Does anyone know anything about a rather large model railway set up that existed in Chesterfield? don't know much about it (which is why I'm asking!)Existed early 1900s, a passion of a local business man, maybe some of it left at Chesterfield museum, any ideas anyone please?

Isn't that something to do with St Peter and  St Paul School. Top of Hady Hill on the left.

Yes, correct, but I can't think of anything else.

A tiny bit of it is or was on display in the museum, by the stairs to the art gallery. There is enough of it in storage to be able to restore much of the layout, but the rolling stock etc has suffered. Unfortunately, people know the value of the thing and quite a bit of it was stolen in the years before the museum existed, or had the means to securely store it. I am told that people - collectors - borrowed locos etc on the pretext of fixing them, and never brought them back.

I believe it is regarded as significant because manufacturers - might have been Hornby himself - "took inspiration" from the engineering.

Thanks guys. I will ask at the museum and see if it's possible to take some photos.

There was a large one at Red House on Sheffield Road in the 60's. School trips attended often.

Hi Nugget. The railway at Red House is the one I am looking for info on. Do you have any photo's or memories of it? We are hoping to feature it as part of St Helen's History Group local exhibition later in the year.

I was only a kid back then. It was a private set up in the attic. I remember it had a canal/dock that had a moving boat on an underwater rail. Unfortunately I have no photos but someone, somewhere must have some suitable info.
Good luck.

Thanks to all for the great welcome. I was born in 1952 and left Chesterfield in 1990.
Happy new year to all.
