Title: Gardens/Birds 2013
Post by: Old Cruser on May 04, 2013, 07:50:50 PM
Has spring sprung do you think.
We have started in the garden - the lawns have had 2/3 cuts though, but I have been weeding and really surprised how hard the soil it and so dry. Can't believe it after all the snow and rain this winter.
Have put in some bedding plants although not finished yet.
Looking as if the two Broom bushes at the top of the garden are going to give a good display - photo's when things start to bloom.
Off to daughters tomorrow to cut her lawn and put a few bedding plants in tubs.
Is this sunshine bringing other out as well.  8)

I bought  a wisteria and three bedding plants today - not much, but a good start. :)

The bamboo I planted last summer has survived the winter and is beginning to spread a little. Gave it some fertiliser last weekend to help it on it's way.

Biggest problem I've got is the rabbit who thinks a wander around the back yard is really an "eat all you can for free" situation.

I'll be eating him if he carries on like that.  >:(

Been out with the trowell digging the dandelions out of the lawn this afternoon.
Yes the lawn looks like Goose Green, but then again it did before  :D

BTW OC, nice thought combining the two threads this year  ;)

I've literally dug the batsards out of one side of our garden.
Our_Lass has nailed the other side with a high strength weed killer.
Let's see who wins  ;)

I have been out and started levelling the flower bed, then it will be time to mow the lawn and buy some flowers/bulbs to plant.. Clematis is budding and growing some more so will take a pic once it starts to flower.. honeysuckle has also survived the winter and is growing some... :)

No time for gardening today. Had to work this morning and went for a walk along Froggat Edge this afternoon. Still managed to cut the hedge when I got home - top is as flat as a billiard table (ish).

I cut the grass for the first time this year yesterday, 3 grass boxes full to the brim.

Pond filter is now off as we have hundreds of tadpoles swimming around thanks to the 9 frogs (at last count) that we have.

Garden tidying needs to be finished, old kitchen is down the local tip, just got some cardboard and rubble to take now and then it can be cleared up properly.

:)) Bugger off you two  :))

Thanks Mr Pete have found what I needed to know.

Basically i have put out fresh Niger seed to try and attract the Gold Finches - not had any luck yet but it's only been out about 3 days and I notice it was around June last year when they came - so fingers crossed.
I was amazed to see photos i had posted of blue tits in May feeding and a Blackbird feeding her young one in the ground feeder.
Not seen any blue tits yet and certainly no fledges.
I wonder if the long winter has pushed the birds back a bit - what do you think????
Or is it because the trees were lopped down a few gardens away???

Yah  :D Got at least 3 frogs in the green house this year  :)

Just been and bought a couple more tomato plants to go alongside the 6-7 we've grown from seed,
and a couple of cucumber plants. Female variety  ;)
Plus a few more plants for the hanging baskets.

I bought a few more plants on Thursday whilst out with my mate - she's as bad as me for her plants.
Not put them out yet - too bloody cold for my fingers out there.
Still only got Starlings, (greedy guts), Robin, a lone sparrow and the Blackbirds.  :(
Oh and the flipping Magpie  >:(

In an effort to save the tadpoles from being carp food this year, we have a temporary "taddy pond". there's gonna be a lot of frogs!

Blimey yes there are. What a lovely thing to do (shhh don't tell Fly he might get em for Margaret  :) )
It brings back memories of the Wingerworth Lido as a youngster we used to take the spawn back and put them in the old pot sink in the wash house  :) It was great to watch them go through the growing cycle - i just love the baby frogs they are so cute.  :)

Have a feeling we might get a good crop of pears(left) and apples(right) this year. Lots of blossom coming on.
The pear tree didn't have any last year.

There's blackbirds nesting in the conifers next door. Every teatime they come onto our garden and start shouting at us for food.
Our_Lass has been chucking meal worms and pellets out. Cheeky sods  ;)

Do you buy the live meal worms Fly?
i love Blackbirds - they can shoo the starlings off if they choose to.
Don't think I will get any of the small birds this year such as the Gold Finches as the large trees were cut down last back end - and that is where they came from  :(

I used to enjoy the veg side of gardening Fly, a great amount of satisfaction in growing your own.
I bought an Acer tree yesterday off the market - Pink Passion, for daughter.
think I've boobed though, didn't give it enough thought as she's having the garden pebbled and one or two ornaments on. If I put the
plant in it wil need to be free of the plastic sheeting so it can get the rain  :( and the weed will come through. The whole point of having it pebbled is to make it easy maintainance for her - get dafter in my old age  :( :( :(

Isn't it so much easier to weed when the soil is wet.
I was dreading weeding the small patch at the front as it's so hard and stoney.
I've been out today and the weeds have glided out, have tidied the pots on the front as well.  :)

We seem to have lost most of the birds and wildlife since they built the new houses on the old football ground...  :(

They might come back once all the building work has finished. People with bird tables etc  :)

Mum had Blue Tits visiting the bird box regular a couple of month ago. Not been seen for weeks now.
I cleaned the bird box out today whilst up the ladders doing another job.
Here's what they left. 3 different sized eggs. Wonder if that's why they left them. Abnormal eggs ?

I have started tidying up the garden ready for the winter setting in.
Cut some bushes back at the top of the garden as they were growing out of hand and didn't flower too well this year.

The rubbish has filled the green bin.

A bit of weeding to do tomorrow and a couple of bushes to re-pot into larger pots.

Need some new hedge cutters - are the sales on yet?

Yep, 10 goldfish, 4 decent sized and 6 tiddlers.  Want Koi but pond isnt big enough, plus the soil here is mainly clay so would take me ages to dig something suitable.

One of my brothers has built his 'up' rather than 'down' if that makes sense, so when i go I can lean on the wall and look down inti it. He had some huge fish in there. have no idea how deep it is.
Fish are relaxing to watch

I like the look of Simon's pond.  That's well impressive!

On a different note, I hope someone can help with a little dilemma here.  I bought a hydrangea last year and put it in a large(ish) pot in the proper ericaceous compost.  It did incredibly well and flowered for months.  I had great hopes for it this year but sadly it's not flowered at all.  It's grown really healthily and the leaves look nice and lush - but why no flowers?

Welcome to the club! My long established hydrangea has had just a single flower on it this year (it's planted directly into the garden), so I imagine it must be something to do with the weather this year.

I have a young Hydrangea bought for me last year and have just potted it into a larger pot.

I took it inside for the winter as I remember we had one in our garden as a child and dad always used to cover it over for the winter - he said they didn't like frost?

Thanks Alsatian and Pam.  Let's hope its a combination of things then, i.e. weather and young plant.

Annoyingly, my friend has had one in her garden for donkey's years and it had more flowers on this year than ever!  I never knew hydrangea's were so contrary  >:(

I agree, I thought about building it up a bit too but i concluded it would make the garden look smaller so didnt bother.  I love the fish we have, we have one thats got the most amazing fins.

Yours looks lovely very ornamental and pretty. I think my bros was more a hobby fad as he also had a poorly tank. He's got a huge garden so had the room. Mind you now he's older he wishes it was a lot smaller.  ;)
