Title: Sheffield
Post by: Old Cruser on November 25, 2013, 08:46:30 PM
Don't go very often these days as meadowhall has killed it off, but we went on Sunday and stayed overnight returning tonight.
We needed to used the bus Sunday night and got a lovely view of the Christmas lights, very pretty and made me feel very Christmasy.
Also had a walk around the shops today and they have made an effort for Christmas in the street with a Santa's Grotto and log style cabins for stalls all lit up with Christmas lights.

Now come my question???
The co-op! it's now closed down  :( but---

High up on the side of one wall there is a figure of a man, it looked as if he could have been in uniform but he had long 'poles' ??? in one hand.
Anyone know who this is please and what it is for???
Sorry I can't for the life of me remember the street name  :-[

Sheffield could be really nice if they tidied it up a bit more, Fargate is ok, Peace Gardens and close area are nice and now with the new Market open at the bottom of the Moor its getting better.

However the old Castle Market area is frankly a shit tip, be glad when thats gone.

 Thanks Simon -    Vulcan ?

We had a walk down the the Castle Market didn't know it had closed, what happened to Social Services they were above the market? I used to do a bit of work there a few years ago.

Must agree it is a bit of a tip at that end, wish I had known about the other market being opened, I would have had a walk round it.

Yes I have it on good authority that its Vulcan, who was Thors blacksmith - explains a lot really.

The offices that were in there moved to Howden House and when it finally closed the rest moved to Moorfoot.

The old one closed on Saturday and the new one opened Monday, apparently with 25000 people visiting on the first day, this was more than the old one ever had within 1 day.

The new one is actually pretty decent inside, ill most certainly be shopping for fresh fruit, veg and meat in there but im planning on leaving it a couple of weeks until it died down.

If anyone of you are on Facebook, there is a group set up by a friend of mine about the markets, with some old pics: https://www.facebook.com/groups/castlemarket/ (https://www.facebook.com/groups/castlemarket/)

It's ok up our end of town. Till they build the new proposed massive estate opposite Boza hospital.
I'm not against it, just a bit dubious. Bit like the Avenue Plant build on Derby Rd. Can the road network take it ??

Funnily enough we went to Sheffield yesterday and, yes, the old Castle market area is rather run down but it was goodto see the Moor area being rejuvenated.

@OC, we did walk round the new market - it was heaving! Although I imagine it will quiten down a bit once it's been opened a while - anyway it's a big improvement and its' design reminds me of Crystal Peaks market.

As a kid going to Sheffield with my Mum & Grandma this statue used to scare me to bits!
Hated going there as a kid. Funnily enough, I still do :(
