Title: NATIONALISE ENERGY AND RAIL COMPANIES, SAY PUBLIC
Post by: Pete on November 04, 2013, 05:42:17 PM
"Labour’s plan to freeze energy prices for 20 months has re-ignited the debate over the role of the government in markets, with Conservatives arguing intervention is a ‘con’ while Labour claim the state should ‘reset’ the market. Shadow transport secretary Mary Creagh has even suggested Labour are open to re-nationalising train services.

However, YouGov research for the Centre for Labour and Social Studies finds voters of all politics united in their support for nationalisation of energy and rail.

68% of the public say the energy companies should be run in the public sector, while only 21% say they should remain in private hands. 66% support nationalising the railway companies while 23% think they should be run privately. The British people also tend strongly to prefer a publicly-run National Health Service (as it is now) and a publicly-run Royal Mail (as it was until this year)."

I doubt the country could afford to do it. Bear in mind that unless they pay full market value billions will be wiped off the value of shares which will mean a lot of private pension funds will suffer.

I understand that Jon, but I posted because I was amazed that a lot of Conservative voters were in favour of nationalisation...

I would have guessed the exact opposite had I been asked.

Have no strong opinion on the railways, but I would support a move to privatise energy. Some things are too important to be bought by firms in other countries - like the French owning our water business, if I remember correctly.

I remember a line from the West Wing when they were discussing the large %age of people who were in favour of legalising marijuana and one of them said the figure was even higher if you limited the survey to Bob Marley and the wailers!!! Fact is that asking that sort of question is exactly the same as asking if we want to be in or out of Europe. The obvious answer is yes but when you examine the facts it becomes less clear.

I don't really understand the pros and cons for privatising the energy companies, but something needs doing about them. Problem is we have just had the Royail Mail Shambles where it was sold off to gain a quick buck. To freeze or not? All I can say is that if things were altered there wouldn't be the need to keep changing companies so much and neither would we need companies to advise us on what is the best option for us!

Just caught the tail end of Sky news and it seems there is to be a bit of movement from the Energy companies with price freezing etc due to the Gov latest actions?

Labour say it's a smoke screen by the Gov?

Well it seems any of us who have a fixed price for energy supplies will miss out of any savings as EDF and E-ON decide not to give it.
They sure have been quick to pass on the increase in the past though
