Title: Republic saved?
Post by: Old Cruser on February 28, 2013, 05:20:31 PM
It seems Sports direct are taking over the Republic shop in Chesterfield, whether they intend to open another S/D or keep the Republic clothes shop open is unclear from the news paper report?
Maybe someone else could enlighten us on this

Looks like they will be selling the same as 'Republic' do now.

Which rather begs the question what does Mike Ashley think he can do that the current owners couldn't?

Make the stuff in Shirebrook at a cost cutting price.
You ever been to the Shirebrook factory and seen the European workers been bus'd in ?

I have. Not a dig at you  ;)

I appreciate it wasn't.

Thats my point though, doesn't in cease to be "the same as Republic do now" if he does that?
If you remember that was the point in the original posting when the news of Republic going under came out.
They hadn't got sufficient 'brand status' to be expensive but equally they weren't in the cheap as chips Primark market.
I don't see where Ashley can position them in the market.
But then again I don't own a £1.5bn retail operation!!

As an aside I heard an interesting story the other day (which might be complete and utter BS but comes from a reasonably good source) regarding Mike Ashley and Dave Whelan. Which reminds Fly are you in a position yet to tell us what Mr Whelan was doing in Chesterfield?

If I knew his intentions Jon, I'd tell you.
I took him to Focus, now Debenhams and Maplin.
MFI, Now TKMAX.
Nuffield Health, now, Cannon. Or the other way round.
COMET, now PoundStretcher.

Oh, he also nipped into McD's.
I don't think he was impressed with Chesterfield.
Perhaps because everything he saw wasn't in the town centre ?
