Title: New HS2 train line.
Post by: Fly on January 28, 2013, 06:02:19 PM
I've just come across this Gov website.
https://www.gov.uk/hs2-phase-two-initial-preferred-route-plan-and-profile-maps (https://www.gov.uk/hs2-phase-two-initial-preferred-route-plan-and-profile-maps)
It's got maps of the entire route, bridges, viaducts the lot.
After reading a post about it elsewhere, it made me wonder how close to Chesterfield, or rather Boza it will come to.
I sort of thought it would use some of the original rail infrastructure. Nope. All brand new line.
The thought of watching a train shoot by Markham Lane Ends doing 200mph+ is one to think about  :o
The plans also make me realise just how much the Gov has already spent on this.

Time after time the Gov, (not just Tory), come up with these schemes spending tax payers money.
But don't ask the people if they want it, or what they think about it, before having plans drawn up.

The Sheffield station is going to be at Meadowhell and then a shared Nottingham Derby station will be near Long Eaton at Toton (I assume at the former BR depot)
That being the case I can't see it coming anywhere near Chesterfield (in relative terms anyway) It must more or less be following the route of the M1.

@JR, have a gander at the plans. It is sort of, then straight through Markham, down Lowgates Viaduct etc LOL

The M1 widening scheme was bad enough. This is just horrendous.
All I can say is that I hope it brings some local jobs. Snap cabins, lodgings, shops etc.

I predict 10 years of temp traffic lights and queues all round the area.
My argument is, will this really help us financially in this area. I think not.

So if one drives to the Nottingham/Derby station - how long in total would a journey to London take?
Title: Re: New HS2 train line.
Post by: Fly on January 28, 2013, 08:29:12 PM
I can't answer that Pete. It sometimes takes me an hour and a half to get to Nottingham in a morning.
I've been doing it for the last millenium. Ok, 14 years  ;)
Add the extra traffic to the scenario, so unless you live on the train station. Waste of space IMHO  :!

And a waste of money IMO

That money could be better spent elsewhere.  Why do they assume everyone wants to go to London?

Heard a bit of the debate on Jeremy Vine.

Apparently superseding Nimbys are Bananas

Build absolutely nothing anywhere near anywhere

I notice a branch to an "infrastructure maintenance depot" at Staveley - that'll bring jobs, surely?

Surely, as the world operates more on the web with video conferencing etc, this thing will be the UKs biggest white elephant.

A stupid waste of money long term. A better use of a fraction of that money would be a super fast Internet connection for all.

Just want to add one thing. I have the East Midland main line at the bottom of my garden.
I doubt the distance is in excess of 50m
Occasionally we get a longish freight train through that rattles the house a bit, other than that we don't notice the trains.
To be honest we notice more at Christmas or on Industrial action days that they are NOT running.

Just glad I didn't invest money at Markham Lane Ends, next door to NEDCC's recycling plant.
The proposed route is straight over the new built unit.

Must admit, it's very close to the Sitwell Arms  :(
Me and Our_Lass got married there.

I've uploaded some local routes to a webpage.
The page should be scrollable left/right.

Tibshelf to M1 J28
J28 to Poolsbrook
Poolsbrook to Renishaw

Just seen this article on the DT website.
It just shows how a proposal for something 20 years in the future can screw everything up now.
Especially involving the work to the canal around Staveley. Who's going to fund a dead horse.
I'm getting more and more against this HS2 idea as the weeks go by.

Have you seen the route? Straight across the runway at East Midlands Airport!

Not actually seen that one. Have heard rumours Derby wants to be included.
Might be 'under'  East Midlands Airport

That sounds interesting Dave - if that does happen it must mean they have plans for where the current E/M airport is??

There will always be some for and against the HS2.

The Guardian published a poll today - how many people want the HS2 project to be scrapped?

The result, so far, is 75% want to scrap it - 25% want it to proceed.

Do you think Cameron will scrap it - or would that mean a lot of missed profits for his mates in big business?
Title: Re: New HS2 train line.
Post by: Fly on September 09, 2013, 07:55:32 PM
I don't think they will scrap it. Lots of money to be made. Including workers to be fair  :)

Wasn't it rumoured that George Bush Senior was running the company that got the contract to help re-build Bahgdad after his son bombed it.
Makes you wonder at times what's going on in government  ::)

Why not give the workers half a mill each - we'd still save money on the deal - except some of the richest people in the UK would not get any richer...

I'd love to have that much money Pete, I could do what and when I like.
When does that idea start to turn into an obsession cos you want more than you have though.
I think that's called greed. Me and Our_Lass work for a living, just like many other good people.
I can't see where HS2 is going to benefit the likes of me, you, or any other member of this forum.

"Turning a corner", ha ha ha. Get real Osbourne. Just seen the  9 oclock news.
Another Tory ar** wipe.

Labour throws HS2 'mismanaged' rail project into doubt

Ed Balls says HS2 has been totally mismanaged and promises there 'will be no blank cheque for this project or any project'

More common sense from the Labour party.

I'm pleased about this, not because it would have affected me in anyway but because I was starting to think labour were on a spend spend spend promise if they won the next election

Nah, they aren't that daft...

But the press like to spread the right wing exagerations and lies...

Good job I vote UKip ;)

Always thought you were a nutter Pete.  ;D
Have breifly heard Labour are offering free child care to working families but not sure how they intend to fund it.

Had a day and a half here so what should have taken maybe an hour has taken 5hrs.
Will post a photo of the new car when we get it on Wednesday to show you what I mean  ;)

Well, the Cons earmarked £50 billion for the shiny train - maybe that would help... ;)

I agree. When it was initially announced, it was passenger only.
Is it true now they are going to run freight ?
Also heard rumours it may be extended into Scotland ?

The reasons I dont want it.

1: it will run about 2 miles from where I live, thats slightly closer than the M1.  I can hear the M1 so thats going to add to it although its not constant
2: It will take 30 mins off the current journey from Sheffield to London.  I live about 30 mins from Sheffield so I save no time at all.
3: Its a waste of money.  Simple as that.

It seems that this government think that everyone wants to work in London so we all need to be able to get there.  I assume these are the same people who think that you need a passport when you go outside the M25.
