Title: Thatcher Dies
Post by: Pete on April 08, 2013, 01:13:57 PM
Margaret Thatcher has died aged 87.

Will there be dancing on graves? Or will it all be put behind us now?

Sadly the present government are probably worse

I think some will be dancing on  her grave.
It needed burying a long time ago for some.
As for me I think life's too short to hold grudges to that extent. Hate eats away at us.
Sounds like the funeral had already been sorted - I won't be watching it!

Our present government are trying to model themselves on her I think and yes they ARE worse than she was - never thought that possible!

I'd estimate that the present government are still reaping if that is the right word some of her legacy.
If you think about it the 'loadsamoney' greed is good generation that she created are now the ones who are at the top of the same organisations like the banks etc and are the ones raking in huge bonuses whilst still taking the same high risks.
The energy companies raking in huge profits are the ones she privatised.
The unions who should be the ones protecting the workers are the ones she emaciated.
She moved us from being a manufacturing nation to a service nation meaning we are now reliant on others to produce everything we need.
There's no point in rejoicing in the fact she is dead, it won't change any of the above.

RIP

No kisses or sad faces from me.
Respect for her family at this sad time for them though.

Like I said on FB, pity she didn't take the tory party with her.
Cameron's just the latest tory mule, Cleggs is just a Judas to everyone who trusted him !

I won't slag her off - its too late for that - too much water gone under the bridge.
She instigated the preservation & liberation of the Falkland Islanders in their time of need. I think that was her proudest achievement.
Some loved her, some hated her, but she was her own person & has left her legacy in UK politics for what it is.
Milliband got it right on Sky News when a reporter tried to get him to comment on matters political, which he refused to do, because his respect was for someone who had just died, and out of respect for her family. He refused to be intimidated by the reporter.
If you want to see disrespectful comments, the facebook community has an  abundance, which, is not nice, but nevertheless entirely expected.
Tell you what - she helped my Dad give up smoking during the miners strike because he couldn't afford to buy them, and he's still alive today. He might not have been otherwise. Cheers Maggie!

Most politicians when they retire take a title that dies with them. Maggie insisted on having an Hereditary one because she knew dam well that once she and Dennis had gone, Mark would struggle to make his way in the world unless he had something behind him, the sort of title that would make places like America bow down to him.
Reminds me of the old 'Drop the Dead Donkey' joke.
"so now Maggie is a Baroness does that make Mark a Count?"
"well you're Close"!!!!!

Saw this and thought it just about summed up my feelings on recent events.

"This is not a time for celebration. The death of Margaret Thatcher is nothing more than a salient reminder of how Britain got into the mess that we are in today. Of why ordinary working people are no longer able to earn enough from one job to support a family; of why there is a shortage of decent affordable housing; of why domestic growth is driven by credit, not by real incomes; of why tax-payers are forced to top up wages; of why a spiteful government seeks to penalise the poor for having an extra bedroom; of why Rupert Murdoch became so powerful; of why cynicism and greed became the hallmarks of our society."

So we are to pay for her funeral and MP's returning from holiday can claim up to £3,750 in travel expenses!  >:
This woman will surly have enough in her estate to pay for her own lavish funeral with ALL the added costs of security  >:
AND THEN they tell us the MP's can can for the travel money! Didn't they ever hear of INSURANCE like we commoners have to pay  >:
Put on the lavish funeral if they must but why should it be paid for out of taxes with all the cuts we are having - talk about rubbing the peasdants noses in the shit  >:

Just seen an article on a news website by Sir Mark Thatcher. I didn't know he had been knighted - last I heard he was part of a failed coup to overthrow a govenment in Africa - or am I just mis-remembering...  :(

I have been saying exactly the same to hubby Pete, just couldn't remember what he had been involved in and like you had no idea he had been Knighted.

I'm not sure how many others think we shouldn't be paying 'ANYTHING' for this funeral and WHY it is thought we should - she will have a generous estate won't she - really not on! >:

Anyone going to watch the funeral????

He hasn't. As I said Mummy made sure her's was a hereditary title so it gets passed down. Thus he became Sir Mark on the death of Dennis 10 years ago

Just read about Thatcher in a piece by Prescott:

"... I’ve an idea. Get the 13,000 millionaires who’ve just received £100,000 each from this Government to each stump up £770. Privatise her funeral. It would be a fitting tribute."

 :)) :)) :))

There was a Labour Government under Harold Wilson in power so if Attlee didn't get the recognition he deserved whose fault is that?

Bad reasoning Jon. If someone decides to spend £20k on their dad's funeral could I be criticised for not doing the same for my dad when he died?

It's getting that one needs to have loadsa money to have any credibility these days...

Labour didn't spend 10m of tax payers money on Atlee's funeral.
Tory's will for Thatcher's funeral.

Yes, I agree the images could be read in more than 1 way  :!
Title: Re: Thatcher Dies

my point was that if Labour were still in power chances are they would have dumped her on a rubbish heap rather than pay for a state funeral.
But the tories still see her as some sort of goddess and therefore will give her what they perceive as a fitting send off.
If Labour saw fit not to do that for one of their own as I say that is up to them

Tories claim to be the party of REDUCING public spending........................'til it suits them. Could have built a leisure centre for that money

Not much of a turnout by protesters - I suppose it's easy to criticise from a keyboard - entirely another thing to make the effort to go there.
Title: Re: Thatcher Dies

The Thatcher years were the nearest we came to a police state with striking miners having their cars stopped and their movement restricted so the police presence at the funeral was appropriate. With the likelihood of anyone carrying a banner or shouting something getting arrested plus the high cost of getting to London that's probably the reason many didn't go.

Ok so presumably you are claiming that the cost of today was £9m

Now let me qualify this by saying I'm no fan of Maggie's or the Tories but Slacker here's the challenge.
Care to explain exactly HOW today has cost £9m?

I bet the last week was a feeding friendly for the deliverers - bet they planned, not just as contingency, but also a chance to skim a bit off the top.

Cameron probably thought he could get some kudos from it, but I bet he didn't/won't.

Politics...

So you are saying that because someone else has said that the cost is £9m (and conveniently thats the cost of the proposed new sports centre) you are prepared to believe them and re-post it but you haven't got a clue a) if it's true or b) exactly what that cost is made up of?

Do you appreciate how ridiculous that sounds?

Fly quoted the figure (£10M) I just pointed out a better spend. Assume much of the money was security

Security?
That presumably then would be the police and the armed forces?
Who we pay anyway regardless of what they are doing.
So thats a fixed cost.

Anything else?

Overtime and the fact that they are not elsewhere doing their duties, £10M was the figure most media are estimating. We should no more when official figures are released

I'd agree that they could spend their time better (just the same as the policemen and women of Chesterfield can also spend their time more productively than policing oh I don't know something like a march on May 6th  :))  ) but in monetary terms thats not a cost is it?
