Title: Hidden rivers
Post by: simondjuk on November 11, 2013, 10:02:07 PM
This is something that interests me.  Are there any hidden rivers in the centre of Chesterfield that go underground and then pop up every now and again?

For some reason, this really intrigues me.  Theres one in Sheffield ive been looking at called Porters Brook, luckily a lot of people know where it goes and the route it takes even underground.

I know there are rivers but im bothered about the ones that disappear and then seem to pop up again randomly.

Lots of small streams do that, don't know of any large ones. Have you got examples?

Don't know about Chesterfield area but we had one near us in our village it went from our side under the road across to other side and reappeared - now it's gone???
I have often wondered if it fed into the river Rother which runs at the bottom of the village near the football ground.
But no idea how they got rid of it.

The Hipper is probably the nearest we've got given that it disappears at Walton road' goes under Morrisons car park ( there's a couple of access grates) re-appears again near GK ford then goes again till Goyt side when it goes under boythorpe road and joins the rother. There was a plan when the houses were built on the robinsons site to open it up and make a feature of it.

Was that the plan where they took everything up to Morrisons, but they also proposed another supermarket? A couple of years ago?

The only one I know of currently is in Sheffield. When I'm on my computer ill post some pics and details. Although its just a river and tunnels, some pics are amazing.

Sheffield station as a river running the full length underneath it via two tunnels have been down and worked in it many years ago there is access from the platform area.

Here's a short one in Chesterfield. Holme Brook runs under Ashgate Rd in front of Loggins. Top left to bottom right of pic, not sure which way it runs. Used to play in the Brook when we were kids, my aunty lived at the other end of the row of houses bottom right on Ashgate Rd.

I think its the Sheaf It is in the open at the bottom of Granville road near the new Mcdonalds but has metal grills across or used to have then, I can remember a Royal visit one day so could maybe date it by that, I remember it was Prince Charles I was a lot younger then must be 30 plus years ago.

As you look at the picture it runs from left (Brockwell) to right (towards town) - and steady on Barry, a bit further up and left and you'd have got me in shot!!!   :P

Cheers Alsatian, was years ago since I last actually saw the Brook. My Aunty flitted.
Recently, well, since I've been working in town, (16 years), someone sold the land at the side of the house and squeezed a bungalow on it.

Read the two posts since I last posted. Here you go anyway  ;)

Sheaf, as Handy mentioned, Porter as Simon mentioned, all end up in the main sewer/storm drain called Megastorm.

Fly: the one at loggins comes from holmebrook down the back if the houss on Ashgate road goes under the road through the monkey park and then down the back of the houses on Chester street. Crosses chatsworth road just below the masons arm goes behind matalan and under boythorpe road which is where the hipper joins it. Not much of if is underground

Think I saw reference to this somewhere else ?

That's an old tradition - anyone working for Robinsons was given a pet monkey - and they took them to the park for exercising.

I bet Poppy didn't know that...

So the Park on Chester St which backed onto my Aunts house would have been another Monkey Park  ;)

I remember some phrase relating to the northern end of town as unstone dunston monkey park and brushes but heaven only knows where it comes from. All I know is that when gran lived on Hope St I spent a lot of time in the park or often more accurately the stream and everyone called it the monkey park. Maybe coz a lot of us little monkeys played in it?

Probably because poppy is a lot younger than you  ::)

Strange but we had a Monkey Hallow in our village - it had a tree with a swing rope on

I know the answer to to this, I halped to plan and build this.  Porter Brook meets the Sheah under Granville Square then runs along Sheaf Street to what was Dyson House and then under the station  to the Don at Blonk Street. If you visit Sheffield Station you will see a huge log that was pulled out of the grids and a plaque was put on it.  For the life of me I can;t remember the date, got to be 1977 to 1982.
