Oh dear ANNON that is sad - that looks an interesting site you found it on
-
And how will this affect the new Northern Gateway project? What will eventually happen to the shop itself, it covers a massive area.
Or will be boarded up oposite the shiny new Gateway development, along with Comet... :(
-
Your right Pete - it is a large shop - bet tesco's will want it!

After Comet, HMV, Jessops, et al it's another major shop gone and more folks on the dole.
-
Oh for the hey days of MR Selfridge which sad old basket that I am I watched last night ;)
Just thought I bought my shoes from there OMG - can't try before I buy on line can I !!! DAMN !!
-
I wonder if the powers that be are reacting to the new Debenhams store that just opened in Chesterfield?
-
I haven't been in there yet but have been told there's not much in? Depends what you are looking for aI suppose
-
What? No more model train set in the window?!
Very sad, the denise of another institution.
As an aside - anyone remember the garage where electrical/toy store is, it was called service motors if I remember rightly.
-
It feels like our town is slowly disintegrating... ;)
-
Along with my old bones ;)
-
Terrible news, but with the opening of BHS some years ago and now Debenhams hardly a suprise. :(
-
That's devastating news. I love the Co-op and will really miss the clothing department and the friendly staff. :(
-
Must admit it was a shock when I put the computer on and saw that announced on the forum :o
-
Hi.
Im not going to get political on this one, but somebody has a lot to answer for.
I remember the 'trunk bundle system' that took your money up in a pod via a tube to the nether floors and sent your change and a receipt back down.
The children's horse ride with a round push button on it like the ones the old buses had.
The model railway with 'real' steam coming from the engines.
Was it Meccano that was motorised and working in the window or Leggo.
Sad Days.
Old Miner.
-
That's sad cos its closing not sad cos I remember it as a child.
The horse took an old threepenny bit the one with all the sides.
Oh and don't forget the divvy.
Old Miner.

When they're selling stuff from mamas & papas that is more expensive than buying it from a mamas and papas store, then its hardly surprising sales have dwindled. They were more expensive than other high street stores for the same products never mind online. Sad for the town, but again they didn't adapt.
Fair comment :)
-
>> Oh and don't forget the divvy.
Wow Old Miner, that takes me back. When we were kids my mam made us learn the number - and I think I can still remember it now - 28052. :-[
Funny how I can remember that but not what I did yesterday. ;)
-
Sad news as it was hoped it would pick up passing trade between Northern Gateway and the main town centre areas.
However it does seem to have been downsizing for some while. They used to have the large electrical area on Wheatbridge Road which went, They used to have a good toy department which reduced considerably when it moved out of the basement where it had been for as long as i can remember (I had a Saturday / Christmas job there in 1973 and it was packed with staff).

My parents was 14722 and my grandparents was 4368 - similarly I have trouble remembering . . . . oh bugger - what was I going to say!
-
We've had it Dogboy - knackers yard for us soon... :))
-
Byeee ::)
-
What do you mean byeee? We're going there to join you :P
-
I remember my grandad's cap size (always bought him one for Christmas) 6.5/8. Hope for me yet - now where did I write down my present door number q?
-
There's a petition to the owners. Not sure what notice they will take but voicing public opinion can't do any harm.

Petitioning a business to keep making a loss??
Management buyout? Please management, put your own money into buying this loss making store...
I know people might have an emotional attachment to the store, but asking somebody to continue losing money just for the sake of it is a bit much.
Asking them to consider advertising campaigns and the like?.? Do they not think that the people in charge of a retail business have considered basics like that?
Totally agree with you CC, exactly same scenario as the closing down of the Crispin mentioned in another thread.
-
Not my petition and i realise the management buyout is a non - starter, I don't see it as any more than making a point that Chesterfield people want their Co-op
-
It's like people banging on about Sherwood Lodge in Bolsover and the new Morrisons.
When I went and took those photo's Monday, I didn't see one other person in there.
There's nothing there. It's not a 'Park' as quoted in a letter from an air head in this weeks DT.
It's a piece of grass at the back of the council offices.
Get a life people. If the Coops going, it's going. Petition all you want.
Talk about flog a dead horse :-X
-
Funny news is they have had their best week for ages...
Go figure. ::)
-
Yes, people are idiots. The shop's got 'SALE' plastered in all the windows.
A couple I took home today were happy cos they got 2 pair of gloves for £19.99 :-?
-
Is that a lot for two pairs of gloves? I paid around £15 a few years back for one pair.
Its no good going to the Co-op for cheap and cheerful. The bit that worries me is what they charge pricewise against the same item in Currys.
-
Our_Lass says for £15 quid they better be thermal and cook dinner 8)
-
Nope - they are just plain black leather with press-studs at the wrist. Turns out, my missus reminds me, it was around 10 years ago from Cole Brothers/John Lewis in Sheff.

Hasn't it already been said. Who runs a company that's not making a profit.
I think it's just Toby getting his face in the DT appearing to try and do something. IMHO ;)

What he said.
-
That's a no go isn't it.
-
My son works for the coop as a manager, and with little things he says to me (me reading between the lines ) i think as a company they are still a strong contender in todays high street market, and seem to be moving forward with the times be it later than some high street stores and i believe they have found a shortfall in the market and have started to fill this gap,but like all big companies they have to get rid non profit making parts of the company to survive.
-
They've been trying to sell for the last 2 years apparently. DT
So it's not a rash decision to close. :(

The majority of foot club chairmen!!!! >;

Today I hear the Republic has gone bust and Next is to close their High Street branch.
How long before tumbleweed rolls down High Street on Saturday afternoons? :(
-
Think you missed a post mate :)

Fair comment. I'll bear that in mind in the future ;)

Shhhhhhhuger --- I have a voucher from Christmas for next ======== off to the shop tomoorrow ==========

The High Street branch of Next has always been poor in terms of its stock even before the Ravenside branch was built. Now that Debenhams is on the same site the only people who are going to go into High Street Next will be the lunchtime office shoppers. Not enough trade to justify it.
-
So another empty shop in town centre.
TKMax opens tomorrow. Another shop that you really need to travel to by car.
Is it me or is this town falling apart before our eyes :'(
-
Has Next shut up in Chessy then
-
To be fair the town centre has been a shifting dynamic and dying in one way or another for years.
The Pavements centre opened in 1981.
That more or less killed off Cavendish Street and Stephenson Place as a shopping area.
The re-location of the library did for Holywell Cross.
Ravenside with Currys and PC world affected Comet and the Saltergate shops.
Vicar Lane has affected the Pavements.
Debenhams might well have been the last nail in the Co-ops coffin
No doubt the donut will have an adverse affect on shops in the Town Centre.
-
Can't see the donut going ahead. May as well put the carboot back on there.
-
I guess that will depend on how badly Asda want it.
If they do open then it will kill off the co-op food hall and do serious damage to the T**** in the Pavements.
Don't think they would do us much damage and I think both Morrisons are in enough of a 'market' to be ok. T**** could be the big loser.
-
I was thinking Waitrose, I don't think Asda are going to fork the money out.
They've got Whitmoor and planning permission for an Asda Home Store on Markham Rd ??
-
I don't think there's enough of a demographic in Chesterfield for Waitrose.
-
Well Sainsbury's aren't the backer. I doubt it's Tesco or Asda, Morrisons ??
Can't wait till we've got one in Boza :-)
-
@JR, why isn't Morrison's included in Sainsbury's price promise
-
Because Morrison's is still in the dark ages and doesn't offer online shopping. In consequence there is no database available for us to compare against.
-
Because Morrison's is still in the dark ages ................
Miaoww! >;

The building is very attractive to the town , not like this new hotel " casa" what looks like a boat .
The people who work in the co-op are wonderful , I had lots of fun working there .
I don't care what the future brings to the co-op department store I only care what will happen to some workers that have been working there for a long time , I don't think the co-op has given them a good solution to their future. It is unfair for them , and I hope they will be ok .
I don't think the co-op has economic worries , if we look at the new distribution centre in alferton , it is a five star.
