Title: Floods
Post by: Old Cruser on February 06, 2014, 07:25:51 PM
I can't help feeling sorry for the people in the south.
It has seemingly been getting steadily worse over the weeks.

The Enviroment people have been blamed for not dredging the rivers.
They have blamed the government cuts.

Not sure what positive action the government have taken apart from maybe send in the forces, they seem to have moved very slowly on this.

Meanwhile Prince Charles visited and donated fifty thousand from his trust - embarrassing for the government  :-[

The seas I have watched on TV I have only ever seen out in the ocean with no land in sight.

Is this the seas claiming more of our land, or is something more going on under the sea in our earths crust?

I admit, I really do feel for the people.

However some choose to live where flood plains are.

I dont think its anything to do with 'Global Warming', its just a pattern of low pressures as the jet stream is so low.  If you watch a weather pattern sequence, its rotating anticlockwise so its the same one over and over, just on another pass of the UK.

Also, what chance have the residents got of ever being able to move away from the area (should they wish to) as I would imagine that there houses will be virtually 'un-sellable'?

As you say OC, I too feel very sorry for those people.

The footage of the raiway line in Dawlish is quite frightening and the gap which has collapsed is so near to houses, but they say the line was built on sand?
I'm surprised it's lasted as long as it has if that is the case.

It has been suggested that sending in the Marines instead of maybe the Royal Engineers or Pioneer corpse could maybe be as their may be a need for martial law?
What do you think folks? Seems a bit drastic but never come across it myself

40 Commando are based at Norton Manor Camp near Taunton, just a few miles away from the flooded area. That's why they're helping on the Somerset Levels, because they're local and able to do what's required i.e. fill sandbags.

So whilst the enviromental office and government slug it out who is to blame the civvies and forces are working round the clock to evacuate properties and safe guard them.
Meanwhile we now have a yellow duckmarine brought in (just hope they don't sink that one!
This just goes on and on, quite frightening
Is it the gov fault for not giving enough money
Or the Environments Mr Smith for not divulging how much work really needed doing

Maybe folks will take global warming (or whatever the current terminology is) on when they see the results coming to fruition.

Some, if not all, of the global mega-corporations are quite happy to kill the planet as long as they increase their profits...

Would wish for this to turn political or a north south divide but according to BBC Look North weatherman Paul Hudson the number of properties affected by this flooding is 'tiny' compared to other incidents.
( can't post the link off my phone type Paul Hudson blog into google)

So he's minimalising the situation and along with it the stress and heartache of the people involved.
People who need to evacuate their homes but dare not as they have been warned of 'looting'
Little comfort to the people involved is it
Wouldn't like to be in his shoes if he visited any of the affected areas and told them that

I don't think he was belittling the situation for those actually involved, just more pointing out that the media furore had been dis-proportionate compared to other incidents of flooding in other parts of the country

Sounds like you are right Pete.
Having listened to the news that is what is being said - Global Warming -  worldwide concequences are the result!!

“David Cameron to hold Downing Street press conference.

It is understood that Cameron has not been impressed by the performance of some of his ministers.”

For once I agree with Cameron (shhh don’t tell anyone)  :)

I tweeted Cameron this morning to tell him to get his finger out.  This was on behalf of a chum who lives near Wraybridge, and also after seeing that poor Flood Warden being interviewed on BBC news.  She broke down in tears with exhaustion.

Done Simon, charity begins at home is the saying isn't it!

Gerty I watched that interview as well, poor lady was obviously exhausted. I hope your friend is able to stay in her home.
Listening to the news this morning the same thing is happening in Staines - residents asking for sandbags - non forthcoming as yet.

Wow! Great minds think alike!!! Just walked back from town and was saying to SWMBO that we should spend the money we send abroad to help, not only people who have been flooded, but to fund the work to prevent it again in the future. I used the same 'charity begins at home' expression too!

I didnt quite catch all of it this morning but they did say that 100,000 people signed that in one day.

Im still split on this.  One one hand, a lot of this flood damage could have been avoided if they didnt live on a flood-plain, but on the other its getting ridiculous with the continuous bad weather.  Dont get me wrong, I do feel for a lot of these people but some choose to live next to rivers then moan about getting flooded and apparently they reckon theres going to be flooding until May.

I did hear also that £14 of each home insurance policy within the UK goes to compensation and pay outs for flood victims, but these people cant get insurance

Makes me glad I live on a hill

I hear they have pulled the environment staff out of one place as they were being abused.
Don't agree with that - it's not their fault

That's unfair, like you say its not their fault. They are just employees at the end of the day.

Ive just heard they are planning on deliberately flooding some homes to save others in Chertsey. If that happens, the homeowners of the saved homes should pay compensation to the victims.

Unsure about this but be warned if you use this road

The road past Coalite at Boza is coned off.  Can only assume that the Doe Lea has overflowed.

It's not the residents in the saved home who made the decision to flood others so why should they pay?

It'll be the multi-agency civil emergency partnership who will have decided that: emergency services, council, Environment Agency etc. They're the ones from whom compensation should be claimed.

Some councils are charging for sandbags - Cameron has ordered them to give them free wonder if he is increasing monies to them for the sandbags

Many, if not all councils have been charging for sandbags for years. Supplying them is not a statutory service.
