wouldn't have the patience... :-X

Nowt else to do :D

@Cchris. Think we both got that point ;)
It's a bit of a struggle keeping up with posts right now.
Think were all online at the same time with lots to say ;D
-
>> IPad mini is fine, but a nexus 7 is cheaper
I don't always buy on price - to me how it feels in my hands is more important.
But I'll admit that an Apple device will automatically sync all my machines, laptop and smartphone - would cost me a fortune to change - plus Apple just have more style and better built products. At least they did when Stevie Jobs was around.
We'll see.

Hence I thought that's what Cchris meant.

The top item in the shot below is the wifi 'Router' I've bought.
The bottom one is a mobile internet 'Dongle'. It has a mobile phone sim card in it.
I can connect to the Router via the wifi on my tablet.
Once the Router has the Dongle plugged in, it let's me onto the internet.
The router has a re-chargeable battery in it. This makes the whole lot portable :)
@OC, Not particularly posted for you. But if us geeks don't share info 8)
@All, BTW, the Dongle says Vodafone, but I unlocked it and put another sim card in.
That's another story. Ask if you need more info.

Might need to put my glasses on Thursday night 8)
Getting the soldering iron out.
We have family round on a Wednesday evening.
The USB connector on my tablet has decided to go t*t* up.
Tried to contact the seller on Ebay, he's gone AWOL :))
Live and learn, get what you pay for and all that :D
Am a bovered ;)
