Hi there.
Just had a look at the photograph of the revamped 1980's Woolworths before it went to the new precinct.
Does anyone have a photograph of the original one that stood there?
I remember it well with the big old light globe fittings which could have been converted from the old gas ones.

I don't Neil, but I can remember as a kid seeing both electric and gas lighting side by side there. I think there were chains hanging from the gas lamps - I guess to switch on/off the gas.
Vague memories ;)

Didn't it have wooden floors? Also seem to remember you went down a small flight of steps when you went in.

Hi.
I remember the wooden floors the lights I remember too.
Used to go in there many times especially when I collected stamps, they had millions of the damn things from all over the world. I fondly remember Christmas and going in to get new bulbs for our ailing tree lights......... Regularly. These were always on the bottom floor.

Good find poppy - exactly as I remember it. :)
Used to call in there after the ABC saturday morning kids show. Then walked home to Boythorpe through the old cattle market. One of the few fond memories I have from the 1950s.

But were any of you scared by the ghosts?

Hi.
Heard the story about the young ones burned to death upstairs whilst rehearsing for a play but never actually came across them. :o

Woolworths was built on the site of a former theatre called The Palace, where on December 27th 1911 five little girls died when their eskimo costumes caught fire. They were buried in Spital Cemetery. The local press described it as a holocaust. Some of the Woolies staff reported strange occurences, like weighing nails to be sold and they felt warm instead of cold and footprints appearing on newly laid concrete floors in the basement. :(
