I don't know what sort of retail it's going to be, but surely the former Co-op building on Elder Way is in better shape than the old former cinema?
I know the builders are in there, on Cavendish St, and the adjacent former Blue Bell gutting the interiors of both.
Good news I suppose, however the former Co-op concerns me - such a huge good looking building with a possible future massive potential once the Donut development eventually gets underway.

And that is not going to be easy to get rid of - they must be spending millions - and I can't think why - surely the former Co-op building on Elder Way was in a better condition?

Couple of rumours I've heard Scimitar. I know someone might back one of them.
The coop building is in a real bad state of repair.
The coop closing has put a dampener on new donut development. No major retail backer due to the coop closing. Not a good side of town.

Actually, it may be the opposite of that. They closed the departments downstairs in the Co-op because it used to flood on a regular basis. They say that the shop was built on top of some old wells. Goodness knows what condition the foundations are like if that is the case.

My daughter works in the food hall. That building is I suppose relatively "new" - but its falling in to disrepair, as was the major building on the other side of the road.
If the foundations are that bad,surely it must be a major problem as an abandoned, unoccupied,unwanted building.
So what do we do with it?
Its an attractive building - compared to the mock tudor sh1te the Victoria has to offer inside & out.
If its being advertised as a business option why is it not wanted - or flatten it & put an additional bus station on there like it was before on the opposite side, more integrated unlike the shambles we have all over the town centre.

Sorry , I knew that already. Apparently the local Marine company Cathelco has owned the building for many years. I'm not sure if they are behind the restoration, or whether its a joint spend with Boyes.
It still begs the questions of what do we do with the old Co-op buildings - and indeed the Post Office when it moves to W.H. Smiths?
Does anyone know for sure if the former Co-op is listed in a way that it can't be redeveloped, or demolished, especially as its abandoned now and just going to fall into greater disrepair.
Surely it just can't sit there empty, gradually deteriorating, & becoming a risk to passers by simply because no-one will take on the responsibility of developing it.
I personally think it should be demolished to make way for a central Bus station, but as a bus driver, I would, wouldn't I?
Most of Derbyshire's towns I visit have some sort of integrated Bus station. Not Chesterfield - they are all over the place - Beetwell st, Cavendish St, Stephenson's Place. Try explaining to a person not familiar to Chesterfield (as I had to yesterday) where to catch a Bus to Derby from Stephensons Place. Its easy for me to explain, but not for someone not native to this town to comprehend.

Bang on Scimitar, there should be a central bus station. When I was a kid, all the buses left town from the Vicar lane bus depot. All the distance bus/coaches went from the East Mids bus depot.
Where's the bus stops now, all over the bloody town !

When the coach station was first mooted there was supposed to be an integrated bus station as well. Problem was stagecoach didn't want their buses having to fight their way across the town centre.

Actually scimitar I reckon if it were able to be repaired (cost wise) the co-op would make a great indoor market/retail shopping area. Had it been viable WH Smiths could have used some of the space and implimented a post office section in there.
Surely it would have attracted more smaller businesses to come into town to trade.

I think it is owned by Midlands Co-operative Society.

They've merged with Anglia Co-op, and are now Central England Co-op apparently.
