Norton keeps popping this up and Firefox keeps freezing.
Any ideas of solution?

::) Personally I wouldn't touch Norton with the proverbial barge pole - in fact, when I bought the last laptop I told them that I would only buy it on condition that they took Norton off it!!
I use either MSE Essentials (Microsoft), Avast or AVG, all of which are totally free.

I used AVG and Spybot on the old one which eventually crashed beyond saving. I was talked into getting Norton on this replacement a few months ago.
Presume there is some way of altering settings to put the immediate problem right?

Agree with Dogboy - I wouldn't have anything to do with Norton, not even with a gun against my head!

Yes, and I've noticed lately that some software updates (Adobe I think is one) cunningly include things like McAfee and/or Ask toolbar. It's so easy to forget to uncheck the tick boxes - bar stewards!

We had problems a bit back where McAfee used a massive amount of cpu usage.

Have you tried hoovering the air vents, the overheating might be causing CPU probs ?
